I am happy with it. Players that are fine with the mastery system just dont constantly post about it on the forums, like those that arent.

Sorry to hear it man. Not to sound like a prick but I’m a long time player….bugger if I’ll buy HoT any time soon. The core game is good enough for me atm, I’d rather avoid the expansion till they sort it out.

I am ok with it. This system juts like lvlng in other mmo, you farms xp and get your reward – elite spec. I dont see any problems. If you can get +10 lvl in new expansion of some ofther games, why you cant get 10 lvls in HoT?
I haven’t played GW2 in 2 years and I only got my first character to 80 literally the day before HOT was released. As a consequence, my gear is garbage and I don’t really remember how to play. However, i don’t understand OP’s quote about “5 hours” to unlock first mastery. I was able to unlock it after 40 minutes or so.
I’m cool with it, sorry SP
I overlooked this thread as I was searching for information on a problem I have and I just stopped by to answer

I am actually very proud to bought the expansion and you are right, people who are happy about it do not usually post about it meaning you get to see more crying here.
The time is it taking me to unlock a mastery for the gated story is beyond a joke… I bought HoT to finally play a good story in GW2, and I am stopped little over an hour in for another mastery to unlock. I played 12 hours yesterday and barely scratched the surface on that poison IV mastery. The experience gain is tiny, and honestly as others have said, I have been quickly ‘put off’ from playing the game. I don’t care about the hero points needed, that’s something that is meant to take time. But grinding to play the main STORYLINE? I have never heard of this, I did not expect this, and I am NOT enjoying this.
I looked into receiving a refund for HoT to find that Anet staff only offer it upon complete de-activation of your account (until you buy the game again)………………………………………..
No wonder they wanted everyone to pre-purchase so badly…
I thought this game was supposed to be ready? I don’t consider this to be ready. You didn’t think people would get bored of grinding monotonous world map events? You should have known.
Perhaps this will finally be the nail in the coffin media-wise for Anet – perhaps you can start listening and focusing on what your player base wants, instead of trying to make big news stories about great player-staff communcation, when in actuality it has been dire from the very beginning. (We all know the original GW2 story was completely unfinished and underworked). I’m almost sick and tired of hearing the same thing.
It’s seriously taking people that long to unlock masteries? Seriously? Wow, I must have missed something. I also don’t understand why people are surprised about aspects of the story being gated behind mastries. The first round of the story was gated behind leveling. Mastries are a way of progression past leveling. Why shouldn’t the story be gated behind them?

Have you seen how much exp is required for IV… Yes it takes that long.
Because usually, aspects that are vital will be part of the story anyway. The very start for the glider was an alright introduction to masteries ( I know of loads of players who didn’t know to level up initially in order to master an ability ).
A lot of people don’t care for this meta-chain-farming in order to do something they actually want to play, that’s why it shouldn’t be gated.
i’m more sympathetic to complaints about the spec unlocks now that i’ve played it
the grind is acceptable for a main character but doing it more than once is going to be brutal, especially since your only practical choice is to do Maguuma challenges.
straightforwardly it is overcosted. It should cost way less hero points and Maguuma challenges should not give 10. it should be like 200-250 points tops and Maguuma challenges give 5.
Got home from work excited to try out the new expansion and unlock daredevil on my thief. Didnt realize the huge grind it would take just to experince the new classes. Spent about 5 hours in the jungle got 1 mastery point to unlock the glider. I like the glider its fun. Decided to roam around and collect hero points to atleast unlock the first thing for daredevil so i could have fun killing stuff with the staff before i continued the main quest line. Long story short, it didnt happen. Now im left feeling unstatsified and frankly have no desire to play the game anymore. The mastery system is fine, it’s okay that it’s a grind. But locking the elite specs behind such a huge wall is the deal breaker for me. I wanna do the new story, and maps enjoying/playing with and customizing the new class. Not spend hours upon hours unlocking it. I really wish i had not bought this expansion, the buyer remorse is very real for me right now.
After 5 hours I had to take a break from HoT. Was too frustrating.
Came back, managed to get my mastery rank up to 4 so I could actually do stuff, unlocked enough of Chronomancer to make it usable.
Now Gw2 is fun again.
I know its annoying but preserve OP it does get better.
People nowadays want to get lots of stuff as soon as possible, hours after something is out.
What are you ? Elitists ? Yesterday I also came back from work and when I died many times like a lil’beach trying to get to some points or achieve them and when I finally did even though it wasn’t that much, in the end of the day I felt satisfied because I did a dangity dang good job to handle some stuff on my own instead of rolling with a mindless cluster of players to easily get stuff in a bunch of hours.
Most MMORPG’s now are easy to acquire certain things, take your time and enjoy the xpack while grinding the crap out of it. It’s a challange dang it !
I think RPG’s are meant to be played for a long time to slowly but with great quality, experience the content and to immerse with our characters instead of bull rushing through everything to later boast about how much hours in a row you spent to achieve a bunch of rare pixels
(edited by Rodzynald.5897)
I guess it is around 400 hours per elite spec you want to fully unlock. So basically most of us will only ever have 1 elite spec probably our main characters
In all fairness i like the masteries, i wish the Tyria masteries were easier to level like the Maguuma.

