Im probably gonna get flack for this but… I absolutely despise this map..

is it the events?
the mobs?
the bugs?
am I just a frog hater?

none of the above..

It’s the layout…
I have probably thee worst sense of direction possible.. which makes navigating this map a nightmare for me..
I can’t find my way around it.. and if not for the personal story (and Tp to a friend) I’d probably never have found my way to Dragons Stand..

I find myself constantly running in circles trying to find my way to Hero Points or PoI’s
and lets not forget events I am trying to get to that one minute I am above them the next I am below.. then above again.. then below again..
its beyond stressful and its soo darn irritating…
I literally get headaches trying to navigate this map..

please for the love of Grenth.. don’t make any more maze like maps like this..
at least not without some kind of marker system to help people find their way around..
for those of us with no sense of direction this map is a cruel torture

I agree. The map is awful. The events should have something saying if is below or up. Because is really stressful I’m trying to reach the events and every time I find them they are finished because I lose to much time trying to find them.

The events actually do have a arrow marker showing if you are above them or below them..

the main problem is that if you don’t know how to get to the event.. then you can’t participate lol

I’ve seen quite a few coms asking for more people only to be met with quite a bit of map chat spam of people who have no idea how to get to the event lol
I do see the humor in it but it does wear thin pretty quickly when you just can’t find your way to where you want to go

Yea I remember trying to go to Rata Novus. I ended up underwater around the SW side of the map :P. Its a confusing map and gliding makes it more difficult to navigate sometimes. This is why it is frustrating it will take awhile for everyone to have some kind of understanding of the map. I have map completion on it and I know I missed a lot of stuff.

Agree. The new multi-layered maps are horrible. Yes, there are some people who love them but for me it is pure annoyance. I wait for Dulfy to put out a guide, I follow it then I am done with the zone. There is no way I will grind out enough Mastery Points to complete Dragon Stand. It is just too tedious and NOT fun.

I know that out of 180 guild members, i have about 0 (zero) requesting parties to run any of the HoT maps. They like SW, and I see requests to team up there, but no one wants anything but the Mastery Points and such. And then there is the constant grind, grind grind for the EXTREMELY limited Flax Resources. HoT is really a disappointment.

Those arrows are great… but why don’t they have them displayed all the time? Is there an option that turns that on? I find myself getting to something only to discover it’s at a different level and i have to backtrack quite a ways to find a route to it. It’s hard to plan ahead.

You know is TANGLED depths, is supposed to be hard. First time just wander around.
The main point is the confluence, from there 4 routes goes around the map with caverns that take you up or down. Once you know where a re the access, the map is a joke to navigate. Nuoch hollows mastery will help a LOT to cut the navigation times but that’s it.

I’m honestly bored by the flat layouts, TD entertains me the most.

The map is really complex and convoluted. You have to get used to it and know the events. I was running around now for some time, and it gets better and better. Unfortunately, most people just skip this map at the moment. Hope there will be more people in the future.

To me it’s intriguing. First time trying to get to somewhere is like “ok here’s the tunnel there” and after a while “umm, nope, this wasn’t it”.

Sure I have a good map memory and will be able to navigate most environments after a while of orientation. I can understand that people with poor spatial awareness and map memory can be in trouble.

I see it as a welcome challenge. Also love Verdant Brink with the huge vertical aspect. Auric Basin is pretty much the worst of the maps so far, because of the simplified layout.

Map completing is a pain, and the meta is impossible if people don’t try to learn how to navigate it, which takes work.

But I love the design. If it’s not your cup of tea, you can play elsewhere. But for people looking to feel lost and that sense of adventure, there is nowhere else like TD.

I found it really hard to navigate from the starting WP. I would suggest opening up the other waypoints asap. The ley-line waypoint is the most useful. It is pretty easy to navigate from there to the orge camp, the SCAR camp and Novus. Having the frog waypoint is useful too since it has tunnels to all the other map areas.

When I first started, I got lost all the time. I really disliked this map. After spending many hours farming, I started getting use to all the intricacies. Having nuhoch wallows and waypoints definitely helped.

Eventually, though, I became so use to the map it became second nature to me. I absolutely love it now. It’s one of my favourite maps in the game. You basically need to take a few hours taking a tour and getting use to the general layout. After that, you can use Teku Nuhoch waypoint and the wallows to get to half the places on the map. Most of the other half can be gotten via waypoints directly. It’s actually pretty logical to navigate after a while..

I gotta say, 3 months later, I still hate this map.

