Though, I hope it’s a GS or a rifle.

But no, there is nothing official on what the spec will be or which weapon it will get.

I find it funny how we had a chance to purchase a katana great sword, but a theif with the specialization of possibly being a ninja/samari and is closer to these types of classes, will never wield a katana like that lol

At least that’s what I thought I heard listening to the POI a few weeks back.

thief could fit the ninja role with a 1 handed Katana.

However they would not fit the Samuri role as Samuri wore very heavy armor (weighs like 65+ pounds in real life)

I’m personally hoping for a Sniper specialization. Thieves are the only class that can’t hit 1200 range. But if they got rifle you could give them the 1500 range and maybe make it so that they cant uses it within a certain distance (0-450/600). And their utilities and weapon skills could focus on putting distance between them and their target. Plus that would work great with their critical strikes trait line.

I think this would make other profession users cry again and get thief overnerfed again…

I would rather want to see some kind of mainhand/offhand weapon because it would give more diversity(more combo skills/possible builds)

Seeing as how it’s not part of the base thief profession, it couldn’t possibly get thieves nerfed. I’m hoping thieves get rifles too.

Thief has a lot of gap closer utility and with f1, signet to shadow step to target and shadow step itself used both to get away and get close to target. If rifle is the new weapon for thief it will be interesting to see how they rework thiefs traits, utilities and f1 skills to sync with a long range dps role for thief. If this is the amount of diversity we will get with professions I would love that. Besides I was personally inclined towards a GS fro thief as I really want to see my Belinda GS skin on my thief working like a ninja but oh well maybe in some near future.

I would prefer a melee weapon (preferrably OH sword/greatsword), but if it is rifle at least it should give us 1200+ range options. So long as we can still use the base profession weapon sets, which I imagine will be the case for the most part, I will be ok with rifle. I am predominantly an melee fighter, but providing I can have a melee weapon on the other set I’ll be happy.

Simplicity is complex.

That’s a good point you make.

The class F1-F4 skills for each class might be totally different for some or all of the specializations. Thief specialization won’t be a “thief” but something else, so it would make sense to change out steal for something else.

First a qualifying statement. ANet has made it clear that no new weapon classes will be introduced with specialization. So, “fists” for hand-to-hand and throwing knives/shurikens are out of the question.

Strictly from the standpoint of realism, I might see ninja as a possible thief specialization, but not samurai. Samurai seems like more of a warrior specialization involving heavy armor. Ninja on the other hand, with it’s focus on lighter armor and stealth seems more thief-like, although Ninjas did use polearms sometimes. However, making thieves even more stealthy than they already are might unbalance WvW and PvP. A lot of what thieves already do with stealth and shadow stepping seems based on ninja legends, so what is left if you go ahead and call them ninjas? Walk through walls? The art of disguise?

A sniper (with rifle) version of the thief might be cool. Maybe one that allows you to do more damage if you snipe from stealth. Or possibly a perma-stealth option if the sniper does not attack or move. Of course they removed a perma-stealth item from WvW already, so this might not be allowed.

The “commando” forest-oriented thief, similar to a sniper in some respects might be another option. I’m not sure I like the idea of a longbow thief. The range is nice, but rangers aren’t typically the class I want to emulate. “Why can’t I be more like a ranger?” is rarely heard in GW2. And if the thief gets the very best of the ranger stuff tacked onto a thief, rangers are going to be very upset.

A thief/warrior hybridization might be possible. I suppose this may be where the samurai idea comes from, or maybe it was an option in GW1 – I don’t know. It might focus on using blunt weapons like maces or hammers for stuns. A dagger mace combination might let you first stun your opponent, then stab them for bonus damage if you hit while they are stunned. Although it doesn’t stir my imagination like the ninja option, this and the sniper options seem the most realistic to me in terms of game play.

They could go for a specialization that makes a thief tankier, but we already have guardians and warriors in the game. If you want tanky melee, play one of those.

I’m thinking, given the theme of the expansion, it’ll be a Reaver, based on the Pale Reavers. They’re a group of rogue-like sylvari in the Pact and starting area who are apparently excellent snipers, fitting with the rifle idea.

