Guild: Moonlit Renegades (Moon)
Highest-Level Toon: Markus Emmerich, 80 Human Scrapper
I am struggling because I have found that each Mastery XP bar fills at an agonizingly slow pace, even with things like Celebration Booster being active on my toon. Even when I try out a world boss or an event chain for a Daily, the XP I earn barely puts a notch into it. Therefore, I am wondering what things I could do to fill it up faster (this is in regards to both HoT and core Tyria Masteries). I am only Mastery level 5, and I do still have the rest of the Living World story in HoT to continue (recently finished the Verdant Brink part).
Note: I don’t have the time, especially on week days to do lots of dungeons, I haven’t explored the next 3-4 HoT maps, so I can’t yet engage in events there, and I really loathe PvP and WvW. Guess I am wondering how far up in Mastery level the HoT story would take me, if I was to do just that (though then there are story-important Masteries that are locked until I can get the XP for them).
Thanks!

Never pass by a ‘yellow’ creature/foe. They can be worth lots of bonus XP. Use all available XP boosts (from food, guild boosts, banners, boosters, etc.)
Do Daily Bounties, or the other Achievements that award massive XP for the reward.
Just a few suggestions….good luck.

You may want to check out the “adventures” in HoT. These are minigames that I personally dislike, but getting gold in an adventure is worth 2 mastery points and a boatload of experience. If you end up liking them, you can make significant progress toward your masteries just going around and completing adventures.
What Inculpatus cedo said is very important if your out killing. I’ve leveled many a toons with passive creatures being the best for bonus point. The farther you go off the beaten path the better. Bonus xp is tied to the amount of time any creature yellow or red have been on the map. The longer the better.
What AliamRationem said is great for very quick and also a decent amount of xp. There is a handful of adventures you can easily get gold on. If I recall getting gold is around 100k xp per adventure after you add the amount from all 3 boxes. These adventures take about 2 min each. Been awhile I was thinking there is at least 5 which are very easy and that would be about 500k xp per day in around 10-12 min total. I think there are more than 5 that are considered easy, just 5 offhand I can think of that are very easy.
If you are in a guild make sure to check out the npc in guild hall to get the 24 hour xp buff. Always maintain food. You can get 15% xp from regular cheap food then for around 1s or so per potion (not on game so cant be certain on price) you can buy powerful potion of scarlet slaying army and its a utility which gives 15% unlike the other utilities which give 10% If you have the laurels be sure to buy an ascended amulet then buy the +20% xp addon from laurel vendor.
With the right food and amulet alone you can maintain +50% without any other booster. If you use a kill streak, I cant say it’s the best but it worked great for me. It was doing Dragon Stand. And of course using your best aoe for easier tagging.
I feel like I’m missing some other easy ways to gain xp. Hopefully others will add what is missing

Echo that. There are some easier adventures, like Scrap Yard and On Wings of Gold which can give some sizable chunks of XP.
For as much as you can tolerate it, go through the story with multiple characters. Partially so you can see the other story branches and try for achievements, but finishing those gives semi-decent loot and advances XP by quite a bit.
Ride event trains as much as you can. I’ve had XP caps sneak up on my that way, and you’ll have less time to lament a crawling XP bar when you’re busy doing meta-event chains.
for the HoT mastery i usually run story but also running the meta events like AB map / DS map with xp boosters usually pays out pretty good xp wise. I like doing the DS map a little more cause faster and not as hard but again its up to you i would say use xp boosters, any food that gives xp (peppermint omnomberry bars usually work), guild bonus if you are in a guild, and halloween utility items like pumpkin oil has xp bonus too. these usually add up.
also only go after ones you need like gliding/exalted/talking to frogs the ones i kinda left are the td frogs last 2 and the last itzel cause they are good but not really needed.
honestly, Verdant Brink Day/Night Cycle gets so much experience I didnt even try to grind it and still have everything capped.
I have one more question related to Masteries: If I take my other 80s into Maguuma Wastes for the LV S2 story, would the XP from that go towards Core Tyria Masteries?
You can tell where the xp from story will go by the color of the mastery point icons that go with the achievements for that chapter. Red icons mean xp will be Core, green ones mean it will be for HoT.
Anything that existed before HoT will apply any xp earned towards Tyria. I believe that’s the case. Only xp earned in the 4 new maps go towards HoT mastery.
If you get tired of repeating LS story for xp there is 2 other places for fast xp. One I never did but heard it was very good was CoF farming. The other I did, map in Dry Top 5-10 min early to get on a good map and farm the dust storm events Lots of foes spawn and even more if there is alot of people there. Again use the toon which has the best aoe. Like guardian staff for tagging.
Event farm
Use food, utility, guild, and boosts.
Grind them
For HOT Mastery, the best one is doing a full DS meta with an XP booster on. Other metas give good XP to, but DS escort part is the best with its huge amount of enemies and event chains.
For Core Tyria, the Current event (Leyline / bandit) gives tome of tyrian mastery, which is a good chunk of XP and most are quite easy to do. Other than that, fractals are quite fast and gives good XP as well.

Doing the metas generally provides the easy experience. Use LFG to find the biggest groups.
Hero Point Trains are also a decent alternative.
For Core Tyria, Cursed Shore is a good place for event chains.

For HoT – Successful T4 VB night/Octovine/Chak Gerent/Dragon’s Stand meta, Adventures. Those are easy, some options take more time than others but are solid for the amount of effort put into, a good DS meta wih boosters can reach over 2m exp if you try to maximize your participation in all lanes.
Tyria – did my story with level 80 characters, gives a lot even when just doing the level 80 part of the story.
Update: Finished the current HoT Mastery I was working on (Updraft gliding) by trying out the Adventure that was yesterday’s Daily. I found that one to be pretty easy, got to Gold. Bugs in the Branches, though…eesh, I can’t imagine how to get over 10 bugs! I also just so happened to be in the right spot to do some nighttime camp defense/retake events. Now that I have updraft gliding, hopefully I can get to some Mastery and Hero Points and Vistas in Verdant Brink for more XP (want to do as much of that map as I can before I go on to the next one).

But…but… how can anyone have the heart to kill those innocent deer and happy pink moas by the beach?

Yeah that’s essentially how it’s done. I’d assume the “easy adventure” you found is the material pit (I used that one too ) try to do it every day if you can, you will notice serious progress within a few days.
Bugs in the branches has a bypass route via the Bounce shroom to the left from the start. It basically gives you 10-12 free bugs within 20s. That’s the whole trick to it. Many adventures have such a mastery gate. So don’t be sad if you have problems on one, it may very well be not your fault.
As for Central Tyrian masteries, I can only recommend low tier fractals (If you don’t want to dive too deep into them, if you get a taste for it however: Go for it!) They are quite easy and can be done in a rather short amount of time. Do as many as you like and quit when you got your fill for the day. Central Tyrian masteries require less XP than HoT ones, you will watch them fill quite quickly.
