Q:
Turn off Gliding
Don’t hold the space bar down when you jump.
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.
You do jump the same height/distance whether you tap the space bar or hold it down. You’ll just have to adjust to tapping space bar when you don’t want the glider to come out.

I admit that I am having trouble adjusting to this. I have a habit of holding down the spacebar while jumping (I guess because sometimes I’m holding the [fwd] key).
Still, it’s not that hard to teach myself new tricks.

Counter-intuitively, it seems you actually jump a tiny bit higher if you just tap the spacebar as opposed to holding it down. For weeks I could never manage to get any character up on the little platform at FE until one day I realized I always held space down when I tried it. Changed to trying with just a short tap and no problem, up I went. Seems repeatable, too.

Actually, no. I never played mario. (Well maybe once or twice: I never enjoyed those types of games, which is why I can’t manage the Wintersday JP — it’s the same rote memorization of the route of where to jump/dodge that I find stupefyingly dull.)
Just give us the option to turn it off. It’s such a little thing that could easily be added to the game and would help players out if they can’t get used to just tapping it.
Interesting. I consider myself to be rather super-casual (totally not interested in PvP, WvW, raids etc.), and I, with my fumbling 47 year old fingers, don’t seem to be having this problem. I’m kind of surprised that so many others are.

what i actually do is change my jump button to another button in options while doing jps i find that helps me more then trying to adapt to how long i hit space bar. it helps but sometimes i forget in the middle of a jp thats when i kick myself

Actually the better solution is what the OP asks since the gliding mechanic is broken as the glider should NOT open until the spacebar is pressed AFTER you’re airborne.
Not releasing the spacebar the moment you lift off is what I’ve always done since back in the day lag meant often a momentary ‘poke’ didn’t register, my JPs are now a nightmare.
Totally agree with the OP, there NEEDS to be an option to disable gliding, I shouldn’t have to ‘adapt’ anything.
I have this problem, I think if it would be nice to have the option.
Yes please Arena.net! kitten gliding just annoys me the kitten up when I’m trying to do jp (jumping puzzles were really enjoyable before I unlocked that gokitten gliding in Tyria thing thank you
Personally I find that Gliding makes Jump Puzzles harder! or even if its not a jump puzzle just trying to make that branch or whatever, the kitten glide kicks in and you miss it, whereas it would be so easy without gliding. It would be nice to be able to turn it off please Anet !! thanks
for guild hall JPs it makes it waaay more fun to design jumps that sometimes require you to glide a bit. seems almost natural to glide and stop gliding then jump and fall.
Yo, Ho, thieves and beggars, never shall we die
Make it an option for players to turn it off please. It makes the classic Central Tyria JPs not fun because I never know when the gliding is going to suddenly pop and mess up my jump. It’s also not consistent across all the JPs – for example, gliding is automatically barred from use on the Breached Wall JP, but it’s not barred from use on the Chaos Crystal Cavern JP.
So I see people have been begging for this for 5 months with no response from Anet? Pretty pretty please with an Omnomberry on top? I am trying so hard to just tap to jump, but that darn glider still pops out at the worst possible times. I hope you will grant us this request in a timely manner so I can get back to enjoying jumping puzzles. Thanks.
I had the problem too but then.. I have played piano and tried to remember to not have the finger on the spacebar all the time so i can just hit it once.
It just takes a bit of practice but being able to bind a special key to open&close it would maybe help people who have a bit of problem with their motorics
An option wouldn’t hurt, but there would be a lot of people who forget to turn it back on as they plummet to their death elsewhere. For me, I find JPs easier when it’s enabled, but as it’s been stated here, there doesn’t seem to be any consistency as to which JPs have it enabled and which do not.
I would like to add, it would be nice to have a much bigger alert when entering an area with gliding disabled. Right now it’s just a little icon on the buff bar, next to the 3-10 other buffs. I have yet to die from this, but it is odd going from being able to glide to nothing at all unexpectedly…
It’s easier for people to re-learn how to avoid triggering gliding than for ANet to develop another option. It took me a while and it turns out, I’m better at jumping as a result of having to adjust my technique.
My glider still triggers even when I tap. The amount of time you actually have to hold the jump button to trigger a glide is like 0.2 seconds. What they should really do is add an option to extend the length of time needed for your glider to open when you hold spacebar. Just a thought.
Or, better yet, they could give an option to disable hold to glide. Make it so you have to double-tap. Or give an option for glide on interact. I wouldn’t mind pressing f to glide all the time if it meant I didn’t have to start Troll’s Revenge over again for the 30th time because I accidentally held spacebar for a fraction of a fraction of a second too long again.

I still prefer the toggle option to disable/enable gliding.

Please allow a toggle of gliding! I was astonished when, after I started HoT with one character, all my characters started gliding, even at Lvl 2! I suck at jumping puzzles already; without gliding off I will never be able to finish another one.
Cheers! Mauzo

I had the same problem. Then I learned to be lighter on the [spacebar] and now I’m better at JPs (and I only rarely glide without meaning to).

