Veteran entitlement mentality.
the loss of the ‘free’ core game when you upgrade is a little unfair, but mostly it’s the fact that there’s so much Anet could’ve done to prevent this, even just little things, and they didn’t.
it’s not so much that we’re owed something, it’s more that the Anet want to keep customers, it’s better to treat them with at least a little respect, and it feels like they’re not right now.
I’m entitled to equal treatment as a customer.
The expansion is $50 bucks, end of story. If you dont already have GW2 and you buy HoT you get it for free.
So, as a veteran, you get less.
Its so that it brings in more players.
It just so happens, thinking veterans are not willing to personally fund this promotion without equal compensation.

Veteran players have already gotten their fair share of free stuff, living story which if these new players want to experience they have to pay for, free level 20 boosts for being active during the anniversaries, free skins, free level 80’s if you didnt waste your tomes, and who knows what else was given out.
That was all covered by the initial game purchase.
Thinking back on all that goodness only makes the expansion look worse and worse.
I’m entitled to exactly what I paid for.
I’m entitled to equal value for my money.
By the way some veteran players like myself paid $150 for GW2 so we didn’t get anything for free.

No, this is the argument given “ive been playing since launch i should get something since new players are getting the core game for free”. That is entitlement and they dont owe you anything. You have gotten plenty for just logging in for the past 3 years.
Some of the Vets havent shown a shred of respect or even thought about what they are saying, they just want free stuff because im a vet.
Im on the side that you should never tell someone to leave if they dont like it because its bad for any type of business, but in this case, if you dont like that your not getting free stuff dont let the door hit you on the way out. The community would be SO much better.
I’m a veteran player and I never said or thought I was entitled so don’t tar us all with the same brush!
_The ONLY reason I’m not buying it yet is because the basic “bundle” doesn’t include a char slot. Why should I have to delete one of my 11 level 80’s? It should come with at least ONE slot. Until it does I’m not going to buy it.
Will I cry or lose sleep about it? NO. It’s Arenanet’s loss.

unfortunately the same argument can be made vs anet. they believe they are entitled to 50 dollars for poor service. I think it’s time to cause more silence than rage.
further the thought of the bad company that make posts like the op to be found in the expansion certainly devalues the game even more than the poor service for me.
the talk of the friendliest community on the net is obviously a lie.
No holocaust gaming for me thanks. I’m “ENTITLED” to respect – but i wont be asking anet for it.
They want our money more than we want their game, you should consider that when pretending to be holier than thou.
Entitlement is selling a feature pack for $50 and expecting people to be stupid enough to buy it while also charging another $10 on top of that for character slots that people require if they want to access a good chunk of the new content.
Veteran players have already gotten their fair share of free stuff, living story which if these new players want to experience they have to pay for, free level 20 boosts for being active during the anniversaries, free skins, free level 80’s if you didnt waste your tomes, and who knows what else was given out.

But you don’t know how much of that kind you can expect within the next 3 years again.
So basically it will be impossible to evaluate HoT until the next addon where we can say “all the content they brought over time was well worth my money” or “the content density was quite disappointing for 50 bucks”
But you simply can’t know it yet. You can only know if you are personally sure that you will have enaugh fun for your money or not.
All we wanted was a GvG.

You got nothing for free? So you just gave them $150 bucks for nothing, never played the game or anything? Thats your fault, I got plenty of free stuff. Its no ones fault but your own.
And you are getting what you paid for, the expansion. That is $50 with or without the core game attached.
I’ve seen veterans be called “entitled,” “spoiled,” “toxic,” “scum,” and “salty” so far. I should make a bingo chart.
The only thing ANet owes anyone, is a character slot with every HoT bundle to play a rev. It’s one of the core selling points of HoT. So if you are a vet you probably have filled out your slots already. I know I have, but lucky me, I had one that I had hardly played dew to not liking it. So I can delete that an roll a rev. And I have more than the standard amount of slots too. I have 4 warriors, 1 guardian, 1 ranger, 1 necro, and 1 name holding engineer that will last untill I get buy HoT and can roll a rev. So its not like I’m a cheap person who’s not dropped money.

I’d like the extra copy of Guild Wars 2, that it says you get for buying HoT, except because I already gave them money in the past, I don’t get that copy, despite them saying I will on the store page.

Why not read my post because you think I gathered up all the Vet players together into one category. You just make yourself look stupid that way. I also adressed the character slot issue. If you want it, go get it for free, its not like you CANT but you dont want to put in the work for it.
No, this is the argument given “ive been playing since launch i should get something since new players are getting the core game for free”. That is entitlement and they dont owe you anything.
So, you admit that new players get something extra when both they and veterans buy the exact same product, at the same time frame and pay the same price.
Then, asking for equal value is entitlement?
You have gotten plenty for just logging in for the past 3 years.
That’s why I bought the game years ago, instead of waiting until today. This is all covered by that purchase, and is not related to the new product, Heart of Thorns.