All I see on these forums is people complaining they can’t complete the whole expansion in a day…. I love the fact that I am going to have something to work towards in this game and that it’s not just going to be handed to me #silverspoon #nothappythenleave
Very hard to be sympathetic went you’ve spent time telling people not to prepurchase, people could wait and see and not throw away their consumer power and money.

Except it’s not at all like grinding 10 levels in another MMO.
10 levels in any modern MMO takes like a day-ish. A week for casual players.
Experienced people (over 1500 hours on this game) playing this one for 5 hours got 1 kitten mastery point for their glider, let alone any hero points. The quests are nothing new (stand next to this NPC and hit stuff, WOO). The content is kitten. Even the glider (copied from another MMO) is kitten. It’s good for GW2; that doesn’t mean it’s good compared to other games. AND you have to upgrade it, so it’s REALLY crap before that.
Not only that, you have to grind hundreds of hero points. If you don’t like PvE, and choose to just level up more for your hero points in WvW, that’s over 200 levels for most people, just because they don’t want to do MORE kittenty PvE content (hooray; guard yet another NPC!) on a kittenty glider you have to upgrade (again, not as good as other games, and not enough to drag me away from WvW).
In essence, they just told about half their player base to eff off and go earn 200 levels (per character!), or go do the thing they hate most on the game for days and days….not just on one character, but multiple characters.

Ok so what are people saying? Please clarify. Cause I’ll state again. All I see are people saying they can’t “have” everything at launch. But your right. I think we should have every map uncovered and every skill unlocked and every way point at launch. Totally agree. Let’s just get everything at launch right away!

I have to agree.
At first I also got a little bit discouraged that it was hard to get that glider at first but then I realised that we were all playing a convenient game that can be done in a few hours of quick grind. Now when we get some hard stuff hit right at our face, people do not want to adjust to long grind but cry and instead of pulling their crap together and grind that content, they waste their time on forums. It’s like WoW community all over again when they QQ’ed about hard PvE and now they just roll their faces through hardest levels of dungeons and raids. When I played Lineage II there was a quest for 3th tier of your class. As I remember it was a hugeeee gring fest to kill hundreds of mobs, I remember nothing of players complaining about that, they just simply rolled with it and only those who were the most unyielding, got what they deserved.
I consider myself decent, I do not approve of long boring grind, but if this is what I have to do to get my well deserved fun, then I’ll stand up to the challange and grab that HoT content by its horns and ride it to the top !
P.S.
Grinding even if it seems boring, is one of the cruicial aspects of MMORGP genre.
If you can’t handle a good old fashioned grind, then go play some soft core mmorpg’s
Go on, pour that sweet critique of yours on me but remember, make it worth your time, because you could actually spend it playing the game.

well, theyre doing it wrong. you can get another mastery point just by following the easy peasy ‘go here and talk to peeps’ finish up of the first mission, and there’s one that is an easy glide from the first waypoint. another one that is a slightly harder glide from the first waypoint. lots of hero points around that are reasonably accessible too.
so im guessing with those stats that they were churning through the meta events and ignoring the other stuff shrug

Just wanted to comment on this point. What about daring to be different and move away from grinding altogether? You may find it fun but it’s the main reason I steered clear of grindfests. Probably other folk feel the same

5 hours to unlock a Mastery tier? How is that even possible? In 5 hours I had unlocked almost 3, with points to spare for several more ahead (and 29 points for Tyrian masteries due to prior map completion). The only reason it took me so long for even that, was that I was jumping all over the game testing some of the new stuff, including guild hall preparations and Halloween favourites.
…And I’m a filthy casual roleplayer.
Perhaps the only RP-oriented guild on the server

This is why I freaked out way before release when Anet said there’s no story progression for revenant, and knew something was deeply amiss. Why would they add new things to the game without making it entertaining to acquire?
Seems that was the tip of the iceburg to the grind problems though.
At least I saw through what was happening and skipped it, but I’m sad a lot of people lost $50 and weren’t interested in grind.

im happy with it.
I cried and cried and cried before launch when I found out it would be a grind. It took me all day to unlock my chronomancer, but now that I see where the hero points are and which dont need masteries, it took me 1 hour to unlock reaper.
