About 10g an hour for farming in GW2 (old numbers yes, dungeons/SW… maybe more now that HoT released) +over the long term when you count exotics and good drops and such. ) Less if you aren’t doing things efficiently but 10g is easy for math

Minimum wage is about 7.25 bucks (US)

So to unlock a specialization:

One char with 100% world completion i.e. already had 200+ pts (we are getting the fastest numbers at about 18hours)
you need:
180g or $130.50 USD

so for alts or new players: (we can easily surmise we 2x that since they wouldn’t have the 200+ pts) i.e. 400 needed
360g or $261 USD

Now let’s say you have 9 alts or one of each class (even though I personally have more)
And we’ll go ahead and assume your main has world completion but your alts don’t
180g x (8)360g = 3,060g
or 130.50 + (8)261 = $2,218.50 USD

  • PS edit: 18h assumption is not completed just completed enough to play the elite spec power wise (i.e. not the full pts, doesn’t have it maxed yet. So for the OCD folk…MGHMOYS)

When i see these numbers i know some people with deep pockets would actually prefer to pay that amount than grind the 400 points.

Anet plan is working perfectly…

At this point, I’m of the opinion that I’m done with the expansion. Unless they offer a cash shop shortcut to unlock the elites, I’m just not going to bother with GW2 and will advise people away from trying the game.

My advice to people that ask if the expansion is worth it is that they better enjoy map completion, and not getting to play the new classes unless they can do that without rage quitting, else it just aint worth the $50.00. Luckily Halo 5 comes out soon enough, so I can play that while the devs get this fixed.

Good post I like it.

It should be noted that mastery unlocks are account bound, so the second set of numbers is really way too high. I’m guessing it’d take 2 or 3 hours per alt.

You know there was somewhere i read that the more time in game equated to the more money spent on gems. Interesting indeed.

What on Earth are you on about? You haven’t even presented any form of argument.

Are you suggesting the expansion is a failure because you have to play it for more than a couple weeks to get something you want from it? How dare ANet give you a reason to keep coming back!

They’re not joking around when they say “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” If you can’t appreciate that philosophy, then you’re on a completely different page than ANet is. Think about it… why are you even playing the game? The stuff you get doesn’t matter at all. The entire objective is diversion, and that’s what you have been given.

Personally I have a LOT of alts, and getting them all specs is seriously next to impossible even best case scenario. I doubt it’ll ever be as quick as 2 or 3 hours (for 40 hero challenges?! much of which requires a group.)

People don’t care about that – they just want to play the new specs now. What don’t you understand about this?

You are absolutely correct….
If we work for real world money rather than play GW2 we will have more real world money.
If we farm gold ingame rather than farm hero points we will have more gold than hero points.

Just what… What is going on in these forums? Post after post after post complaining that players have to… gasp, play the game to progress!

Why on Earth would you want to short-cut the game to get to “the good stuff”? Do you think you will be happy if you get everything right now this minute immediately kitten it 10 seconds ago? I’ve got news for you buddy, if you’re playing games just to get The Next Cool Thing then perhaps games are not for you…

3 years of having things handed on a silver platter causes this.

At this point the comforting blanket is torn off.

I consider myself somewhat of a decent gamer, and the anticipation to play and grow my characters and my account tomorrow with what the expansion has provided…has been nothing but a blessing.

Why on Earth would you want to short-cut the game to get to “the good stuff”?

It’s just another classic example of the millenial mindset, I don’t usually say that word, but this here is just way too good to pass.
So the new stuff came out yesterday, we must have the new stuff now, no matter what, NOTHING can keep us from getting it RIGHT NOW, not tomorrow, not after playing, pretty much anything that’s not-now is wrong.

If Legend of Zelda came out tomorrow, the usual
forum dwellers would go nuts about the need to
“grind” to get exp, new swords, new potions etc

What are you trying to tell us with these numbers? Is this just the equivalent amount of money for the time spent unlocking the elite spec?

I hate to break it to you but there are other modes in GW2 other than PvE. I want to play the new specializations in WvWvW and run around and fight players as I’ve been doing for years, you can have the needlessly convoluted jungle excursions all to yourself.

Op, I apologize for being snarky, I was tired after spending all day playing and could not restrain myself. You are entitled to your opinion and have the right to share your opinion.

However, your argument is irrelevant and the ‘data’ you use to support it is grossly exaggerated.

Map completion includes completing all hearts, vistas, pois, and hero points. Obviously, the time it takes to complete hero points is the only number relevant to a discussion of farming hero points. Rather than using 18 hours (a very short time for map completion), I would suggest 2-4 hours to collect all hero points in Tyria. If your main character or any of your existing alts already have any hero points from Tyria that number will be lower. I don’t know how long it will take to collect 20 hero points in HoT, but let’s assume another 2-4 hours.

Starting with a brand new character it would take between 4-8 hours to collect enough hero points to unlock every trait line. Those numbers are only for PvE.

edit: In your opening post you also state we can easily assume doubling the time for map completion. However, characters can not do map completion twice.
