Most of the topics I read here are saying how low expectations are for this release. People are so quick to bash a company that puts time and effort into giving us not only what we want, but doing so much of it for free. I’m not here to say that HoT will be huge in size, because just like all of you I have no freakin clue. I am here to start a thread of realistic views at what may come and to say thank you to Anet. I want to look back to all the times Anet has released something lasting and memorable. Too easy people forget the expansions for GW1 and the continuation of content for that player base. I also like to look back to getting Fractals, Super Adventure Box, and Southsun Cove. I really feel like the same people that say they are soooo disappointed will be squealing like girls the day of release and saying how the hype kept them hopeful. So Anet, thank you for giving me a good reason to play with people online!

They are not giving anything. They are selling it. This is not altruistic bussiness.

LS were free updates with gem store stuff attatched. Though its not forced to buy this bussiness model works.

And guess what, I dont like LS and I wouldnt pay a single penny for it. And I’m not grateful for it.

Anet is a bussiness company with clear goal to sell their product. They work with bussiness plan not with unicorns and pink thoughts about spreading love to ppl.

Whether or not you enjoy the free content does nothing to change the fact that they are trying to give you something. Of course they are a business with a plan to make money. This is obvious when you go on the gem store. When I play a game like Rift or Firefall it’s hard to get anywhere without spending actual money. So many of these other companies feel greedy. Not to mention Anet gives us content that most others would charge for besides Living Story. The overall quality of the game matched with the amount of free content makes me very grateful I play GW2.

As a non-MMO example: How many DLC’s are there for the Assassin’s Creed franchise? Or for Call of Duty?

That’s weird in my opinion. I pay for the product and I expect it to be good. Because I cant choose if I want the game patched after I bought it I expect their patches to be good long after I bought the box because they’re changing what I bought.

It’s your right to feel grateful, however in bussiness world at the end it’s only money that matters.

edit: I dont play those games. And with DLCs you have a choice to buy or not to buy them. With GW2 you have no choice if you want patches implemented to the original product you bought.

well
- yes, they do it for business
- still, customers can voice their appreciation and thanks for a product that satisfies them
- gamers are by far the worst customers in general, especially so in the mmorpg genre where it is never enough and never right, part of the game I guess, whiny, demanding, rash.

I hope I am wrong here, but you just seem like a self-righteous prude that only enjoys something when it fits perfectly into your ideals.

I gave them money for a good product. I’ve paid for bad games before but regret nothing. I paid for something and I didn’t like it, oh well. I love what Anet has given me so much that I even buy gems every once in a blue moon. *gasp

yes they’re a business company and the primary goal is making profit but they love their product and you can see it in the eyes of collin & co. they want to do it right and good (we all know that that resulted in failure sometimes e.g. NPE … but hay .. thats life … and they got screwed enough for every failure (even if sth isn’t released at all they got blamed for it)

Look at the Product they called GW2 before release and before they started to remake the whole thing. They could easily choose the way of … i could call 99% of the MMO market (espacially asian games) here…. just to milk the players and than kill the game afterwards but they choosed to aim for GW2 kitten named frenchise with good reputation which is more difficult i think . -> and yes thats even a marketing strategy to gain money blabla … but it’s definitively the harder one.

The OP is definitively right … ANet gets blamed for every kitten the whole time but its pretty seldom that someone makes a post just to thank them for several (thousands) hours of playtime.

I join in and say : Thank you ArenaNet

As I said, I dont deny you your right to say thank you to ppl who take money from you. I just dont understand it.

than you may just think about the fact that nobody gets hurt by a “thank you” and the Devs maybe deserve some honor – its nothing wrong to thank someone for doing its job well.

It’s your right to feel grateful, however in bussiness world at the end it’s only money that matters.

And that is EXACTLY the thing the capitalistic world will teach us …. nothing is worth anything, it just has a price … thats so sad

Yes. I can agree that after I have spent thousands of hours in a chair and taking in all that they have made, a thank you is in order. I’ve met friends online and reconnected with old ones. I spend time online with my fiance and we both feel like we are on a grand adventure together. I have good memories thanks to Anet which is more than I can say about some.

This kind of cynicism is just depressing.

Yes, ArenaNet is offering a product and the continued service of updates to that product. They expect you to pay for it – once. Give them your sixty bucks – or forty, or twenty, or whatever the next ridiculously low sale on the game is – and you’re good to go.

They then go out of their way to try and ensure that you have the best experience possible. Is that part of their competitive angle? Yes, of course it is. But that doesn’t mean that these aren’t passionate people putting their hearts and souls on the line to make this awesome thing they want to share with us.

Did they have to give us the option to convert gold to gems so we could play our way into what most games considered paid-only content? No – but they did.

Did they have to configure new playable updates, with new content and new things to do, every two weeks, that are completely free with your game purchase? No – but they did, and even if you didn’t like the Living Story you can’t deny that it was an exceptional thing for an MMO developer to do.

ArenaNet’s made mistakes, no doubt. Everybody does. But acting like they don’t have emotions or aspirations at all because they’re a business is just heartless. They like to eat, and to eat they need to get paid.

Why does that mean they’re evil bastiches out to ‘take money from us’?

What makes someone an “evil bastich” for trying to make money from a business?

There’s nothing evil about it. They do work with an attempt to please us, if we’re pleased we support them and give them money. Pretty simple concept.

Personally I’m a bit disgruntled because they’ve done very little (and this last patch really screwed up) in the area I love the most (Dungeons/Fractals).

If they want me to thank them and support them all they have to do is support that area of the game.

It’s not really complicated.

btw as for the gold→ Gems thing, it’s a great way to keep players who don’t feel the game is worth the cash, it keeps the game populated, which in turns keeps players around who are willing to dump real money into it. It’s actually a brilliant idea and I have no doubt that it’s helped the success of this game (and business).

Oh, is that what they were doing with the trait system redesign and NPE?

Like to make a note:
Living Story is not free content. It was only temporarily free. Anyone who missed it or the few hundred thousand people that purchased the game during the two most recent sales and stuck purchasing this content.

So since I don’t have several thousands hours of playtime on Guild Wars 2 I can bash Anet right? I’m just clarifying what you mean….ok I’m really just being a smart aleck.
