Here’s the thing, though: the Warrior’s rifle sucks. Hard.
People who wanted a rifle Thief elite spec were pretty much hoping and praying that it would be the one and only class in the game that used the rifle LIKE A RIFLE (a.k.a. not the Engineer, which uses it as a weird, unintuitive and largely pointless gadgetstick not entirely unlike a techno-staff) and in a way which WASN’T WORTHLESS (a.k.a. not the Warrior’s low-damage, low-impact, null-utility, completely traitless junk-gun).
You can sass people who wanted a rifle all you like, but fans of rifles/the predator literally have nowhere to go if they want a powerful rifle build. Staff guys?
Elementalist’s staff is its best option outside PvP. Necrostaff is usable utility. Mesmer staff is quirky, but still has support and a playstyle it can use. Guardstaff is admittedly weak, but no weaker than Engineer or Warrior rifle. As for this ‘Daredevil’ and the Druid, we don’t know – but the point remains.
Don’t sass folks who were hoping for rifle. There’s just as many Good Reasons for it as there are for the staff guys.

They’re not going to give people Initiative-spammable knocks on staff.
how would that be any different than the spammable block on spear that thieves already have?
to be honest, people forget how intitiative works. yes, we can spam certain abilities, but that ends up leaving us with all our weapon skills effectively on cooldown.
Both staff and rifle could have worked for the thief. The problem is that you are never going to get a commando/army feel out of the warrior as all their heavy armor looks like bulky metal. Likewise, you can’t pull off a cowboy look with the warrior. Warriors also don’t use pistols. Therefore, it is unlikely I will switch to the warrior for a gunslinger or commando or cowboy feel. Thief had potential to do this if they got rifle and some traits. Right now I run pistol pistol/pistol pistol on my thief because its the only thing I can find to match this vibe. Needless to say, its a little lacking. From the video posted, it seems like berserkers are more going to be rampaging in with a shotgun. Likewise, the engineer feels like a mad scientist. The rifle feels like a “gizmo” rather than an actual gun. I just want a ranger or guns rather than bows. Don’t care what class I have to level to get it.

And it was so broken that they ended up removing water from PvP entirely because they couldn’t get it balanced. talk about extreme… It was fun playing that map on my thief though… oh you want to kill me… too bad i’m in the water and can block all your attacks while also killing you… Actually, reminds me of guards in PvP right now…

Thats on the berserker. How about the non-berserker warrior? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying rifle sucks, its just you don’t see it played much.
Sigh.
If this is indeed the staff it looks like… So much for the comment of ‘no two professions will be getting the same new weapons’.

Could be remembering it incorrectly, but I could have sworn this was said when the specializations were first being mentioned to the public.
Still. Makes the thief and ranger specializations feel less, well, special.

News at six : the two specialisations of the Thief and the Ranger that we objectively still don’t know about their talents, utilities, weapon skills, traits and new mechanics are less special cause their new weapon can use the same 3D model!
Or not really. At the minimum, wait for the Druid reveal please.
Sigh.

Both mesmer and revvenant elite specs got shield and they function so incredbly different. It’s really about what it does and not how it looks.

As stated: the Primal Burst skill, by itself, does not change the fact that the Rifle’s AA is worthless, Aimed Shot is a nil-damage attack with low Cripple uptime, Volley is less than half of what Rapid Fire is, Brutal Shot’s a low-damage attack with good uptime but bad stack count of Vulnerability, Rifle Butt deals damage but only comes into play if you’ve already failed at your job, and Killshot is a burst skill and thus can’t be counted on as anything but an infrequent damage spike.
The weapon as a whole does nothing but deal damage – no utility, no tactical value, no interesting tricks or combos. It’s also bad at dealing damage - the AA is junk which means its pressure is nonexistent, and its big-damage Volley skill was worse than Rapid Fire before ArenaNet fed Rapid Fire some dragon’s blood. Its supporting ‘utility’ skills are weak, and the one and only trait in the game which supports rifle gives it the equally weak pierce ability and the bog-standard 20% cooldown.
Yes, Gun Flame looks boss. If you’re a Wuv guy fighting zergs and you’re willing to give up Warrior’s Sprint. Everywhere else, it’s a single-hit attack that deals some fragmentation damage. It does not mitigate the fact that the Warrior’s rifle, which should be a straightforward, lethal soldier’s marksman weapon, is a low-damage, low-impact weapon with no utility.
If they ever want to fix that? Sure, that’d be awesome! But until then, the Warrior’s rifle is almost as bad as the Thief’s P/P set, and neither the Berserker nor this Daredevil/Enforcer are changing either of those.
Hope y’all like swinging your staff. Because it’s clear nobody in this game except Rangers gets to have distance combat kits worth smack. BLEGH.
Well I don’t care for distance combat anyway so yeah, I’m happy we get a melee weapon :o
Long distance combat is only good for WvW zerg skilless fights anyway.
kitten sorry guys, I know you all wanted warhorn…
Looks really good to say the truth. This pretty much confirms that one of the new legendary will be a staff.
I think people are missing the biggest clue: the term “distracting”. Implies a new form of CC or some other new form of subterfuge.
Or it could be linked to http://i.imgur.com/NWy34jF.png http://i.imgur.com/ZROT83I.png
i didn’t say thieves aren’t assassins, or can’t be. What I said was that the thief is a burglar/highwayman/etc., and the stealing mechanic matches that. An assassin could as easily be eastern styled ninja, as it could be a western sniper assassin. Mechanics for the class aside, the idea has merit.
Well, my thief Heltzer lady lived many years with the Brisban Bandits and was trained by them. Which means: mob actions, working with blade weapons, fireguns and even explosives! Since leaving the bandits, she pursues her own vendetta against her posh family in DR, which makes her to a rather stealthy, plotting killer. Turning into a martial arts fighter comes a little unexpected, but could be an interesting turn, cause of her Canthan origin. :-)
Add: … this is how I imagined my thief lady – before the announcement … 8-)
Tank Girl: Booga, that was very smart.

