Did anyone else notice the tengu smack dab in the middle of the screenshot in the latest news post/preview of HOT??

I’m going to assume it’s just an NPC… but still… Dare to dream we get another playable race.

It’s an NPC from the new Stronghold PvP mode. Some of the press event videos showed them spawning.

Seems to be the archer NPC from the new Stronghold PvP mode. Notice the skritt doorbreaker next to him.

Actions, not words.

Tons of people ask for Tengu to be playable and ArenaNet uses them in screenshots as NPCs instead.

Also, Tengu were confirmed to not be coming in the x-pac.

Same as templates.

Devs can troll too.

And so you should. They’ve confirmed that they would not be adding any new races as it would not actually add anything to the game (since all races are technically the same). It would be cool, but they aren’t doing it.

They’ve also been quoted as saying “Nothing is off the table”. And I think they could add tons at least story wise. But yeah… we’ll leave this in the “dream” category.

These are actually my first posts in the forums… Been playing since GW1. I lurk quite a bit, and I love reading what everyone has to say about the game.

They should sell race change potions for gems and time to time add some unlockable races.
Tengu, kodash at first round example.

You mean add new races as temporary skin change only? No thanks. I’d rather wait two years to have them add Tengu as an actual new race than have Tengu tomorrow as a skin.

Choosing to ignore the skritt in the very same screenshot invalidating this whole line of thinking.

If you’ve watched anything about the Stronghold mode — needn’t be much, as a non PvPer I’ve barely glanced at it — you’ll know that one of the match mechanisms is to choose to build archers (Tengu) and bombers (Skritt). Bombers don’t fight, archers do, but you need bombers to get through the enemy gate.

All you’re seeing in that screenshot is a built item like a ballista or a trebuchet, only in this case it’s an NPC unit that will help you assault the other team (and defend against their assaults on you).

Except I knew that the skritt bomber was part of the game as an NPC. I haven’t watched any of the PVP video stuff as I don’t do it (or WvW), so although I knew from reading an article that the Skritt bombers were part of it, I had zero knowledge of the Tengu being part of it. (So much for them being non-aligned and non-interferring.)

So, no, it doesn’t really invalidate my line of thinking. I just didn’t have all of the necessary data to evaluate that picture properly. Now I do…

I’ll never understand why so many people want Tengu and Skritt – I mean I kind of get Tengu, cause they were in GW1, but I played GW1 for a long time and I still wouldn’t wanna play them. Maybe players like them cause they brought them money? cough feather farming nostalgia cough.

They’re both so tiny and we already have glorified rats that is the Charr (and they look better IMO), we don’t need any more hunchbacked furry creatures, we need something entirely new – like Largos or Margonite or Mursaat. Now those races I’d get behind.

Forever a supporter of more male skimpy armor

The mists is an entirely different ball-game – all bets are off there. I’m not sure they’ll explain exactly why whichever critters that show up do so – but the explanations of things like Fractals gives me the impression that it’s kind of like dreams. They may draw on reality, but there may not be that much of a resemblance.

And regarding the interest in tengu and skritt – I believe the GW1 segment of tengu fans were mostly won over by Factions and particularly Talon Silverwing. I think there were a few people who didn’t play that but just thought a bird-race was a neat and relatively uncommon idea – or they just saw That Concept Art from Kekai – but I’m not sure what the proportions are, exactly.
Skritt I’m a little less certain about – they can be pretty funny though and I think that has a lot to do with it.
I wouldn’t characterize tengu as “tiny” though – they’re about as big as norn, but just don’t stand as straight. Skritt are, of course, and uh… you’d have to shrink equipment a lot for them. The asura aren’t much (if any) taller, but they aren’t so thin either.

Just a random PuGgle.

Words cannot describe how disappointed I was to hear Tengu were NOT being added in the expansion. I have been looking forward to new races for years, Hell, I was sad the tengu got cut from the original lineup. While I still intend buying the expansion, I should point out I’d be willing to pay the cost of buying GW2 in the first place again JUST FOR TENGU ALONE. Not to say I’d be HAPPY if they charged that much to unlock them as playable, but I’d do it if it was offered. If they released them at a fair price, I’d be extatic.

Tengus are just unrealistic as a playable race, sure A.Net wanted to implement them before the release but there had to be reason why they decided against it.
And I think the reason would be the problem of having another non-humanoid race. Why would that be a problem? Because of armors and outfits.

Right now we have charrs asura and humaniods (Sylvari, Humans, Norn), this means every outfit release would consist of a humanoid version, a charr version and an asura version. It’s obvious that charr and asura versions don’t require them to make a completely new model but still, they have to put work into it to adjust the models, now add tengus and they would have to add another new model. It get’s even worse if you add armors to that calculation.

Now let’s say they decide to implement tengus to the game, what would they have to do first? Adjust every armor/outfit skin that is in the game for tengu, even armors that no one will ever use, it is so much “wasted” time, for a race that will most likely be played by the minority of the players.

This is just what I think is the reason why we are never going to see tengus or any other non-humanoid as a playable race.

That reason might have been that they wanted to save Tengu for an expansion.

And I think the reason would be the problem of having another non-humanoid race. Why would that be a problem? Because of armors and outfits.

Tengu actually have the same body structure as the Charr, thus I don’t think this concern is justified.

I’ve seen a tree trunk in the video. Confirmed next-race. Also on the tree trunk were inscribed 3 lines. ANet is the developer of Half Life 3.

As much as I would love to have Tengu as a playable race, among others, it would require a heck of a lot more work than creating a new profession. Not only would they have to create new personal story elements and dialogs, and various other NPC dialogs, they would also need to rework all existing armour and weapons to fit them. On top of that all future armour and weapons would need to be designed for the new race as well, potentially slowing down how long it takes to design and release new armour and outfits.

I think a race changer (for the existing races) would be a much more likely thing to see in the future than an entire new race. But who knows what the future holds.

Would love to have a Quaggan Revenant.

We already have the charr that are ugly as sin, we don’t need no freaky stinky looking birds.

This is true, at least to some extent. I mean professions take way more time in terms of balance, bug fixes, getting it’s own niche and so on (not just before they are added to the game but also afterwards). Professions also have their own animations. Adding new professions gets increasingly difficult. I have little doubt that the Revenant is the last one to be added, especially since we now have the same number of light, medium and heavy armor users.

they would also need to rework all existing armour and weapons to fit them. On top of that all future armour and weapons would need to be designed for the new race as well, potentially slowing down how long it takes to design and release new armour and outfits.

As I said above this actually does not really apply to Tengu.

I think a race changer (for the existing races) would be a much more likely thing to see in the future than an entire new race. But who knows what the future holds.

Actually Arenanet has said multiple times quite clearly that they will never add a race changer since they value story and story is so intimately tied to your race.
