This Beta Portal is a freaking sham....
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I’ve gone sick of farming. It is not fun. Tried switching maps (Dry Top, SW) but no luck. I’m not even interested in participating in beta anymore. Only regret is that I felt like I lost my time the entire weekend.
This seems to be the growing opinion. A lot of older players were drawn into farming SW and Dry Top only to come away feeling cheated out of their time.
Problem isn’t the beta portals, it’s the RNG system. It’s a total mystery and many believe that it’s a broken and cheating system. Magic find is increasingly becoming more and more useless with more things bypassing it entirely. It’s long rumored as well that long running accounts have a lower chance to get item drops then new accounts.
There is something fishy with the loot drop RNG system if you ask me.

Do you have any evidence that the RNG is rigged besides “I didn’t get a portal, and that guy got 2! RAAAAGE QQ!!!!1!1!”?
There’s a lot of foil-hatting going on here, even for a videogame forum.

His post was entirely non-ragey. There was absolutely no QQ. There was a bit of tinfoil-hatting, sure, but you’re really exaggerating what he said.
And given that portal drops were confirmed to not account for Magic Find, there’s a slightly valid complaint: players who built up high levels of Magic Find are losing out on their benefits.
This is part of a long-term move from drops (which MF affects) to bags/chests (which MF does not, except SW loot chests), so it’s not exactly new.

I got a portal, I’m not complaining I’m just saying a lot of people aren’t entirely sure what Magic Find even does. There is a lot inaccuracies in statistics that doesn’t measure out about loot drops in the high end tier of items. With the way things are moving to with silverwastes and drytop being nearly entirely chest drops and bag drops as primary sources which magic find doesn’t effect. I think something needs to be said by Arena Net as to what is Magic Find, whats it’s for and how it effects everything and their plan for the future regarding it.

Sorry, this is just the umpteenth thread of “I didn’t get a Beta Portal so surely the system is rigged QQ” that all I’ve answered. They kind of run together.

Actually I don’t think that would be a bad idea. Better yet, test servers. The “Beta” appears to be a thinly disguised load of hype to draw attention to the expansion.
And it appears to work in some cases.

That would be a terrible idea. Anet just doesn’t have the servers dedicated to the Beta to support that. Also, it’s a Beta, not a stress test.

Well, they are going to get input from a rather narrow section of the player base then.

I guess that depends on how you define “narrow.” Sure, it won’t be a large proportion of the player base, but as long as it’s representative of the overall player population (that has access to the Silverwastes and Dry Top and is motivated to participate in a Beta test), you can work with a smallish sample and draw strong conclusions. That’s survey sampling 101.
Are the results perfect? Of course not, but you can’t ask every voter who they would vote for either. You just have to randomly select a sample and draw your conclusions from there.

Trouble is people did not really looked at what MF does with a low drop rate to begin with.
For example, an item with a droprate of 0.001% drop without MF = 0.005% with 500% MF.
The increase in droprate is so small it’s almost not noticeable.

Thank you. You explained my definition of “narrow sample” very well.
Dry Top and Silver wastes just got lots of stress testing with all this hype towards trying to get access to stress testing the expansion.
I tried for four days in a row to get a portal. Instead I found an awesome Guild that I hope to have hundreds if not thousands of hours of fun with

I can appreciate how you’re trying to turn your rage-QQ into some good old fashioned concern trolling, I really can.
It just too bad that there is an entire branch of applied statistics that demonstrates how silly and short-sided your “concern,” which I am 100% completely sure is not in any way tied to you not getting a Beta Portal drop, actually is.

RNG in this game does seems little messed up.
One guy got 2 portals last night within a space of 20 minutes, I’ve been farming like 4 hours a day at least from day 1, still no portal.
But that’s RNG for ya…. :/
It’s very possible that Anet are using metrics to decide who has a higher chance to get drops based upon groups and subsets of groups that fall within certain criteria they wish to test for the beta.
For example :- A: 1000 players age 15-21, B: 1000 players age 22-30, C: 500 players age 31-40,
200 players age 41+
And how can they know their players’ ages?
“based upon groups and subsets of groups that fall within certain criteria they wish to test for the beta… For example:”
It’s an example… It’s not literally based on age demographics.
Examples aside, they ask you for your date of birth when signing up for the newsletter
I’ve noticed for the RNG tables in general beyond just portals a lot of players who don’t play for long periods of time tend to get better drops…
I’d like to see a proper formula attached to a loot table. (Akin to Ratemyserver for ragnarok) otherwise I’m going to believe in th growing conspiracy that: play less = good loot -> keeps new an flighty players playing. <- balanced out economy via the rest of the players who can possibly buy the good stuff form accumulated gold.
Guy plays all year: 1 random exotic drop per month… Guy comes back year later, after going back to WoW: precursor in a month… :/ (back when crafting was the fastest way to 80.) sells it maxes a toon they never played, only to leave 3 months later, only to come back again and get ANOTHER precursor…
That being said I have a portal and am against the current system.
To add to the list of drop options I’d love to see some PvP options. I’d say r80 but Prob a little to much of that now… But how about anyone who has held top 500 on LB for multiple months? or maybe a certain amount of QP from the old system?

Fake. I played more specifically in the weekend, but my playtime is quite limited.

There are a lot of people with entitlement issues.
There are a lot of people who confuse criticism of a design decision with entitlement issues.
You must have missed the threads where people announce how many AP points they have or the number of hours they have played before complaining that they haven’t gotten a portal drop.

Huh? I actually have no desire to get a “Beta Portal Drop.” I could care less.
Mostly just thinking a bigger and more representative sample would give better results.
But my background is in behavior analysis and marketing.

“I played 70 hours and didn’t get this drop” is a criticism of a drop rate. “I deserve this item because I spent $100 in the gem store” is an entitlement issue. Don’t know what else to say.
There’s some space to argue, for example… “I should get a beta portal, I have 17k AP and over 3000 hours in game.” That’s a little of both.
Overall, the best bet would be to avoid using tired namecalling like “entitlement issues” and stick to discussing the underlying issue.

I don’t understand why everyone’s getting their panties in such a bunch regarding the Beta. It’s a Beta test. It’s going to be access to a rather small section of the upcoming content and features in advance of the expansion going live in order to test for balancing issues, bugs and other erroneous problems.
Honestly, instead of stressing out or becoming incensed regarding who gets a portal or how many portals some people get or the fact that you may have not received one yet, just play the game. You may get lucky, you may not get lucky but you’re really not going to lose out on anything if you don’t.
I’m probably going to very briefly check out the Beta but not play much of it. Why? Well, because I just don’t see the point outside of testing. Everything in the Beta is subject to change and all progress on the Beta server(s) will be cleared before the expansion goes live.
There is literally no benefit gained by having access to the Beta.
