I’ve had this happen five too many times. I’m in a map, sitting on over 100%, sometimes at 200% and BAM “this map is closing, would you like to volunteer” or the latest one today, IT JUST CLOSES. Bam. Full of players, no notice, just CLOSED. Ported to a new one, 0% progression. No rewards for the meta. The worst part? This is a common occurrence! This happens all the time!

This, quite frankly, is bull kitty. It needs to stop. We shouldn’t lose all our rewards just because the map is closing or because we decide to volunteer. It absolutely does not incentivize players to play on the new maps. At all.

Now, “just don’t play on the new maps till it’s fixed” you might say. Well, fair point but I’m working on a legendary which costs literally thousands of the map currencies. Which is a whole different topic.

Simply put, you should retain progression for that map UNLESS you move to a different zone and even then, there should be a 5 minute window. It needs to be tracked on your character, not on the map.

Don’t even get me started on what happens if you DC or run into a client/server crash.

Bull kitty indeed. You shouldn’t lose participation when volunteering, or when the map closes.

I think actually, you should get bonus participation for volunteering.

Unfortunately, this is just another example of how little Anet thought before releasing HoT, and how little they care after releasing it.

Just an update, this literally happened to me AGAIN. No warning, no prompt no nothing.

Just moved maps. Loading screen then BAM. 0% progression.

99% sure this is a bug now.

I’ve not seem a map just close but got fed up with the warning message offering the bribe to get off.

For example, I walked into Frostgorge, was there about a minute and the ‘map closing’ warning appeared. I didn’t bother checking but I assumed Claw had just ended and the zerg had departed so I clicked ‘Yes’ and got a new map .. less than 5 mins later this new map warning appeared .. got to the third mapy and TEN MINS into that IT started to closee.

kitten Anet, your megaserver is broken. I ’m getting this warning pretty much every hour at least that I play, simply questing and exploring in zones, nothing to do with chasing world events.

Fair, but there should be a warning and you also shouldn’t have all your progression reset.

This happened to me. I got a prompt, after my map closed the first time. I figured “sure why not, more people can’t hurt”. Problem? The map was dead. I had to LFG to find a decent one

I’m not sure if it’s related but this happens a lot in the guild hall too. The majority of us waiting in the same overflow to do guild missions then map closing warning flashes. We all go to the next overflow and 5 minutes later it says the map is closing, again. This shouldn’t be the case if the majority of the players are in the same overflow.

Also maps closing and sending you to another overflow without a warning is unacceptable. This happened to me once in Dragon’s stand, right before the Mouth. The new overflow had no active events so everybody wasted their time trying to get to the Mouth.

EDIT: Spelling.

The complaints on forums of virtually every MMO after a major update pretty much look like this forum. Maybe there’s a reason for that.

Saying Anet doesn’t care because a bug hasn’t been fixed yet (when other issues have been dealt with) is just not on.

I tend to not leave a HoT map anyway but for a core map I never do. I like a map that feels pre-megaserver. Nothing wrong with people around but for an adventurous time (for me) it’s better with a small population.

As for the issue, I’ve never seen it but people are reporting all sorts of odd things. I had one of the new maps go to low status but the eight or so of us stuck to the event we were doing and by the end of it the status had changed again and there was a stack of map chat organising things. That was nice but I can’t say I’d like to experience the other way.

It would be nice if we had the option to go to our ‘home server’ map, and just stay there regardless of how populated or not it was. That would at least stop the incessant map closing and volunteering that pops up, or suddenly leaves you alone in a group meta event where one minute ago there were many other player characters about. There would still be a ‘mega server’ option, just bring back more stable maps too so if we don’t want to keep getting kicked about all the time we have the option not to.

I don’t think the mega server is the wonderful thing everyone thought it would be. It seems to cause more problems it solves.

The megaserver system has loads of issues after HoT release. The worst part is with guild missions, getting the prompt “your guild started this mission on another instance”, porting there, but no event running at all. Or getting a team ready for raids in the guild hall, porting to VB and suddenly we are on 5 different maps (I still don’t know who thought putting the raid portal inside a regular zone was a good idea)

Megaservers need some tweaking

So people shouldn’t complain, then? I run my own business, and I LOVE it when people complain. It motivates me to do a better job and to provide a better service. But when one looks at the myriad of issues/bugs that have been present in this game for months (or even years now), with not even a simple acknowledgement on ANet’s part, it’s very easy to believe they just don’t care. The OP’s concern is a very real one.

And yet they’re perfectly able to hotfix a lolexploit which helps players, they’re just not so interested in doing something quickly to something that hurts players perhaps?

That’s certainly par for the course in MMOs it seems.

participation is definitely tied to the IP of the map you’re on. I was in a party with my husband, I had 200% map participation, did one of the instanced adventures and when I was done it threw me to a new map because the one I was on was “full”. My participation was gone. I finally got back to the same map I was one and boom 200% participation was back.

Not sure if each zone has a set range of possible IPs or if all possible zones share IPs. If each zone had an IP range perhaps they could change participation so that the range of possible IPs for that particular zone kept your progress so that when you volunteered or joined a friend in a different instance, you didn’t lose all of your progress.

It’ll probably be more complicated than it looks on the surface. To most of us VB is VB, but to the servers each IP is unique despite you staying in the same zone, which is why we’re losing progress on instance change. Hopefully, this is something they can work on so that we’re not punished for changing instances by volunteering or joining friends in another version of the map.

What’s an additional frustration about the affair is that oftentimes maps seem quite active and suddenly it prompts the message, I’m scooting along getting all the pylons active in Auric Basin and then that message pops up, I don’t want to lose my credit so I close it out and suddenly I’m the only left of a group of ~10 people or so. So I just stop doing the map because I’m kittened.

They should complain about stuff that makes sense. The post you’ve quoted that he’s referring to did not. Anet doesn’t care because bugs? That’s utterly ridiculous.

I never intended to imply that the presence of bugs in the game means that ANet doesn’t care. As you state, that would be ridiculous. Every game has bugs. However, the fact that bugs and other issues persist in game, despite months or even years of people bringing them to ANet’s attention is highly suspect. Meanwhile, they direct their attention to other things and leave the bugs alone.

When ANet continually implements undocumented “hotfixes” to the game, (e.g. adjusting the terrain, which makes it harder to glide to the LastGear Standing HP), and yet ignores basic playability issues (e.g. Revenant stance issues), it makes me wonder. I’ve given just a couple of examples, but there are many in game.

HoT maps kinda like open world dungeon; it is linear even with different paths or lanes. And once you left, you lose everything if you cannot return to the same instance.

HoT has highlighted so many problems, there is bad press all around GW2 right now and so much of it is thanks to the megaserver problems. Frankly it shouldn’t even open another map until the previous map is full, literally cannot get a single other person into the map full…then and ONLY then should the megaserver open a new map. THAT is how a megaserver is supposed to function. The way it is working now is ridiculous.
