Okay. Offical solution: GRIND-FARM for it!
Boom! There goes the anti-grind policy.
Couldn’t shot yourself in the leg more accurate, dear ArenaNet.
Just saying…

What’s Your idea to offer parcipiation?
I suggest a HoT Beta Achievement list to work on and getting the portal stone.

A:

Ofc it was full. MMOs are all about the loot..and that item was the only truly valuable item you could loot in that map. Once the item was removed you already see a large of players stopped coming.

An mmo without good loot is not an mmo you keep playing. Most of us are back to doing just dailies.

GW2 is filled with just “temporary” successes. It needs more permanent stuff.

This is not grinding to me. Grinding is spending several hours doing one or two activities to get a small amount of reward, over and over and over, till you can turn that small amount of reward into one large one.

What if, instead of calling it a dropped item, Anet just said “While playing in Maguuma a happy little quaggan npc may spawn near your character and invite you to join the beta”

Same exact mechanic, but now its feels like Willi Quaggan and the Beta Factory, and everyone would be dancing naked in Lions arch when it happens to them.

Well yes. Doing same activity over and over and over and over again for a chance of getting a rare drop you want is not grinding. It’s a….erm…yyy……“RNG based training of your mastery over a given section of a game!”

Here’s what i would do:

Open beta.
If that would be hard becuase of server load, i would do world-based open beta. For 2 days or so given set of worlds can access the beta. After that another set of worlds gets it’s access.
World guesting and changing home world disabled for the duration of beta.

conspiracy theory
Or maaaaaybe they just want to rack up the stats of the maguuma wastes zones playthrough to say later: "The new type of content that we’ll build upon in x-pac has garnered mass player attention and support (part about those masses being for beta access not mentioned).

This is not an Open Beta.

This is also no worse than refreshing random fan/gaming news websites for the chance that those specific websites got keys and you managed to refresh at the right moment and grab a key before it runs out.

I do think that they probably should’ve made it a possible drop everywhere instead of just SW/DT. But since the beta test is for PvE content, it does make sense to try and get the mainly PvE players for this particular test.

Well spvp did get open stronghold beta, so there. Also what is the difference again between random selection closed beta and open beta? Cause it’s not the quality of testers if you ask me. And if it’s numbers of ppl getting access…well solution above.

sPvP and this are two different things. Stronghold was clearly polished enough that they just wanted to know whether or not people liked it and to make minor tweaks. Hence why it was open. Closed Beta and Open Beta are different because the content being tested are at different stages of development/readyness.

We’re speaking about Closed Beta now.
Luck on rolling your name out were always the methood, and increasing your chances with actions (like share, like this and that…) are the boosts usually.
In this case, they ask us to do what we shouldn’t. To Grind for it….

Even if it were a map with queue – would be better choice IMHO than farming mobs for an item that’s same “well optainable” than a precursor.

I’ve seen some nice idea mentioned above this post and I really hope AN changes their methood for the selection.

We’re speaking about Closed Beta acces with a terrible (imo…) methood to get into.
It’s like; Don’t trust in RNG? Boost your chances with even more RNG! You only have to grind!

Open Beta is way away and every user will get the access ofc. That’s a clear thing.

Well, sir, I say this to you.

If you want it you got to work for it, or maybe just do a few bosses in SW, get the chests.

The reason this isn’t classed as grind (In my opinion) is because you do not have to get this portal to play the game. It is YOUR choice to spend hours at a time killing many a thing to get this beta key.

Let’s say we want to check HoT, because we find the base game terribly boring by now… +2 years.

So, apart from being rolled out from sign-ups, all we can do is to grind.
I agree, it is more than a simple “RNG”, just saying it’s a really bad design to improve our chances.

You have a choice:

Passively sit back and hope to be chosen from the mailing list, or..
Try for a drop by actually playing in Maguuma Wastes.

No forced grind required. Good luck.

This is not about giving you access to the new shiny game. It will be your job to make sure it’s shiny on release. Your job to find bugs, glitches, or just be there during stress tests.

And the design is perfectly fine. It’s more than what other devs give you. And it’s completely up to you whether you want to grind or not. You can just sign up and hope to be chosen; no grind required.

Just another “I didn’t get my portal” thread.

In terms of loot, SW is rather good. I also quite enjoy the permanent map that was created and many others do too as the map is generally well occupied. Chests are good, even loot has good possibilities as well, and let’s not forget the Preserved Queen Bee drop which is going for as much or more than a precurser.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