First you say I can Sass how much I want, and then you say I am not allowed to sass. Mmmhmm… Well thats how I speak and I may have a demoralizing way of putting things but it is not with purpose I just don’t try to be that way. Atleast I am not offencive.
Also I didn’t Sass becouse someone supported Rifle, I was a little rude becouse someone said Warriors are no snipers while in my opinion they are the closest to sniper as they have a snipe skill though it is not named Snipe.
And talking about being rude, thank you for Quoting my post as a ‘bunch of hooey’.
Eh? Why does it matter that Warriors Rifle sucks? It still is the class who has rifle and can snipe why should Thief have it too and also it seems you want it to be better that Warriors Rifle too, why? Why not tell Anet that you want Rifle to be alittle more useable for warriors?
I also said in my post that I only state my opinion and others are allowed to have theirs though I still stand to my opinion that Rifle does not fit well as a Stealthy, Silent and Aguile class. I can’t in any way figure out what skills a Thief would have with a rifle that doesn’t allready exists.
But with a staff on the other hand when it is used like a whole different way than the casters. The staff is almost like a new weapon just like with Revenant. I am also interested in seeing what will happen to Steal or what will happen at all.
(And to another poster out there, I don’t know if it was directed at me though but no Bo staff is not an Assasin weapon it is an Martial Arts weapon but it is a light long range weapon that is realy quick and realy fits the most quick and Aguile class in the game. Have you played as a Bo wielder in Soul Calibur?)
So in short, I write that I disagree with some people in this case becouse they tell Anet they did a poor choice for theif. I do that becouse I, just like everyone else has the right to show what I think of this.

From the datamine, I was slightly amused that a net used the 5 point palm exploding heart technique from Kill Bill (which in turn was from old Chinese martial arts sagas) for a skill

which is honestly horrible for martial staff users. Martial staff should really have been a new weapon type.
So…………. ranger gets a staff, thief gets a staff….

Anet never stated that we wouldn’t see duplicates across the elites, regarding which weapon they would get. I, and several others, speculated on it based on what had been seen (and as such, what other classes could get) up until we got the Glint spec, which gave as a second elite spec with shield. Thus blowing our speculation right out of the water.
The primary support for rifle thief came from the initial announcement trailer, in which we saw a medium armor class wielding a rifle. Some of us did caution that it could have simply been a normal engineer wielding a rifle, but we were shouted down because we did see some of the elites teased there (such as mesmer shield).
Hopefully Thieves can do pole-vault kicks too! You know, use the staff to propel themselves at the enemy (Have you played Heretic II, it’s a 3rd person shooter with quite elaborate melee with a glaive which was originally just a staff but has blade affixed on the other end as improvement. The character can do jumping attacks with the staff) (dunno what’s the actual name for it, sorry if using wrong words)
Perhaps allow thieves to use higher jumps via specific skills requiring the staff.
But I dunno, since I can’t fathom what imbalances it could make for PvP.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

Arrrgh! We’ve had Wednesday article reveals on other Elites, thanks to ZAM and Massively OP. I don’t know how to find them, though — I’ve been googling various things.
Now, it’s not even 9 am west coast time yet so maybe something will show up. And certainly we should get a blog tomorrow. But if anyone finds an in-depth article like we got on Tempest and Berserker, I hope you’ll link it asap

I’ve been waiting for the article today as well, but not seen anything as yet.

no need for the article, dulfy has all the skills, traits, and utilities posted on her site already (they were datamined in yesterday’s patch)
I have seen those! Not the same as getting screenshots of effects and dev commentary on profession mechanisms. Heck, those articles usually hold more than the blogs.
I’m just so excited for the Thief reveal that my normal phlegmatic patience on these things is less effective than usual.
Sad staff is confirmed. But after the Tempest disssapointment it was easy to spect Anet giving Thief yet another melee style. I hope is actually a good one, truly different from the actual base, and not only a new set of gimmicks to do exactly the same…
Wich could be the name of this new Elite Spec?
The Ninja? The Distractor? The Dragon Poker?
Anyone else find this funny ?
Let’s play the counting game !
Short Bow + Pistols = 2 Ranged (whether or not you like them or think they function well is irrelevant)
Sword + Dagger = 2 Melee
So basic math shows us that currently Thieves have 2 ranged and 2 melee. How is this Yet another Melee Style, if they gave you Rifle wouldn’t it be Yet another Ranged Style ?
It makes sense that Thieves would have more Melee than Ranged.
Sigh.

