I wonder if any of the devs have considered using traits for vertical progression.

If they increased the max number of traits by 2 it would allow players to get an additional Master level trait and a 100 point boost to a stat. 100 points is enough to be a noticeable difference but it’s not an unbalancing increase.

Is that too much vertical progression for the game or is it too insignificant to worry about? Would it even be desirable?

1 – The game doesn’t need traditional vertical progression. It wasn’t designed for it, and by catering to the vocal minority who demanded it, the developers significantly diminished the quality of the game.

2 – The trait system is designed around the current number of trait points. Awarding more points (either through a level cap increase or otherwise), will demand a complete rework of the system, balance issues aside.

3 – Such a step is profoundly unnecessary when new horizontal progression systems with more potential (Specializations and Masteries) are already slated for introduction to the game.

I believe it would create more of an unbalance issue than you might imagine – at least in PvP and WvW. They had to create the adept/master/grandmaster tiers for this reason during the betas. Being able to use two extra points would open up a lot of builds I’m sure, and if they did do it they’d have to limit it to PvE; though, I’m guessing they don’t want to go down that road either as they haven’t shown the desire to even split more of the weapon/utility skills up.

yeah, there is absolutely no need for vertical progression at all in this game.

I’m sure they have considered it. And discarded the notion.

I’m not a fan of vertical progression either. This was an idle thought I had and I was curious what others would make of it.

Vertical progression in trait is actually acceptable in PVE content ONLY.
It doesn’t really affect the balance too much in PVE because you’ll face greater challenges anyway.

Yeah the more direct answer would be that more trait points would require an entire rebalancing of the system, you could do some really dumb builds with that.

It’s fun sometimes to look at though

If your not a fan why even put this stray thought into a new thread clearly you must subconsiously want it.