Gotta think about what specializations add to the table first and foremost. This time around it looks like specializations will be giving professions major access to things they couldn’t previously do.

For example Necromancers getting Greatsword for that melee cleave that currently they can’t do so well.

Guardians wielding Longbows because they really don’t have a good long range damage focused weapon.

Engineers with Hammers because they currently have no great way to excel in melee combat.

Seems like Anet is trying to really give professions more choices in terms of being either a front-line, mid-line, or back-line combatant, so where a profession is lacking in one option, that seems to be what this round of specializations seems more focused on attaining.

With that in mind, rifle or longbow seems most fitting for thief currently. Since there’s some kind of hint in the trailer that a norn thief was wielding a rifle. Seems more likely that rifle will be the weapon of choice for thief’s specialization.

The problem I have with the rifle idea is zerker theifs like me are gonna get the “ranger LB mash2 to win” treatment. Nobody really complains about theifs any more and if we get a rifle, you know will figure out a way to crit at long range, then people will get mad, theif will get a nerf and so forth…I’d rather take a great sword and avoid this now…

How is a zerker greatsword any less rage inducing than a zerker rifle? People complain about thief all the time, and the anti zerker brigade will complain about any zerker weapon. It won’t matter one bit what weapon we get, someone will find something to complain about.

I’m not saying I don’t want a greatsword, I would actually prefer it over rifle, I just don’t think people’s complaints about zerker gear is reason enough to not have rifle.

Think about it….ones Melee and up close, the other is range. If the theif is given the ability to crit the same way their backstab does in stealth for example, you just gave a highly maneuverable class the opportunity to down another class at a long range without ever being touched.
If you were walking around in WvW and saw a theif in the distance go stealth and suddenly you’re downed, would you get mad? You had no chance to defend yourself like you could if they were going for a backstab.

and whos to say the rifle stealth skill is anything like daggers stealth skill? we already have a sword that dazes from behind, or blinds from frontal attack, shortbow just put immobilise on, pistol is a multiple shots skill that bleed so you can dodge the upcoming ones if you are fast, so yeah i see no reason the rifle stealth skill will be anything like a ranged backstab. heck maybe we will loose all stealth skills on weapons when we are specialised as they did say specialisations changes the mechanics of the classes too

I’m still hoping they go for more of a “Gunslinger” approach and give them rifle.

Replace Steal with a “Build Up” mechanic that ups the damage the longer you charge it, but you can’t move and are revealed while charging.

Picture a wild west shootout from a movie. Two thieves facing off against each other, both trying to build enough to end it in one shot, while also hoping that they can reach that point before their opponent does. Fire too soon, and you give them an advantage. Fire too late and… well, you’re dead.

There’s more than one way to be a gunslinger. There’s the old west way, and then there’s the “walk through the area, taking out targets as they appear” way. Rifle will work well for that.

The “hold and build” mechanic would also allow for a rifle user to do a long range, precise sniper-style shot as people are asking for, but at a risk.

There’s also the Musketeer way! For those who’ve watched the BBC America “Musketeers” series, they decided to use musket fire quite a bit. Aramis in particular is a crack shot. In the “making of” discussions they said that muskets would be a huge part of what a _Musket_eer did, and they envision their musketeers as the elite soldiers of the crown, the 17th century equivalent of Navy Seals.

Mmmm it would be lovely to be a dashing, swashbuckling Musketeer.

(PS the BBC-Am series is very well done, very immersive, lots of attention to set dressing to make you feel you’re watching a bustling early 17th c. Paris. The only Musketeers movie to ever satisfy me was the one with Michael York as D’Artagnan, as it paid attention to the source material and the costuming was meticulously researched. I was even able to sew the same doublet Athos wore in that movie when I played the King’s Musketeers LARP as him, and my source was Waugh’s Cut of Men’s Fashion (title might be off) and her diagram of an actual deconstructed period doublet from a museum. And I’m almost entirely satisfied with the current show. Season one is on DvD. Recommended!)
