If you’re happy with your prepurchase, you can probably stop reading now.

If you’re not, and you think that because newcomers are getting the core game and the expansion for the same price as you’re getting the expansion, that you need to be compensated in some way, continue reading.

When did you start complaining about the core game being discounted? When it was only $30? $20? Did you finally start complaining when it was $10? Tell me, what is the difference in someone getting the core game for $30 less than you, and them getting it for $50 less than you? They are getting a better value, regardless, if you’re talking straight money. So then why is it so different when they get the game for free rather than paying $10? It’s just another $10 off, like the other discounts. I think what many people fail to realize is that the expansion was going to be $50 regardless of what the core game sold at. It’s just a discount like any other.

How selfish of you to think that you need to be compensated by a company that has given you thousands of hours of enjoyment, just because they decide to make it easier for others to do the same. You know what you got from the deal of having to pay more for the game? You were able to enjoy the game all this time! THAT’S your compensation.

You got hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of entertainment, and yet you complain about someone else getting the game at a discount.

I would love to see you here on the forums the first time they put HoT on a discount, cause it’s all the same.

I started complaining the second that they showed that whichever bundle I chose included software I already own. I don’t need another copy of GW2. As for selfish, well it is my money so that’s my business. Was I mad the game was slashed to $10 yes, but did I complain? No. I want new players I’m simply not buying what Anet is selling. I already own GW2 so I’m here regardless of whether I buy HoT.

what i think they need to do is rebuild the value of the core game back to 49.99 and give the expansion free to new purchasers…that would squash one confusion….

everyone will eventually own the upgrade because it will go down in price over time, anet does great work and you can be sure there will be something insanely fun to play when you are ready for something new. The vet players will already be there complaining about everything that needs fixing….. i had to admit i’d eventually own it, but even now that i’m cool with everything, i’m still waiting a few to see how it all pans out. beta weekends aren’t for a while, the game isn’t going to be released in a while and they are still revealing new stuff.

I’ll say what I said elsewhere. This is what all major MMOs are doing now, or will be doing in the near future. There’s a reason for it.

The more expansions that come over time, the harder and harder it gets to have a new person come into the game, which is bad for the game and bad for veterans too.

If you buy the base WoW game and the current expansion you like like four, five expansions for free that others paid for. So all you have to do is wait about ten years, get the last expansion they come out with and you get them all.

I’ll buy them as they come out and play them when they’re new and exciting, thanks. WoW is doing it. EQ is doing it. Guild Wars 2 is now doing it because it makes sense. It’s what they should be doing.

And if you don’t think getting new blood into the game helps veterans, I don’t know what to tell you.

This isn’t a slap in the face to you. You, like everyone else, has a choice. Play the game when its’ new, or wait until it’s on sale much much more cheaply. I bought games for $60 on launch that were later $5 on steam. Those guys don’t care about us veterans.

It’s always been the option to wait until it’s cheaper and many people do. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter that you won’t buy it because new players are getting it included. It’s becoming the standard.

I don’t know about the other vets, but i like new players, i still need lower tier mats so i farm them. new players are especially good for linen, silk and iron ore those are rather costly at the black lions. so thank you new players <3

I’ve supported ArenaNet and bought all their expansions since Guild Wars Prophecies.

And you accuse me of selfishness when I’m a bit miffed that they don’t bother to include an additional character slot with an expansion?

Great post OP, also you didn’t mention…..

All the unobtainable skins, recipes and items that can no longer be acquired by new accounts is part of the privilege launch time veterans have, how awesome is it to equip an item you know is coveted by many but no matter what they do they will never ever be able to own it.

That right there is what you got plus all the free content updates and feature packs no one seems to remember when talking about value for your money…….

How convenient it is to have selective memory eh……

I honestly couldn’t care less that they include the core game with the expansion. The core game was already getting discounted to next to nothing, so piffle. And bringing in new players is always a good thing.

What had my hackles raised was that an expansion that was already a priced bit steeply for the announced content, didn’t even have an extra character slot to experience a big chunk of that expansion’s new content (the Revenant) with.

And that has now been resolved.

You did receive what you paid for. Hours upon hours of entertainment. Stories and events that won’t ever happen again. If you’re so concerned about money, please skip this expansion and wait for it to be free with the next one. Milk and bread is more important. No room for saltiness.

Please re-read what you quoted. It’s selfish to think that you need to be compensated BECAUSE Anet decides to make it easier for new people to enjoy the game.

Whether an additional character slot should be given with an expansion is a different conversation on its own, but just because they don’t include something that is not required (whether or not you’ve used up your 5 character slots is on you, you knew that’s how many you got when you bought the original game with the option to buy more) but you could use it does not mean you’re entitled to it. I think it’s an incredibly generous gift to include an extra slot now after all the complaining people did.

Saltiness…. The vernacular of the sea.

It’s about value not the amount. I’ve more than had enough of people telling me what great value I’ve received for my money. I’ve enjoyed the game I don’t claim otherwise, but when told I’ve received something for free when I paid full freight is when I correct those people.

The complaint is not about new players getting more. It’s about an expansion pack priced at a full game price when it will feature nowhere nearly enough content to justify that price.

This is not what the discussion is about. It’s about a small expansion that probably doesn’t even feature Mordremoth, being priced as a full game, while the core game is supposedly included for free with it.

If we are not getting a full game worth of content, then why is it priced as such, and is the core game really included for free with that price?

The Heart Of The Matter

The complaint is not about new players getting more. It’s about an expansion pack priced at a full game price when it will feature nowhere nearly enough content to justify that price.

This is yours, but there are actually several complaints woven together that all revolve around questions of value, perceived value, and the nature of online gaming.

Some of them are reasonable and well-articulated, like yours, while others are unreasonable and sometimes barely coherent.

ArenaNet is being bombarded with all of them, so untangling all of it and drawing some sort of sensible line can’t be easy, and it’s clear that some players simply cannot be appeased, no matter what.

I think offering a character slot was a nice gesture, but the only way to resolve the question of the expansion’s value is to make the case to players.

So far, we’ve been given a decent amount of information, but for many players, not enough to decide whether to lay down their hard-earned cash for Heart of Thorns.

Making that decision easier is ArenaNet’s job, so here’s hoping they get on it ASAP.
