[Suggestion] Main hand pistol for Mesmer spec

Reasons:
1. Mesmers only have two mainhand weapons (sword, scepter). If anything is given to them, it’d be great to increase the diversity of the mainhand weapon choice. We really don’t need another offhand (shield).
2. It’d be freaking great to use two pistols as a Mesmer, and would easily fit into a kind of tricky, illusionist gunslinger persona. Slanted hat, Zorro with guns type of person.
3. Pistol/torch, pistol/focus would be interesting, totally mesmer-y relevant mind-bending weapon combos.
4. Come on. Pistol mainhand!
Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that it’s probably too late in the development of HoT to make suggestions like this. Whatever the Mesmer specialization ends up getting is what has probably already been decided upon.
from what I’ve heard they wanted to add what mesmes lacks according to them, AOE dmg, obviously mainhand pistol wouldn’t fit AOE dmg role…
We (mesmer players) have been asking for a power based, main hand distance weapon forever. Afaik without even an answer.
Hardly expect ANet to give in now, that HoT is apparently mostly finished. But perhaps with expansion #2, after another 2 1/2 years… so let’s keep b… asking! ^^

What, having one two MH weapons and a truckload of secondaries isn’t good enough?
Another OH sounds so horrible I hope they’ve got something up their sleeve, because ANet can’t be that strange… right?

they added a shield.
they werent too concerned about aoe dmg.
mesmer has 2 new weapon skills, they are offhands, so generally long cool down. one of those two will be a phantasm, so it will probably be killed fast. We already got two aoe phantasms, they dont get to do much since they die with the enemy.
in short, no pistols, no aoe focus, though we may have an aoe skill.

Just two new weapon skills would be a thoroughly boring update for Mesmer (especially as part of an expansion) so I expect the specialisations have more to them than just allowing you to hold a new weapon type.

oh, they will, utilities, and an elite, possibly some changes to the way shatters work, but your offense is mostly from weapon skills

We know specializations are more than a new weapon, namely: 1 new healing skill, new utility skills, 1 new elite skill, new traits and a “changed profession mechanic”.

Oh was unaware of this new info. Sounds good.

When my human mesmer can wield Ilya in one hand and Lyss in the other, then all will be well in Tyria.
…. First I need to become rich enough to get those. The ability to wield them both won’t do me any good without them.
Oh was unaware of this new info. Sounds good.
it’s not new info, you just can’t read it’s on the HOT page from the announcement

This whole shield mess just proves that either the balance team don’t know what they are doing or that they couldn’t give a kitten about Mesmers and have no interest in listening to the people playing their game.
Its incredibly embarrassing for them, I already know people who are leaving the game because of their attitude. I’m currently just logging in for dailies just to keep up a bit on the off chance something amazing happens with the specialization. As soon as the spec information comes out and its as kitten as I am expecting, I’m uninstalling.

Or it could mean that you have no idea what changes are coming with the new healing, utilities, elite, profession mechanics, traits, and you are speculating an entire specialization will be unbalanced because of a 3 second long video clip that shows a mesmer with a shield. Then again seeing as how you are saying you are going to uninstall the game based off that 3 second long clip I guess a rational thinking is a little much to ask.

^ This! I am really starting to get annoyed by all of the pessimistic-debbie-downers that seem to be crawling out of the wood work as of late :/
People, please stop stop assuming the sky is falling from the little bit of information that we have received. Once we have the blog about the Mesmer spec (and all the other specs for that matter) then we can start claiming the “end of times”, “abbadons second coming”,“this is the end!” yadda yadda yadda.

It’s been mentioned before, and I’ll mention it again.
Making a suggestion for MH Pistol on Mesmer is fine, I’m all for it.
But those people kicking off angrily at the Mesmer “only getting offhand Shield and two weapons skills!” in some of the posts that follow. We don’t know that yet.
All we know is that they are getting off-hand Shield.
We do not know if they are getting a main-hand Pistol too or not. It’s quite possible. ANet just said one new weapon per profession (in this case, Shield). They did not say anything about reusing weapons the profession already has (don’t forget, Mesmer already has Pistol, just in offhand only) in different ways. Infact, they actually said they’d be taking currently existing concepts for weapons and classes and redesigning them for specializations, so hold your breathe and don’t just jump to conclusions.
Mesmer might still be getting a MH Pistol. Wait and see until there’s some confirmation they are not.

Well, Rangers are going to be Druids this has been confirmed, so that’s 5 new weapon Skills + a new Class Mechanic and other goodies, another confirmation is the Greatsword Necromancer, Hammer Engi and i believe guardian has been hinted at a Bow of some sort again 5 new weapon skills for each of the classes.
It would make sense to me that if the weapon is not 2h that the other classes would receive at least 1 main hand and 1 off hand to balance things out?

I mean I outright said I was going to uninstall because Anet doesn’t listen to its customers and I was going to wait until they actually gave more information on the specilisation to give them one more chance but no I am uninstalling based on 3 seconds of gameplay footage.
Don’t be so immature and insult people because they don’t worship your precious Anet and read my actual post before responding to me next time.

And 12 for greedy Elementalists with their MH Sword.
When Warrior and Thief come up, they too might get more skills that it would first appear, due to an extra Burst skill (Warrior) that would be required for a new MH weapon, and the Dual-Wield Skill 3 Mechanic of Thieves if they get a new 1Her.
Also there’s nothing to say Engie might not get a new Kit, which would be another +5 weapon skills (not to mention the extra utilities they’ll be getting anyway via Toolbelt).
With all this in mind, I too find it very hard to believe they would leave the poor Mesmer with only two weapon skills. They’re almost certain to have something (such as the MH Pistol example) to make-up for it.

