Why bother? Just make it a digital download. Let people download it slowly, bit-by-bit, over the course of a week or two, and then the servers won’t crash.

Save money, save time, save the planet.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

Some people like box copies. Especially people that get the physical collector’s edition. I don’t, but I understand why they like it. Basically, it won’t change from how it’s always been.

It takes two weeks to download a game? It took me less than an hour to download and install gw2.

In store release games get more press too. Dont you want your Gamestop exclusive Quaggan key chain?

I’m pretty sure they will be slowly trickling in the data into the updates leading up to HoT, just like you suggested. Heck, they’ve already started doing that to a limited degree. But they have to be somewhat sparse with doing so, because there are people who can look into the game data and release that information to the public. Its one thing for a few rough skills to come to light (which is what has happened up ‘till now) but something entirely different if the entire expansion were to be spoiled. So while they will be adding some stuff, they likely won’t be doing the entire expansion that way, there will be a chunk download at release.

Having a boxed version and adding data into updates aren’t mutually exclusive things.

Well for me, I’d rather buy a physical copy. My debit card is still linked to my Dad’s card, and although all the money on that card is money that I MADE, he doesn’t like me spending it on games. So i’d rather withdraw the cash, go to a store, and buy the physical copy. Also, I want the box. i dont have the original box, but I want to get the HoT box. Bet it’ll come with some neat stuff, like a little booklet or something xD

they put a lot less effort into packaging than they used to. I doubt anything except a collectors edition will have anything even slightly cool in it.

Going digital-only would be suicide. They need the attention and new players that a physical release will bring. A digital sale will only sell to people who are already playing.

Whether you like it or not, Anet has already stated that boxes will be coming:

Q: Will this expansion only be available digitally, or will there be a boxed edition as well?

A: Both. Once Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is available, you’ll be able to buy it digitally or get boxed editions at retail stores.
