The cursor. Do something about it.
I’m kind of relieved to read this. I thought it was just me.
It’s not a problem all the time but sometimes I lose it too and end up waving my mouse around desperately trying to find it.
Same here. Add ons could fix this problem, but Anet doesn’t let the community make add Ons.
LOL! i lose my cursor ALL the time, I would atleast like to increase the size, or have another for it.
To be fair, a lot of this is just intrinsic issues with mouse and keyboard. Keeping your cursor in check is sort of a skill you need to pick up.
That said, new cursor choices and sizes couldn’t hurt.
Try some mouse sensitivity settings in the meantime. I found I kept much better track of my cursor when I turned them up, and setting it to your own preferences will help.
I already sugested it like ages ago. There is a simple way to find cursor.
First go to “Control Panel/Mouse”. In “Pointer Options” tab tick “Show location of pointer when I press CTRL key” and apply settings.
Start game. If you are in full screen mode you wont see any changes. If so, go to in game options and in visual options switch from fullscreen to windowed fullscreen. One you do this you will be able to find mouse pointer more easy when pressing CTRL

That doesn’t help at all. With all the movement some fights require and all the visual noise on screen, it is virtually impossible to keep up with the small and drably colored pointer when it matters most. Mouse sensitivity has no relevance to visibility.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who lost their cursor during fights.
I feel less… awful.

I’ve never experience this problem you speak of, but them maybe it’s because I’m watching my ground targeting itself and not looking for the mouse pointer.

Oh you poor thing. You’ve clearly never experienced a GW2 zerg where, if you can see the ground at all, you’re obviously in the wrong place.

What was that what the devs said about playing the game, not playing the UI? I’d rather pay my attention to the game itself, not to where my cursor was last. And yes, with too much sfx generally associated with massive zerg encounters, looking for aoe targetting cicle can often be even harder than finding the cursor.

I’ve had mine disappear in fights and the only way I can bring it back is by using an AOE skill at some random site, wherever the invisible pointer is at.
Very annoying.
ANet may give it to you.
I remember this being a complaint that players had since beta. Letting us change the color would help a lot. Also having it two-toned or shadowed with a second color would greatly improve its visibility.
Yolo Mouse will resolve all your problems. (the programm is really called like that)

yeah the moment you activate a ground target ability you basically get a giant red or green indication of where your mouse is.

Which is not exactly what OP seems to be having.

Before I go roaming or raiding, I putt my mouse behind my back of my character’s head.
I Always run while I press and hold right mouse button right. I only use legt mouse button to look around me, behind me etc. But I always put my cursor back to the back of my head. If I’m in a zero vs zerk vs zerk fight, I already know were my cursor is. But yeah it would be better off if we could customize our cursors. I would like a bright orange or green. Something that looking bright and noticable cause the cursor we have now is cr#p…

Second on the Yolomouse recommendation. It does the job beautifully. You can use CTRL-ALT – and = to decrease/increase the size as well. Or is it CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-… check the documentation
You can add your own cursors too, find the INI file in your appdata.. I can’t remember if it’s local or roaming, but you will find it easily enough.
Mouse centering and improvements to the “ESC” binding for untargeting would also be awesome, but I can’t recall ever seeing a dev response on any of these 3 items previously.
my mouse even disappears when salvaging stuff in my inventory…
Yeah, it’s pretty bad. I would agree we need something that is a lot more visible.
I personal preference would be for my cursor to glow and pulse. That might help make it more visible. Dark cursors blend in too easily. And a white cursor is boring. A glow effect that isn’t static could be an enjoyable solution.

yeah the moment you activate a ground target ability you basically get a giant red or green indication of where your mouse is.
Question – did you test that before posting? I did before my earlier post to be certain. And again just now.
You’re wrong. I usually take my elementalist to zergs with a staff, attuned to fire. So I’ve got 2 ground targeted aoes, one on kitten cooldown. Yet I have the cursor problem. Why?
You do NOT get a giant red or green indication of where your mouse is. You DO get a giant green or red circle ON THE GROUND, assuming you can see it. That’s an assumption which more often than not fails in zergs. Players and / or mobs can completely obscure the circle.
Don’t believe me? Just log in a character with a ground targeted ability and activate it anywhere with players and / or mobs. The circle appears behind / under character models.
Does the Windows option for pressing Ctrl to locate the cursor work in-game? That might help, though I suspect it doesn’t show with the game running.

Also in some places where there is a small amount of water over the ground, or if you’re high up on platforms that can be removed, you can’t see the circle either.
It would be nice if ground targeting highlighted all targets within the AoE at the time.

they should have an option where pressing the ` key or whatever makes the cursor glow/pulse with a noticeable color.