Because I think its worth it, and if you dont know what is in HoT maybe you should do some research.
Why exactly do some of the veteran players think ANet owes you anything?
Of course Anet does not owe anything to anyone (except for pure contractual requirements, of course). Still, dissing a large part of community (a large majority actually) in order to maybe get some new players (that will soon also end up in that first group, by the way) is not a wise business practice. Unless, of course, your business practice is dependant on high retention – but that is generally a mark of web games that aim at short time gain, and disappear after a time. MMOs usually think in more longterm way, and that has to include making sure veterans will want to stay.
Let me put it that way – a shopkeeper does not need to be civil to customers, but any shopkeeper that goes out of their way to make customers feel unwelcome will go out of business. Anet is currently showing veterans that they are not the kind of customers they are interested in.
The expansion is $50 bucks, end of story.
If you really think that the core game in this bundle costs nothing, and noone pays for it, you are really naive.
So what exactly are you guys complaining about?
Being treated like second class citizens.
If you think you are owed something because you have been playing for 3 years and new players get the core game for free to increase the size of the community that is the exact definition of entitlement.
If you think making veterans feel like second class citizens is going to increase the size of the community, remember, that a year from now (well, even few months from now) the new players will also be old ones to anet, and if they will be treated the same way the old players are now, they may leave even faster (because they won’t have 3 years of emotional investment yet).
Again, this has nothing to do with being owed something, but it has something with marketing practices that make a part of customer population feel ignored.

You are, your getting the expansion. You already have the core game.
I think you dont understand what is saying here.
A newcomer pays 45 euros for the standard edition, for free they get the core game that is included in that package.
A veteran pays also 45 euros and only get the expansion for the same amount of price but for less and not the core game.
That is the thing, no matter if you have 1-20 accounts, the core game is included in that package and right now we are not getting what we pay for because of that.
Currently it is if me and my friend would enter a fast food restaurant and i have a bottle of water with me from our walk.
We pick the same kind of dish and that includes a soda for free together with the food and is costing us totally 15 euros each.
But in this case it’s like the cashier tells me that i wont get the soda because i got a bottle of water with me. But i still got to pay the full price, i wont get a discount for it since they leave out something that SAYS is in the menu and they wont give me a soda since i got a bottle of water already
Hopefully this helps.

Then you should of gotten stuff for free,. I paid 60 for the game and gave $40 for gems probably 4 times so thats $240 spent on the core game. Ive gotten so much for free that now others have to pay for, that they wouldnt have access to until another anniversary came out, a free skin and so on. $90 in gems is nothing compared to what others have paid out in terms of buying gems.
Why exactly do some of the veteran players think ANet owes you anything? I see a lot of vet players understand that nothing is owed to them, but the vocal majority of vets here on the forums think something is owed to them.
they owe every customer the same treatment, regardless of whether they have purchased the game previously
The expansion is $50 bucks, end of story. If you dont already have GW2 and you buy HoT you get it for free. Its so that it brings in more players.

We have already paid for all that, first with our money then with our time. It has no bearing on the current situation
I paid $150 for GW2. I paid $100 for HoT. All because I feel like I get more than my money’s worth. I’ve never looked at what the player next to me payed or what they recieved. But it looks like I am in the minority.

The value is not $0 either. The last sale for GW2 was $10.
There’s no such thing as free stuff. What you got was a result of the revenue from GW2 boxes sold and gem store sales. Either you paid for part of it or you rode the coat tails of those that did.

There were a lot of promises made and broken by Anet in time. From fixing stuff within the game, to not having the Gem Store as the core of their game. I won’t hold them responsible for most of that kitten – much. Someone else decides, I think, where the money and the team’s effort goes.
Also, it’s less about entitlement, dear OP, and more about fair treatment (and a good dose of precendence – with all new class packages from Anet delivering the corresponding character slots).
Next… free stuff you say?! Like free broken conditions mechanics for 3 years? Or maybe free missing story chapter for 2? Oh! Oh! Must be the free buggy events (that got even achievements attached to later on)?! No?! Hm… Certainly you’re not talking about the festivals, ‘cause then again, it’s something some people always loved at GW1 and something that almost all mmos host and offer free stuff while at it! And most certainly you’re not talking about the LW, out of which S1 was only available for those playing at that time (at pretty laggy, I understand), neither about S2, which I kinda payed for.
Lastly, and probably the most important part, HoT doesn’t look nor feel like an expansion or addon. It feels like a reworked GW2 (changing/improving mechanics instead of adding maps). Which would raise yet another question: So with barely any new content, the veterans would pay for the game again only because it’s The Guild Wars 2?! Or because Anet said it’s an expansion?! Really now… how was that saying? “Don’t… on my shoes and tell me it’s raining”?!
Bla bla bla…

What marketing trick, they said “the expansion is $50”. If thats a marketing trick you must be skeptical of everything. And no, its not a bundled product, its HoT, if you dont have the core game they are going to give you that for purchasing the game.
What would you like Anet to include in the veteran version?
A character slot included in the cheapest version of the expansion ($50) only available to veterans. This would make it seem fair to me.
Nobody said they owed people anything.
What we’re saying is we aren’t buying this deal, because it’s outrageous by every pricing standard of games.
Do you see a movie charging triple ticket price just because it’s an anticipated movie? No, because that’s price gouging and in most cases you’re not allowed to get away with it. If you want to help a company get away with it that’s your choice.