Pretty sure this map was designed to by navigated by waypoint and Nuhoch Wallows. Knowing those makes the map quite easy to get around in. It wasn’t designed to be running everywhere.

It is hands down the worst zone I have ever played in any game ever. Even now that I know and understand the layout it’s still a bloody nightmare to navigate effectively. Quite frankly I’m not too keen on the vertical layer desgin at all, but verdant brink was quite interesting (At least the top two layers)

Yeah which earned a lot of negativity. Lots of people were complaining how faceroll and boring the actual content is, which was the case. It takes a bit time to learn how to navigate in the new areas, but it’s not that hard. And dying isn’t that bad, at least you have to learn what your class can do and learn the functionality and what you can do.

I was there at release, 3 months later I still don’t like TD. So I’m not sure what that has to do with being a ‘filthy casual’. But if I hardcore ‘Dark Souls’ it for hours on end I’m sure I’ll get it? That, btw is assuming I am a filthy casual, which, even based on your criteria, I can safely say I’m not.

In any event, the previous post you replied to was referring to TD, I’m not sure why you elected to change that in your later post and infer he had a problem with all areas, which he didn’t.

You and everyone else. Conceptually it’s a great idea, but it needs more WPs so we can go whoa the first time and then have WPs to skip it the second time around.

Recently a guildie was ‘Well, time to head to TD, lets see if it’s as bad as people say’ and our guild chorused ‘good luck!’.

Half an hour later he was ‘Wtf is this place…!’

Yes, Yes and no. How does preference / taste in zone design alert you to a player being casual? Somehow you want to compare the difficulty and skill required in Dark Souls to grinding effective ways of traversal and finding your way through a clustered mess of a zone in GW2? It was never about it being hard, it’s about it being boring / tedious. Mkay?

That “faceroll, press 1111, boring” core content is what made and kept GW2 as one of the top MMORPGs today and its also what paid for HoT. Lets see what HoT pays for

Okay, sorry I misinterpreted your statement with the difficulty of the enemies. But then again, you learn the zones. TD is convoluted, yes, but after a while you can navigate most parts and you know where the events are.

About the grind. I stated this in a post earlier: 1. It’s account wide, you don’t need to repeat those materies at all after you learned it once. 2. It’s not that of a grind, or do you think leveling is a grind, too? Be cause it’s basically the same.

I like Tangled Depths. I’ll admit it has frustrated me a few times, but when I finally do figure out how to get somewhere, it is rewarding. Getting to that same spot next time is simple because I learned the way.

There are many, many maps in Tyria that are fairly “flat” and you can easily run to pretty much any spot on the map. Having a few new maps like Tangled Depths that have some verticality to them are nice.

It’s not so much the layout that is irritating. For me, it was spending an hour running and backtracking through tunnels only to come across an area that was impassable due to poison gas or an unsoloable champ. It is fun when its challenging. It stops being fun when you reach a point where you have to either come back after you gain some masteries or put together a group.

Once you understand how everything branches out from the confluence into the 4 lanes, the map isn’t that difficult.

And yes, I admit it, I do enjoy the meta on this map when it is organized; its a pity it only happens every 2 hours

The reason you stated why you don’t like it is actually why it’s the best map in the game. If you’re new to it you’ll get lost and if you take a wrong turn have a credible chance of dying. You need to think and earn your waypoint unlocks. The meta is also fun and tests your awareness and mastery over endurance management. Since thief is hella squishy you also need to master your weapon dodges like sword/dagger 3 or staff 3 and 5 to have a well timed dodge while still DPS’ing, though should still be mindful of falling rocks and doughnuts.

I’ve recently played with a friend who just started HoT and entered TD for the first time. Even though I know the map layout very well we got lost a couple of times trying to get to the story points. The map is a bit annoying to navigate if you don’t have the waypoints and the wallows mastery. Mob density is pretty high in some areas.

But once you have them it’s really not that difficult. The four lane event cycles are centered around their respective waypoints. You can just follow them without even knowing much of the layout. It’ll guide you to most of the areas. The meta event is extremely straight forward. Ley Line Confluence waypoint and from there to the end of the four tunnels and back.

Just give it a try. Be there right after the meta event resets, go to one of the starting points of the events. I’d say SCAR is the easiest to follow, because the area is not that “vertical”. Event chain takes ~30-60 Mins depending on the number of people. You’ll get to know the area pretty good. The NPCs always know there way around.

I think the map is interesting and I like it a lot. It’s just a matter if getting the feeling for it. It’s probably best to not force yourself to complete it 100% “right now”.