When you hold the mouse right-click button to turn the camera, the cursor goes invisible (I don’t know why). So in the heart of combat, they are often misplaced specially if they appear nowhere close to where you expect it to be.
It would be nice if there’s an option to snap the cursor to the center after turning the camera.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
my mouse even disappears when salvaging stuff in my inventory…
HA, I always get that when salvaging. I thought it was just me.
The absolute only thing that has helped me is getting inexpensive mice that have multiple buttons. ( I say inexpensive because I am poor and usually the games I play I play alot and end up going through them quickly. )
These mice are really nice they don’t take much maintenance and the software is good.
I’m right now using one made by Logitech G502 but I also have a backup or two by Azio and I started off using the Azio but I got some money for my birthday and got the Logitech. I can say I’ve noticed no difference in the two they have great software and the Azio had programmable buttons as well. I then just set the buttons to keyboard keys I only use for gaming and I’ve been able to do everything in this game and in games like NWO which has just as many commands but also a mount to use (and it’s best to use mounts in that game as quickly as possible if mobs are around.)
Not saying they shouldn’t work on it because it is annoying but just trying to help with a solution I found that works for me.
You know what I like about the targeting cursor? Sometimes when you’re trying to target an enemy with an AoE the cursor rolls over the health bar and… it defaults to centering the AoE on your character. In fact rolling over any UI element centers the AoE on you instead of ignoring it or targeting the player/mob the health bar belongs to.
And by “like” I mean “loathe”.
people using third party software to fix it (yolomouse), gonna install it too i guess.
would like to see fix for it ingame though…something interesting could be added AS an option in options.
yeah. When i play certain very vindictive dungeon runner, i can’t get past how simple, intuitive and well thought out combat controls are there.
While in gw2 i get the feeling half of the bloody battle takes place in menu options where you have to select/deselect one option after another to get something that vaguely reminds responsive almost non player hindering controls.
A way to find your mouse would be sooooo helpful.
Maybe put a hotkey in the options menu that focusses the arrow in the center of the screen?
Yet another epic game where my ground targeted aoe took few seconds to happen because i couldn’t find the cursor.
Dear a-net, i’ve just about had it with that ninja cursor of yours that in heat of battle is impossible to locate on more then one occasion. It’s not a major world changing, fix, so pretty please do something about it.
Especially with the widely tauted challenging content that’s to come with HoT. I wanna die when i screw up, not when i decide to slot aoe skill on my bar…
the solution is called: yolo mouse. google it. it makes everything good except the mouse still disappears when you rotate the camera.
tried yolo mouse, can’t stand it.
however, i would like the option to be able to disable the in-game cursor so i can use my own cursor, i have one that is really easy to find yet is my style

While you keep looking for your cursor, I’ll be over here looking for my precursor
Right click ( a common way to turn your character and camera) hides the mouse. Wish we could disable that, personally.

I do this all the time, and I still don’t lose my cursor…even when in a zerg, I can see my ground targeting circles just fine by raising the camera up and looking down at the scene at a 40 – 50 degree angle…if I find that necessary, otherwise I just look for the red/green circle…zero issues with that.

Congrats? For the most part I can too, unless I’ve had my RMB down for a long time and It may take a short time longer to aim it. Regardless. I don’t see the point in arguing against a simple QOL change.

yeah losing the cursor at the wrong time is a very bad experience indeed… no solution for now apart from restarting the game.

Supporting this, can’t remember how many times I had the freakin cursor dissapear and had to shake the mouse to get it back on screen. Always happening with AoE ground targeting.
Maybe if you’ve got excellent vision or something but many of us don’t. Mouse sensitivity would only make the issue worse for many of us I think. Given that I can shake my mouse left and right and still not see the cursor sometimes in the cluster of a WvW fight. Can’t imagine how hard it would be if the mouse moved even faster.
I don’t actively pay attention to it but I think the mouse escapes into the nether when using certain camera functions and then reappears in the shadow realm when you go to try and use it for ground targetting.
Like everything else they add to the UI, they could make cursor visibility an option so those who like it as it is can still enjoy it. But there are many things they could do to change the cursor and make it more visible.
I feel like a color inverse cursor with a fairly thick outline would make a highly visible cursor. Much harder to lose a cursor that is literally the exact opposite of what it’s on top of.
To be fair, a lot of this is just intrinsic issues with mouse and keyboard. Keeping your cursor in check is sort of a skill you need to pick up.
It’s absolutely not intrinsic because other games solve it, and Windows itself can also solve it.
The problem here is that GW2’s cursor is pretty hard to see, by cursor standards (being a dull colour and not very bright), and largely non-animated.
I’ve been using mouse + keyboard since 1988, have excellent eyesight and reflexes, and GW2 still fairly often causes me to lose my cursor. Other games do or do not depending on their cursor. With WoW I use a mod and literally haven’t lost the cursor for several months since I installed it.
So yeah, whilst there is a small element of skill/experience, if you’ve been using a PC for gaming for more than 2-3 years, you have that. Anything after that is a design issue (barring obvious eyesight/reflexes problems – but as most humans have one or the others games need to design around them).
Maybe if you’ve got excellent vision or something but many of us don’t.
He may do, but so do, and I also have good reflexes and decades of experience, and GW2 still gives me this problem where other games do not, so it is a GW2 issue, contrary to what he says.
I truly thought it was just me! So happy to see this post LOL

I am always losing the cursor. I don’t have this trouble in DOTA 2, the cursor in that game is better. Will I get into trouble with Anet if I use yolo mouse in Guild Wars 2??

Sure thing. It is like cheating. The game must be difficult, a lot of players asked for that.
