Thinking ahead into the future here, I believe gw2 is a game that will continue to adapt grow, and last the test of time, surviving ten, maybe even fifteen years into the future. In that time the world map will begin to fill up; northern shiver peaks and char homeland, the ring of fire and the crystal desert, possibly even cantha, elona, and continants we haven’t even heard of yet; and with each new map, the number of mastery points will continue to rise, up to the hundreds, possibly even thousands.
With that in mind, I suggest that the player mastery number show the number of masteries completed/mastered, rather than the number of points players used to complete/master it. This will simplify it greatly and give other players a more accurate gauge of how many masteries you’ve completed, making the number more meaningful and consise, and honestly, less scary for new and returning players. You can then look at another player and see that he’s completed 30 masteries, rather than that he has 372 points, which could honestly mean anything, as you cant really wrap your mind around such a number. The mastery system is supposed to replace lvling in the endgame, and I believe this change would make them closer in feel and appearence, and simply make them more understandable.
It’s not a big deal, just a thought, I want to see what you guys think.

Sounds like a good idea to me. There’s already one guy who’s maxed out the Maguuma lines so at day 5 he is showing a mastery number of (iirc) 115.

Yes, but some masteries are much harder than others and the system today reflects how much work you have put into it rather than just a count. Having five tier 1 masteries is not the same as having five masteries from the same line.
i saw a 149 yesterday.

After they’ve finished enough mastery lines it starts getting into silly numbers. It hasn’t even been a week and some people are already over 100. ANet said there are more Masteries they are going to add as it’s easy for them to do. As soon as enough people have hit the end of the first bunch, drop 5 or 10 more. Rinse and repeat. Soon enough there are going to be really inflated numbers on each name plate. Bringing them down to completely done mastery sets will clean up those numbers so they make more sense.

Honestly, I disagree, the mastery points arnt hard to get. While some are gated, requiring certain masteries to reach, all are easier than many of the hero challenges, and currently I find myself with more points than I can use, as the true difficulty is filling up the experience bar. Now, I haven’t looked, but if a lvl 5 mastery requires more experience than a lvl 1, I will ceed you that point.
However, even if that is the case, that does not take away from the fact that building up numbers like this gives no real inclination of how many masteries a player has, only an obscure number of points that tells nothing, and as more are added to the game, will simply become rediculously inflated. I find a simplified number of completed masteries to be more tidy and comprehensive.
An additional problem I considered is that a player in the 100s of completed points, won’t have such a grand number displayed anymore, however, that won’t take away from the fact that they’ll still have more masteries, and thus a higher number displayed than anyone else. As such, the ranking stays fairly the same with limited fluctuations.
In the end, the goal after all, Is to catc-complete them all, so number of completed masteries rather than completed points better achieves that.