Pretty much what I was thinking. I have had that ingrained since the 80s. Some jumps being easier than others in GW2 does not make that habit easier to break too.
I’ve never played Mario or anything like it. It just feels (real world) intuitive that when you want to go further you do more. Which means you’re constantly going against life long muscle memory of what works in the real world.
I’ve gradually learned to tap rather than hold but the problem with going against muscle memory is that if you stop paying attention to the need to only tap, “hold” can come up and you’ll glide.
ANet may give it to you.

Yes, that was my experience, too.
What I didn’t expect was that re-learning the use of [spacebar] made a lot of jumps easier for me, even in current no-glide zones.
I don’t know why this is all tied to the idea of whether Gliding is or isn’t good for Jumping Puzzles. I don’t care about JPs but I don’t want to use a glider unless I want to use a glider. It should be default OFF and switch it on in options if you want to use it.

Or let people rebind it to something that is not a jump button.

You don’t have to use a glider. There’s already a semi-toggle: don’t hold your [spacebar].
A disable option is easy from the programming point of view.
These forums are a funny thing, we usually see each other suggesting things that would take tons of programming, and a simple change of those suggest that “it should adapt.”

This is 100% the way I feel. To all of the people saying to relearn how you press the space bar, although you are technically correct, it doesn’t change the fact that a simple option in the menu could be just as effective. I mean we have an option to switch the order of inventory management in the inventory menu, but not this which seems like a no brainer. If you want to relearn how you’ve been doing jumping puzzles from launch then you can just not click the button to disable it. Nothing lost for you. For people like myself with certain motor function disabilities it would mean the difference in me even trying the new puzzles that get introduced.

Exactly, and the people who are saying to adapt obviously aren’t even troubled by the problem anymore or if at all. So their opinion is pointless. Especially for something so easy to do.
I agree with this. The glider should have a checkbox toggle like how you can hide armor pieces. I think I’ve done all but 2 of the jps, but doing them again after HoT is annoying.
Oh well that helps. I was always double tapping space to deploy the glider. Maybe I’ll be able to finish Mordremoth now that I know I can just hold it down.
Seriously, the Chaos Crystal JP has become nearly impossible. I just tap the space bar, but the glider still deploys randomly and screws it all up.
Please, PLEASE, add a disable option
Ya I am bad enough at JP’s to try not hold down the space bar. It would be nice to get the option to disable in certain places/times.
If the gliding problem is really stuffing up your game , there is a hardware fix which may help.
I use a Logitech G105 gaming keyboard which has definable Macro keys, and you can program the keys for a predefined key press time.
25 ms is enuf to make your char jump but will not open the glider as its too short.
As the keypress time is always exactly the same , no more unintended gliding.
There are many keyboards on the market that can do this.
You can also do the same with any of Logitechs gaming mice, but that means that to jump you have to press a mouse button instead of the keyboard spacebar.
This is what ArenaNet needs to do instead to fix the problem:
Option 1 – Double Tab Spacebar to Glide
Option 2 – Hold Spacebar to Glide
Option 3 – Select a keybind to Glide
PROBLEM SOLVED!
EVERYONE HAPPY! =)
Ontop of that, the problem is that – at times – tapping the space bar does not let you jump.
Having just a key-bind option (totally trivial to implement) would make things more versatile.
how to turn of autogliding:
- .stop holding the space bar until the peak of your jump
- .????
- .profit
I wouldnt mind the ability to rebind glide to a different key.
I am appalled at the number of persons asking us to change our habits. I’ve unlocked gliding recently and I had no idea it would screw up my jumps. So I looked it up on the Internet to see if I could just deactivate it, but in every posts I read, there were people asking us to suck it up and change the way we play.
Here’s the thing. Whether we play in ‘the right way’ or not, we shouldn’t have to change the way we play because of a lazy feature. How is it complicated to add a ‘disable glider’ option in the menu? Or to simply give us the option to rebind gliding and jumping to different keys if we wish so?
Arena.net, please do change this. Please.

You know, I tried changing my old, “hardwired” jumping habits.
I managed to complete some jumping puzzles by moving very slowly and it took me forever to finish them. Slow and annoying but doable.
Then I tried “The Floor is Lava?” adventure and boy, what a mess.
It turned out to be impossible for me to jump around the mushrooms quickly without accidentally turning on the glider.
I know posts like this one automatically trigger the “Git Gud” folks around here that will immediately jump to post things like:
“That ain’t true. I did “The Floor is Lava?” with all my 24 character despite the fact that I’m cross-eyed, left handed, slightly ret?rded and playing on my Pentium IV with a broken mouse. Ya’ll need to git gud"
How comes we have a disable “Double Tap to Evade” but we can’t have a similar option to disable the glider?
A couple of weeks ago a user of this forums mentioned that he felt Devs act arrogantly when implementing things into this game – or when considering if they should change something.
I’m beginning to feel that’s the case.
How else can you explain why Devs are so apathetic, so lethargic, so indifferent over a small QoL change that represents so much for many of us players?
What the hell does it take for Devs to take notice?

I can explain it by understanding that many people play this game and have different ideas that they would like to see implemented. I also understand simple tasks still lake time, and things need to be prioritized when everyone wants their ‘one little change’ to be top priority. I also understand that if I am one of the people desiring a change, the probability of ‘my’ change being the one chosen consistently over others is going to be low. Combine all those factors and it actually isn’t that hard to comprehend.