Sadly this is not the case. It was stated the specializations would only get 1 new weapon. Main hand pistol might be released as a spec later down the road just not right now. Lets just hope they role out more specs at a decent pace.

I did read the post. In it you stated that OTHERS are leaving due to a lack of communication and that is the mesmer spec is half as bad (using a little less colorful language than you in this case) that you were going to be uninstalling the game. If you wished to get across the message that you are unhappy with the lack of communication then next time clearly state that you are a part of the ones that will quit the game because of this, instead of saying others have and then make the same threat of uninstalling based on the reveal of one spec. Your current wording says otherwise.
Also just because I wish to hold my opinion about how good or bad the specs will be until we actually have real info about them does not mean I worship Anet. It’s called not judging a book by it’s cover. When the mes spec is released and it’s crap then I will say something but to sit here and say the spec is unbalanced and will be crap with my only source of info is a 3 second clip is just ridiculous. However if not making wild assumptions based off a 3 second clip is considered “worshiping” then I guess you can call me Pope Tasty.

I’m no judging a book by its cover, I am judging it based on 3 years worth of balance updates.

you guys boundless optimism is interesting but they already said one weapon per specialization.
you can hope for other things, but weapons, your only getting one, and its a shield.

Well as i love to be pedantic last time i checked a shield is not a weapon its a type of personal armor, :P

Who said it’s not the case? ANet never said it. I already know it was stated by ANet that specializations would only get one new weapon – infact if you read my post properly you will see I already mentioned it myself! So how does restating it discount what I said at all? Once again, if you read my post, giving Mesmer a main-hand Pistol would not be a new weapon, as Mesmers can already use the Pistol (yes, it’s true!) in their off-hand, which does not make it a new weapon for them and means MH Pistol is still a possibility. If you understand the semantics of what was said, it makes sense. I can’t remember specific examples, but we’ve have actually seen ANet use this kind of logic before.
If you still don’t understand what I was saying though, let me break it down for you in a visual form you may understand better:
Current Mesmer Weapons
Greatsword – 2H
Staff – 2H
Sceptre – MH
Sword – MH/OH
Focus – OH
Torch – OH
Pistol – OH
Spear – 2H
Trident – 2H
Total Usable Weapons: 9
Post HoT Mesmer Weapons
Greatsword – 2H
Staff – 2H
Sceptre – MH
Sword – MH/OH
Focus – OH
Torch – OH
Pistol – OH/MH (speculation)
Shield – OH (new entry)
Spear – 2H
Trident – 2H
Total Usable Weapons: 10
Total New Weapons in HoT = 1
See? The Mesmer still only has one new weapon – but it gets to use one of it’s old weapons in a different way. ANet’s statement of “each specialization only gets one new weapon” does not remove the possibility of the above. Mainhand Pistol would not be a new weapon. It’s just a different way to equip a weapon they already have (and I reiterate on what I said before, ANet have already said that they’d be using current existing weapons in different ways – people presumed they meant the Staff being used as a melee weapon rather than a magical one by the Revenant – but what’s to say they didn’t also mean something like this?).
Now that’s not to say I’m 100% certain this will happen, I’m really not. I know ANet can be lazy sometimes so it would not surprise me if it wasn’t; But that doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility.

Essentially for me, it’s this above all else. A-net has been known to mice their words using semantics, this may be a prime example of it. I can literally see it already “Remember we said no NEW weapons”. We all know what they’re like.
They do this.
Remember the Mesmer reveal and they had the ‘Ministrel’ displayed on release and it ended up being nothing but a fun jab at the community?
And before anyone steps in and flags me as someone who is too optimistic, we’re just using their use of language in the past as a precedent.
IF i can sum it up in one paragraph:
I’m expecting to be disappointed by only having shield available, but it they do end up giving us a mainhand pistol and it was all tricky semantics the entire time, I won’t be surprised

….
Sorry but changing the hand a weapon is used in is equivalent to a new weapon. Take for example a thief. The pistol that is used in the main hand offers different play options than the off hand pistol. Just like with a mesmer a main hand sword offers something different from its off hand counterpart. Changing the hand makes a huge difference in this game. Besides if we really want to get technical then no spec is getting a new weapon. All the weapons the specs are getting are weapons that already exist in the game, they just didn’t have access to them. If you wish to talk semantics then no class will be receiving a new weapon.

I was quite disappointed myself by the video showing only a shield on mesmer. However, I believe that we should not assume anything until it is released officially (i.e. through the constant blog posts we are getting, which I love). I have not lost hope in the balancing/specialization team, yet – I am still holding an open mind until it is properly announced.

Mesmers have plenty of AOE damage, so that’s not it.
They either have something really cool planned for the shield, or the over all specialization is going to be something ‘over the top’ compared to classes that are getting 5 new skills, rather then the Mesmers 2 new skills…per the OH weapon.
that is my feeling on this.
And yes, Scepter/Sword for main hand has been going on FAR too long. We need another ranged ranged open for MH, one that is power based.
I think a ranged Dagger that cleaves 3 targets would be kinda cool…Think Phantom Dagger, Hell the new Class throws a HAMMER, so why not?!
