To me this could be too little too late. Its substantial content compared to the good but still minimal LS content but it seems more like an Eye of the North size of expansion rather than Factions or Nightfall and there are too many more b2p or f2p games out there now.
This is from my point of view but I don’t think I’m the only mmorpg player who thinks this way. The reason I think like this is basically I do not like repetition and GW2 seems built especially for this. It does it well though but I do like substantial new stuf to see and do and that is what has caused me to move between mmo’s. The thing is when I leave most games for a long period, even ftp, I dont really get back into them.
Guildwars was my first MMORPG type then Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars the Old Republic before GW2. After 3 and a half years or so with GW after the big new campaigns and Eye of the North behind, my friends had moved on, guilds I had been in disbanded or went in different directions for my liking. No substantial content was coming and I felt like I had played it out.
People said it was f2p so I could go back but though I tried I couldn’t get into the old groove again. I moved to DDO, also ftp with subs and b2p content but after a while it grew too samey to me and to be honest I wasnt willing to pay to play new content and I didnt want to pay the sub anymore to get all access. So I moved on.
I left LOTR as I never really did find a good guild there and content seemed to be getting too hard, I foud myself playing solo and again I wasnt willing to pay for anything if I couldnt have a helpful guild unit.
SWTOR was great but guild faded away and GW2 came out where many of us decided to move on too. But even after moving we had fun for a while but lots of the guys burned through the content and left after just over year, disliking the LS. I found another great guild which is mainly why I have stayed around so long but found content to be too repetitive and to lesser extent too competitive with mini games built around competitive activity and the SAB getting way too hard for me.
But even after all this and after buying a rival game I still paid for a new character slot and rolled a Mesmer for this weekend but man after lots of fun it grew old again.
I just want to explore, do new stories, dungeons, evolve my characters through new material, not repeating zones. SO now this new expansion is announced but another AAA game is about to go B2P. This “newish” game is so cheap to buy right now and evolving very fast from a bad start to something pretty spectacular I believe and that is something that I want to experience and its new and substantial.
Anet you need to try harder for people like me but there may be plenty of people going around to keep a community like Guildwars still has and maybe that’s all that matters to you. I’m moving on to something that is really growing and unless this new expansion has so much much more than the impression I have of it (or if the new game doesn’t work) then I wont be back.
Is there more material coming than we expect so far? For the first time I have a guild that has grown and still very active in game even as I leave so I could still find my way back? Anyway I’m still around just messing with my Mes but I will be moving soon. No point buying a game and not playing it.

Is it not a bit early to complain about there being too little when the only thing we have heard is an announcement?
We have no idea what these new group challenges are.
We have no idea how many or how big the maps will be.
We have no idea how the Guild Hall system will work.
We have no idea about [insert anything announced] will work.
Wait until we actually have information before complaining about it being too little.
The major features have been announced. The details may and will make quite the difference in how deep it goes.

Im not sure how deep it will go but Im not sure if its complaining about the new expansion so much as complaining about the whole game in general and saying the expansion doesn’t seem like enough especially in regards to how Anet overhyped the size of the last Living Story in my opinion. And its still months and months away probably with probably hardly anything new until then. It may be too little too late because there is much more in the mmorpg world happening.

Most of the titles in the ‘’MMORPG world’’ are failing and just the last year, we saw disaster-releases from Archeage to Wildstar and ESO. And while ESO for example improved on their gameplay, it is hardly at the same quality of what we got with GW2 at release.
So, the point is that let’s not live in the illusion that MMO industry is a paradise because it is not and most titles are having a rough time. Doesn’t mean there are no good games though.
On the other hand, Anet seems to be directing the game to a new direction with the new expansion and the last LS is a huge improvement over Season 1. Anet is listening to, at least, some of the feedback and while the future may not be great for everyone. It seems more bright with their new vision with bigger releases and perhaps more traditional but polished expansion-experiences.
I don’t think the rival games in general are doing much worse. GW2 has been written off many a times itself. I am particularly impressed about the turnaround on one particular game.

GW2 have actually never been written off. Sure people have shouted about the game dying, but that have never been factually correct. The game have been doing well since release.

Go play ESO instead of threatining Anet then. You will do yourself and the others a favor by not wasting their time neither yours as you can surely enjoy other games better.

