Unstable Stuff, Salvage or Sell?
I’ve been salvaging the heck out of them. They’re a source of lower tier mats, and I need a lot of lower leather so I can make my elonian leather squares to finish tier one of Chuka and Champawat. I’m not complaining about the linen either.
If you want to just sell them, you might want to test salvage a few and compare the TP value of the mats you get to the 8s you could have received for a direct sale.
There aren’t really any statistics on it at all. I’ll wait to see if anything pops up, but I’ll probably salvage for now. Thanks, donari.

Without knowing the drop rates, my recommendation is just to salvage them — it’s fast, it’s painless, and you won’t be losing a ton of value. (Longer explanation below.)
Historically, here’s what happens to the market value of new, salvageable items:
- If there’s at least one item discovered that has a high TP value, the initial market price of the salvageable is higher than the expected value of its contents, i.e. it’s a lotto ticket: chance to win big, average player will lose modestly by purchasing-to-salvage. Economically efficient suggestion: sell.
- If all of the items are low value, the salvage item will lose value quickly, faster than the items it drops. Recommendations: salvage.
- If the items are high-demand mats (e.g. leather of various tiers, as in Unstable items), then the salvage item loses value more slowly than its drops, as people late to realize its worth tend to overpay. Recommendation: sell.
- Eventually, as the item stops being “new” & drop rates are available to the market websites, the market value of salvage item and its drops will approach an equilibrium — one will always be better, but no way to tell at any given moment without checking yourself. Recommendation: whatever is easier for you; it’s a wash for any except market mavens.
- Exception: things that can drop exceptionally high-value items sometimes still function like a lotto ticket. Depends on the item, more so than the salvageable. Recommendation: salvage unless there’s a drop worth 1g or more (check wiki).
However, this latest patch added the “salvage all” mechanic, reducing the labor involved in salvaging. As a result, it’s going to be extremely common for people to salvage without thinking about TP value of the salvage item, which will cause the market to quickly reach the equilibrium described above.
So without knowing the drop rates, my recommendation is just to salvage them — it’s fast, it’s painless, and you won’t be losing a ton of value.
Sounds good! Thanks.
