Q:

So I bought GW2 ages ago and loved it, but due to some RL issues stopped playing early and only ever got 2 characters past lvl 30.

Now I’m coming back and I’m really enjoying the game! I’m thinking I should buy the expansion because getting both the base game + the expansion for 50$ Seems like a great deal but there is a problem…

I can’t decide if I should upgrade my current account or make a new one.

I never spent any money on my first account and I read if I upgrade my account I will get the extra character slot for free because it was made over a year ago. So that would give me 6 expansion ready characters on one account.

However the deal is so good with the bundle, (getting a Expansion ready account with 5 slots.) That it occurred to me that if I just made a NEW account, I’d actually have 10 character slots! Albeit on different accounts…

In my situation is it better to give up 1 HoT expansion character slot for 5 Vanilla character slots?

Would that be useful enough for simply the daily log in bonus?

Should I look at trying to multibox characters just for the laughs?

Is switching over to my NEW account worth shelving my previous characters and losing a few older skins or unlockables?

What do you veterans think?

Edit: I ended up making the second account. I figure the 4 extra slots would be useful to help me figure out what classes I want to play or if I want to mess around in PvP. Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah if you didn’t invest a ton of time I’d go for the second account personally. Me? While to players that were active to the whole time I’m sure I’m poor, I’ve invested many hours into the game and my character has stuff from one time events I’d not want to give up.

Now if you have a bunch of old holiday stuff and such, that would be a very hard decision indeed.

the only reason you’d want to hold on to an older account is for things like laurels or items that are account bound – other than that it’s not hard to make a level 80 character, especially if you use tomes.

then there’s the other side of that coin, sure you’ll have more items by having 2 accounts since you can farm more of the daily stuff …but it will start to feel like work.

while making a level 80 character is quick, it’s going to take a moment to catch up with all the new content with 6 characters.

fun character to max super quick, an engineer bomber …just keep dropping bombs wherever you go, things die chasing you lol

There are useful ways in which you can utilize two accounts. The most obvious would be to fill up characters on ‘secondary’ account with 20 slot bags and use them plus the bank as extra storage. Create a personal guild, and join both accounts on that guild (since you can join up to 4 guilds anyway). With some investment you can create a guild bank over time, and use that to shuffle items between the ‘storage account’ and the ‘real’ one. Park unused characters to some useful mining spot to gather resources daily, and dump them into bank.