Well to be fair Anet has gone out on a limb and done more experimental stuff with their game than any other company.
And part of the price of that for everyone is they don’t always deliver what they were expecting, and they probably thought LS for instance would be able to impress more than it did and fill more gameplay itch for people than it did.
However there’s still not really competition for this type of MMO. In fact the other competition in MMOs is not very creative at all at this point. So they still have several years to really find GW2’s strongest gameplay and more consistent model, and maybe they will.

too competitive with mini games built around competitive activity and the SAB getting way too hard for me.
NOOB AND A FILTHY CASUAL!!!
jk xD
But seriously tho, that’s like every mmo ever… of all time… There is going to come a time when you reach the end of the content and you are either waiting or doing other activities that you as an individual care about. Personally I love the combat system, so balance issues aside I have a TON of fun in PvP, GW2 flows much better than any MMO…
(That being said I also believe end game in any MMO is PvP, since once the content is done and you have all your gear all that’s left is to go PK >=D)
The intention of the living story and expansions IS to keep the players playing… But as per your example why play an expansion as opposed another bop game? Well engine bias aside… it’s still your character that you are expanding on, and as long as you have forged relationships in one world there is no need to leave it for another? At the very least, wouldn’t expanding on what you already have and burning out be better than throwing yourself into somewhere new having to start from scratch, and perhaps even risking an inferior experience only to burn out again?
What works best for me personally is always to monogame my main MMOs, but then dip into single player games for different experiences, like dragon age or skyrim. Then using other types of competitive games like SC2 or any MOBA to keep things fresh. But intentionally staying away from things like Tera, Wildstar, and Rift. (although I have tried tera and rift before and found them hard to sync movements with.)
I think since no matter what you play it’s going to burn you out after a while, it makes more sense to leave a game for a mechanical fault. Like gear treadmills, or worse balance issues than what we have had.
Also get a handheld, not these toilet app games for your phone, a proper hand held console. I find both PC games and hand helds compliment each other by filling different parts of a niche that make it never boring. Unless you just don’t like games anymore but that’s a whole other story (at which point I say join a gym if you haven’t already lol)

After 2 years playing i still have so freaking much to do in the game, content as you call it, so why should they give you “more” content when there is 1000 of 1000 of “content” to do?,
Also is this just one of those “i’m leaving because this other game does what i want” well go play that kittening game then.
What you are saying is “Guild wars do not cater to my needs but this other game does”, so what?, go play that game if you enjoy it more and let us that enjoy a proper game enjoy guild wars

I really don’t want to sound like a fan boy because I’m not but they just announced the expansion at least give it s few months of further details before you say it’s a small expansion. I quit once I hit cap like a few months in and this just makes me want to come back and play again.

I am fundamentally different that the OP since I thrive on replaying and enjoying content. It is just something that really works for me. This being the case, I do understand that we (the OP and I) are coming from very different preferences and expectations.
That said, my experience with MMOs in general (and I have played a number of them) is that there have always been those players that are skilled and dedicated enough to chew through content quickly and do not enjoy replaying. This means that, at least as I have seen it, MMOs generally do not seem capable of generating new content fast enough to meet the desires and expectations of these players. I actively read the forums on all games I play and this complaint by the OP seems a common thread on every single forum by what appears to be like-minded individuals.
Sadly, I do not have a solution or suggestion. I recognize that this expansion as described (and possibly even as it will be implemented) may not meet your needs or expectations. Hopefully you will get some enjoyment and perhaps, now that Arenanet has committed to one expansion, that will reassure players that future expansions are possible.

As long as this expansion is priced appropriately, I will not mind. Saying that, I’d have much preferred the living story to continue into the Maguuma Jungle and then an expansion (being worked on at the same time) to head into Cantha, the Crystal Desert or even underground to aid the dwarves. To me, an expansion should add a lot. Three maps really isn’t much to me. Even if they’re as well designed as the Silverwastes… that’s not really at expansion-tier to me.
Still, waiting for you to prove me wrong, Anet. Good luck!
You don’t know how much content there is.

We don’t know how many maps there will be.
We know that there will be three different biomes. It is very unlikely that there will only be one map per biome in my eyes.
Maguuma is rather large, and we have a rather small part of it available in the game currently. If then even unlock only half of what we don’t have access to now, that will be rather large amount of areas.

Maybe I’m just a pessimist, but I really doubt they’re going to pull enough out of the hat to grab my attention. I haven’t logged in a few months anyway, because of the trait changes but we’ll see, I guess.
Thanks guys for mostly respectful replies. I have been with the game since the start and I have seen quite a few others drop from burning through content in half the time I have played. I am still playing my Mesmer, Was hoping to cap him. I may well be back this time. I dont know.
