Q:
Storyline "Hearts and Minds"
hey guru,
I am 100% with you on the penalty box. My graphics were glitching and I couldn’t see any of the story unless someone was with me for some ridiculous reason, so I was stuck doing the stories with the party my first time through and I had the same trouble. I get the penalty box for hard mode, but for story mode- why?!
There are these whitish ley line funnels that spawn around the fight. At “take to the skies” cue, walk under one and it will boost you upward. (DON’T JUMP into it!) At this point open your glider. When you see a rock coming toward you bank your glider by turning with the WASD or drop your glider for a short time then bring it back up again.
Good Luck!
I don’t get the “penalty box”, either. We went in to that fight with a party of four. Two of us got put into the penalty box and had to wait out the rest of the fight, just watching and unable to help. Why not just say there’s no rez possible? But more importantly, why do something like that in the first place? Who would think that’s fun? Who would think that’s even a reasonable thing to do in a boss fight?
re: penalty box – From what I’ve read, it looks like you’re supposed to wipe to get everyone back. But of course, seeing what happens when you die, the people left don’t dare die for fear of everyone being in the penalty box and the fight being lost. And to make it even better the updraft/gilder mechanic is weird/bugged at that point so there’s a much better chance of players dying.(and getting stuffed in the penalty box) It’s the perfect end for an expansion filled with glitchy, buggy, grindy, gimmicky, B.S. that isn’t fun.

And the fact that they refuse to even acknowledge there are problems is so annoying.

I’m frustrated as well…
I tried doing this fight a week or so after the xpac launched, and it was horrendous… so I left it for awhile (and have been away from game a lot too, as I hate the new WvW desert BL and mechanics there… but that’s another story!) hoping it would be tweaked to change some of the ridiculous parts.
But still the penalty box is there, and the insanely buggy updraft/launch thing, which is bad enough trying to stay airborne, but then YOU HAVE ROCKS BEING FLUNG AT YOU TOO… and yeah, I do okay until the rock flinging, get knocked out of the air every time (as these things are so huge, and are really hard for me to dodge), and insta-die.
I SO wish they would either remove the penalty box, and make it so the boss wouldn’t reset on death (like many story dungeons, where if the NPCs are up still, they will “hold” it for a bit until you get back), OR change the glider mechanic so it’s a bit easier, removing the rock throwing.
I feel like the penalty box (and the boss resetting to full health if you die) should have been restricted to Extreme Mode, where they at least make sense.
The entire story is beyond ridiculous. If I want to play Kaizo Mario where every step must be pinpointed or else death and a restart occur, then I will go play Kaizo Mario. I don’t want this in GW2. On top of that, in my fight the floor was flashing and blurring so much that I got disoriented and headachy. Made it great fun when the glider updrafts failed and I had to desperately try to find some way off the ground. Then it glitched. Luckily the person with me knew how to damage the break bar because I couldn’t imagine starting that bullkitten all over again from the start. In fact, I owe my victory to them. Between migraine inducing visuals, game breaking bugs, overpowered enemies, and moves requiring kaizo reflexes – I was way out of my league.
Hey, A-Net, we aren’t all hardcore NES Hard gamers who enjoy glitches and flashing lights. This is extreme mode content for e-sports fans, not someone who games for a little challenge and to relax.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.

HoT wasn’t made to be easy and the final mission is no exception. I would not expect the final mission of a hard expansion to be “a little challenge”. However, that’s my perspective.
Aerlen is not referring to the difficulty of the mission, but the emphasis on all the jumping and gliding. (in our opinion, misplaced in a Fantasy CRPG) As well as the fact that there are issues with the updrafts in the last fight – if you walk into them, you can deploy your glider, if you jump into them, it bugs and you insta-die. And get stuck in a box able to do nothing but watch until the party wipes or until the end of the fight. We didn’t buy a platform jumper game, we bought a Fantasy CRPG. We expect the emphasis to be on fighting, not acrobatics.

GW2 is an action-hybrid RPG, which means there’s going to be an emphasis on both.

Yes it took me a while to figure out to calmly walk into the updrafts. Once you understand this, Mordy isn’t all that tough. I had a much more difficult time with the Eir and the others before him.

Its not about being hard or easy its about the fight being bugged, its about having to repeat the entire long fight again if you bug out and die die, its about having to do the entire long quest chain again if you have to repair your gear after bugging out multiple times, its about the updrafts being different from updrafts across the rest of the game and being hard to actually see, its about anet never even acknowledging the problems with the fight and quest………………..

I agree, the final mission does have a variety of problems to deal with. Most of them have been solved but I believe a few bugs still remain. I normally hear complaints about the mission before the final one. Where people get stuck in the rock after the cinema for defeating Faolin. That bug was reported last year. I haven’t tried playing that mission again this year.
All the fights were easy enough to solo up until the Boss fight where my problems began.
I agree with Lauren on this boss fight bit. I got the boss down to 25% first try(then of course failed half dozen more times) then knocked outta air even though i was dodging it and nobody came to rez me (npc like they had before) insta death and woke up in this penalty box thing and then had to restart the fight. And this is just for STORY! you should be able to rejoin the fight where you left off. I could understand this difficulty for Achievements, but for story? really? come on.
I assume the difficulty has something to do with the mix of being able to do achievements with story but this is just crazy compared to all the other story boss fights so far in HoT. Was going along fine solo’ing everything(like how i play the game) and now will have to TRY to find others to help me finish this as i can’t do it myself. >:(
edit : the difficulty on this STORY fight doesn’t even make sense if “Flights of Fancy- 5 pts- Prerequisite: Completing the Hearts and Minds story instance once to unlock it.” is true.

Been trying this instance multiple times solo and with groups recently neither seem to be any easier. The updrafts seem to be glitchy and are the main reason attempts fail constantly. Half if not more of the teams i’ve been in can’t get up into the air fast enough. Which usually by half way thru only 1 or 2 people are left to fight the rest of the battle. Is this really how it was planned to work? I find that jumping into the updrafts like normal doesn’t work. You have to walk under the updraft, then it lifts you up, but it doesn’t always allow you to open your glider, so you insta die. and Some can’t see the updrafts.
Would be nice if you could rejoin the fight instead of stuck up in a penalty box. OR wait until everyone is dead and then rejoin the fight where the last person left off without having to start completely over. Another idea: Make it past the first air phase- that saves your progress. If everyone dies you restart from that point and so on. And lastly you could just rejoin where the bosses health was when last person died like it is in MOST other story instances! Why is this any different?
I think i’ll just wait till the next release in April and see if you Anet have fixed these glitchy things or Made this part run a little smoother. Wasting an hour thru cut scenes you can’t skip, and a long instance, only to constantly fail on the pale tree because your group can’t get into the air is not a FUN thing to experience.