It was said by players who were in denial and used it as an argument to have a temper tantrum about what they felt a class should get, many of us have been saying Anet has NEVER stated this for months now.
But we haven’t seen how the class’s core mechanic changes yet, have we?
Well according to the stuff on Dulfy’s site it seems to be Melee (not magical ranged) and the core mechanic appears to be more or less the same, Steal is still there and iniciative based traits/utilities.

But up until now every class has had some kind of change to their core mechanics.
Chronomancer: f5 shatter
Dragonhunter: change to virtues
Reaper: shroud form changed
Revenant: skill outside of legend/weapon swapping
Berserker: berserk mode changing adrenaline
Tempest: overloading attunement
So what changes with thief? Stealing? Initiative? And how?
No one except Anet knows, any info we have, whether from Anet or Dulfy doesn’t specify that I have seen. So it’s either wait and see, or there is no change.

Kinda what I was getting at. Seeing various posts made me think that people are making judgement calls without seeing everything.
But since I wasn’t 100% sure though if I have missed something so I phrased my statement as a question.
We definitely need more rifles in the game. Not saying thiefstaff will be bad: we need to see it first. But IMO is not going to be as atractive or new as the rifle could have been.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

See my take on it is, many (not all) thieves wanted to be a thief and a sniper, they wanted god mode (maybe some didn’t realize this is what they were asking for), it just wasn’t good for the game to give a thief 1200 range with high damage without completely revamping the class to bring it in line.
Some people still don’t seem to grasp what giving them a rifle without overhauling the class would do to balance. You could say, “well just lower the damage of rifle” but then you would have the ones wanting god mode complaining because the Thief is suppose to be this burst god and their rifle doesn’t do the burst they want it to.
Some players realize what 1200 rng would mean for a thief and had plenty of good suggestions but whether good or bad those suggestions would be overwhelmed by QQ about the low Damage needed for thieves not to achieve god mode.
Yep, too many want to be easy mode thief players out there wanting to snipe in stealth 1200 feet away

Agreed. There is always a group of people that only want to have the overpowered hand. IMO rifle could have been done without falling on this: high damage, ranged weapon that hampers your movement and put your stealth on a really long cooldown. This could have been interesting, new to the game and the proff, and not so hard to balance.
BUT. Its all water under the bridge now. Lets just hope the thiefstaff is original and fun.

Despite what ‘everyone’ wants, I for one was perfectly content for Thief rifle to come with zero weapon stealth and be built as a pressure weapon rather than a superburst sniper stick. Some of my own conceptualizations for rifle actually ran along the lines of the datamined Pulmonary Impact – very low-damage attacks which stacked delayed-hit payoffs that allowed players in PvP to try and work around the issue. Picture something a bit like Halo’s Needler – you’d have to hit the enemy multiple times in order for your primary payoff to trigger.
That would have been interesting. The datamined Daredevil staff is, as I’ve suspected ever since the subject came up, pretty much just a pale not-replacement for Sword/*, with one extra mobility skill that, in my mind, doesn’t even remotely make up for the loss of /D or /P.
Oh well. The rest of the spec looks like it could be a lot of fun – I’ll just be using it with my typical S/P and not its native staff.

It’s just from the viewers mind. As I said before, I can’t come up with any good reasons for thief to have a rifle but I can realy see alot of skills being usefull with the Staff. This is due to I have immagined Thief with a staff and can immagine a whole new playstyle with that but on the other hand a Rifle for Thief in my point of view is totaly bizzare so I can’t come up with any good playstyle with Rifle for thief. It’s like my mind just don’t want to see it becouse I don’t like the idea. Sadly very few has given us what would be a good playstyle with rifle accept for this sniper, you though actually gave a good skill for it and I hope for your sake that this could be the Second Elite specialization for thief in the future.
Guild Leader of Alpha Sgc [ASGC]
If info about Thief’s new weapon on Dulfy’s site is correct, staff skills are just a mash of other Thief’s weapon skills. I can see use for 3, 4 and 5, but there’s nothing really new about any staff skill. There is no new playstyle or some other big change.
Utility skills do bring a new “pulmonary impact” and I am interested how that will work, but that’s only one skill and added to that there is a strong feeling this game is going in the same direction as some other Korean games where kiddies get to be like Chuck Norris and use brass knuckles or similar. I hope I am wrong.
