Same for commander tags? At least before commanders can tag up the first time in a map they should be required to answer general tactics questions about supply and siege and how to send out scouts, as well as questions on how to motivate others as well as other military questions. After all, all’s fair in PvE and war, right?
ANet may give it to you.

I don’t think any one knows every event or map. I think every ones issue is they paid gold and others got a free tag that you can get as well. theirs a few other threads about this I don’t see half as many mentor tags on a map as I do commander tags , how about we take commander tags away from people that afk running into a wall or standing in a safe village in cursed shores…..I cant believe stuff like this bothers people.
Beyond the argument of knowing maps/etc. I wish there was some sort of mentor-finder type LFG that would allow mentors to list themselves (and their areas of expertise) for new players to find them. Something that would allow a mentor to broadcast their willingness to help players without having to have a tag over their head. Using an LFG style system would also allow players to find mentors on maps outside of the one they are currently on.

i’m sure this could of been said in a shorter way
Yeah. You could just have been honest and said that you hate it that folks get mentor tags for free and that you think those tags should be removed or made unusable because it’s so unfair or something. That would have been shorter. ;p

Dots and capitals, my friend. Dots and capitals.
Also kind of Anet’s fault for placing the mentor tag/title as the first unlockable perk in the Pact Commander trait. Placing it a little down the mastery track would make them a lot less obvious.

as it is rare to see rude commanders, it is also rare to see misuse of mentor tag, and such cases are exceptions. Keeping in mind that it is easy to achieve and yet on most maps we see more commanders tags than mentors, which indicates that the player base is making conscious use.
I’ve yet to encounter a situation where it felt like an issue, but maybe I just play with nicer people by chance.
Problem with what you’re proposing is, anything that’s a barrier to tagging up just puts a strain on QOL. Mentor tags are great as they are now, for the purpose of mentoring or leading.
You have to be really careful of not throwing out the baby with the bathwater here. Stifling a few obnoxious people is not worth destroying QOL for all the people with good intentions, imo. Look at the new time-out feature on events. That’s exactly the sort of thing you get when you prioritize punishment of unwanted behavior over encouragement of good behavior.
A solution may exist, somewhere, somehow, but I don’t believe it’s buried in punishment or restriction.
Ive only run into maybe one or two that had the mentor tag up, but did nothing with it, and clearly weren’t there to mentor people.
I personally use my tag just to let people know where I am, where a quest or an item is. I tend just to answer people in map chat without the tag if someone needs help.
As far as people qq’ing over this being a free tag? get over it.

My suggestion is for anet to leave them alone. They’re not a problem to most people. They are only a problem to the jelly types.
I have seen many skilled mentors and many bad ones, personally i dont have any problem with mentor tags themselves. It would be nice if they were lower down on the pact commander mastery.
What does annoy me a bit is that mentors get a pre name in chat when tagged up.. which is a feature commanders have wanted for a while and still dont have.
More than anything I would like to see Com added as a pre name to commander tags in chat.
p.s. i know this is unlikly but a coloured symbol that matchs your tag colour would be even better.
so i could be:
[purple symbol] kusaku: said blah blah in chat
(edited by Kusaku.9056)
That’d be cool, and yea, having the Com tag in chat would help.

Do not change the Mentor Tags !
The majority of people complaining are people that paid for Commander Tags and find the Mentor Tag competing with theirs on a Map.
As someone who has both a Commander and Mentor tag, I do not have an issue. If anything, I find Mentor tags helpful in many maps where events are taking place and no Commander has a tag on, they actually help people locate others.
So what if on the extreme side, some maps may have 10 mentor tags (or more) on ? I think it actually helps people see where other players are.
And in HoT with low populations on maps, that’s a really good thing !
Yes that chat icon is needed.

My only complaint about Mentor tags (I have both Mentor and Commander tags) is the obnoxious overhead icon. Anet, please make this icon smaller. Also, perhaps change the “Mentor” text in chat to be a small apple icon.
Smaller less extravagant mentor icon, and chat icon for commanders, both ideas I think would be great to have in general.

Here’s an idea…get rid of them. I ignore them as is.
Crystal Desert
If you choose to ignore em then good on you, mentor tag is there for people who need/want guidance, if you don’t need it, then it doesn’t apply to you.
Same as a commander tag, if you want to head to it n follow the commander then do so, but there is no requirement to go to any and all tags you see…..
