Tome of Knowledge advance Mastery?
Someone have tested it on last beta, and confirmed that it doesn’t affect anything nearly relevant (Thanx god).
You can still use tomes for get skill points, or use it to farm Black Lion Keys (Using 10 to get a toon at lv 10 PS asap).

The tomes of knowledge will not advance Masteries as they will be advanced by something like experience, but not yet named.

“The masteries seen in the demo are just the tip of what masteries will be available at launch, and the team will have more surprises for players. We wanted to know if all those consumables, like Tomes of Knowledge and Writs of Experience, would help players unlock all of these masteries faster. The short answer is that they won’t. The experience bar is going away and is being replaced by the mastery training bar. This training bar is in no way tied to experience, but fills up by going out and doing stuff in the world. So any item that gives you experience won’t help you train masteries.”
ANet may give it to you.
Note that masteries require two seperate recourses to advance: 1) experience and 2) mastery points. Mastery points are an account bound and limited recourse that are only gained by doing particular activities (i.e. doing a jumping puzzle for the first time, doing an adventure for the first time, completing a map for the first time etc).

You do know skill points will be removed entirely before HoT comes out right? They will be replaced by hero points.
I have a question – if I’m not interested in levelling a new character to 80 when HoT launches, should I just use all my tomes of knowledge up now (gaining extra skill pints) – because whatever MF currency would mean being able to convert to more gold?

I suspect that when the expansion comes the tomes will be reworked to give the new skill point substitute that will be used to buy items for crafting in the Mystic forge but if you don’t want to chance it and are not going to use them to level a char, then using them now is probably a good idea.

Thanks, I think I’m just going to use them now just in case.
It seems foolish to me to assume that one would never need the tomes of experience, especially when skill point scrolls are so commonplace, but hey, whatever you feel is important, I guess…

I’m a main only kind of player (only mess around with alts in pvp), so no I don’t really need tomes of knowledge.
I’ve wasted too many on levelling alts in the past, only to eventually delete those characters, so I think I’ll be better off with the MF currency rather than hoarding the tomes.

If you say so. I suppose you’ll just get more tomes after the change anyway, if you need them. The value of a single skill point is just so low, though, that spending tomes for them baffles me. I’m a pretty casual player and I have a good thousand skill points in my bank and another five hundred on my elementalist. Sure, I could spend them converting materials in the forge, but time, rather than the skill points themselves, are the main bottleneck in that.
So then if I understand correctly the Tomes of Knowledge are worthless for all level 80 toons.
What am I missing here?
