Tomes of Knowledge
Tomes aren’t changing at all.
Though I’m glad to hear that, as a WvW and PvP player, you do care about the PvE content.
You can still level to 80 with your tomes.
The problem is that you will only have 400 hero points to spend on reward tracks to unlock skills and traits. That might be all right if you’re content with one build, but if you want access to all traits and skills, you’ll need to do skill challenges to get 65 more. And if you want the elite specialization, you’ll need to do more skill challenges. Some people are estimating about 100.
Any scrolls of knowledge that you have in your possession will automatically be converted to spirit shards, and any source that used to award scrolls of knowledge will now grant spirit shards
So what is this part about here then
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/updating-your-wallet/
Scrolls of knowledge = skill point (soon to be hero point)
Tomes of knowledge = level
So tomes will still work, scrolls will be converted. You can get your new character to 80 just fine without PvE, but if you want to unlock all skills, traits, and elite specializations, you’ll need to do PvE.
Well that seems backwards, they already are having problems with screwy populations in both game modes. Why make those people PvE for anything.
And if so then return that precious map completion back to needing WvW maps as well.
It sounds like they need some new reward tracks in PvP to gain said hero points then.
You’ll have everything unlocked in PvP, so you’ll only need to PvE to get up to speed for WvW.

As a WvW Player he gets at least 13 more Hero Points, because there are 3 Challenges on each Borderland and 4 on Eternal Battleground.

This wouldn’t work with the new system. There is a fixed number of Hero Points out there: 400 from leveling to 80 and the remaining number from skill point challenges throughout the world. Nothing else gives Hero Points. The reason is, when you have a completely maxed build, you will have 0 Hero points remaining.

“So can someone explain to me what exactly is happening with Tomes?”
If you are under level 80 and use a tome, you gain a level.
If you are level 80 and use a tome, you gain a spirit shard.
Tomes to do not work towards mastery tracks.
They make us PVE because that is the heart of their game.
They can polish it up, streamline it however they wish, Anet is simply making it more difficult to level.
Call it what you will.

How is it more difficult to level? Tomes of Knowledge will still level you. I have a full stack in my inventory so I can level a few chars to 80 instantly once HoT drops. Leveling 3 characters to 80 in a matter of 10min is about as easy as it gets…
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

Because it’s easier for people to attack a strawman than to objectively look at the changes. I just broke 100 ToK myself from doing daily PvP class wins, coupled with daily logins. You get 10 ToK every 28 days for merely logging in, and I get at least 1 ToK every day from the PvP experience boosts for completing levels of reward tracks (since I started doing them every day). So, 38 ToK a month at a minimum. In two months that’s a level 77 for doing literally no PvE. There is no real complaint that can stand against this.
Edit: If you take the 6 ToK for the Ascended chest on the 28th day, that brings the total to 44 ToK per month, but I recommend taking the 20 Laurels anyway.
I made a Necro about a month ago. Each individual trait cost skill points now, and you got a skill point like every six levels I think? At 80 I had 6 points in Curses, and maybe 2 in another line. At release I remember it being a much smoother process (buy the book at 40/60/80)
Not all of us hoard Tomes.
Crystal Desert
This only affects your WvW. PvP should still all be unlocked.
You’ll get most of your Hero (skill) points leveling using the Tomes, but some additional ones will be required. If you obtain the 65 from map skill challenges now, you shouldn’t need to do it when the change hits.

What the heck does that have to do with anything? This thread is specifically about Tomes. If you want to gripe about the trait changes like everyone else then you are about a year too late and definitely in the wrong thread.
All I can say, as someone who has played since early release, is that nowadays I level faster than I did back then. I don’t get access to the traits as early, but to say the leveling up process requires those traits would be false. There are so many more opportunities to level quickly with the log-in rewards, PvP tomes, EoTM, etc. that simply was not available at release.

O.K. so once you gain the max amount of hero points you can just no longer gain more.
Ill be honest, Ill do like I do with all games, take one toon through the new story and then be done with it.
Heck I havent even done all the living stories so that might not happen either.
Whats got my goat is not only do I have to do this with a toon I insta level to 80 after xpac, but all my current ones as well if I want to open specializations and the like.
And to the person that doesnt hoard Tomes, sorry bro, but PvP gives em out like candy. I have tons of them of which I have been saving up for xpac to insta level my toons and unlock everything on them immediately and be able to use them immediately in WvW.
Remember, a L80 Character (with absolutely no Skill Challenges completed) still has access to 7/8ths (400/465 Hero Points) of all traits and skills. Thus, enabling said Character access to several different builds.
If there are some additional traits/skills the Character wishes access to, then (other than PvP) they will need to complete some Hero Challenges (there are ~half available just in the Starter Zones.)
Good luck.

So in other words, I just got my pocket picked for twenty bucks, but I shouldn’t be upset because I still have the other $140 I was carrying. And I can earn back that $20 in a couple hours work.
No. I still don’t want someone making off with my twenty.
Whatever makes you feel better. If you feel you need every skill unlocked, even if you don’t use them, then I imagine you will feel slighted. I’m sure the Devs consider your and everyone else’s feedback.
To me, it seems like a great new way to interact with Traits and Skills. Ymmv.
