Just a quick thing here. I saw the live stream of the Chronomancer and while most of the names of skills were related to time there was one that stuck out as strange to me, “Well of Gravity.” While the name does fine explaining what the skill’s function is I feel naming it this is a mistake. I think something along the lines of Singularity, Singularity Point, or if you must have the word “well” in the title perhaps Singularity Well.

A singularity is defined as a point at which a function takes an infinite value, especially in space-time when matter is infinitely dense, as at the center of a black hole.

I feel that these names better fit the theme of time magic than well of gravity. Another reason I think you should consider renaming the skill is to leave room for, and save references to gravity for future specializations like a geomancer for the elementalist or some kind of gravity magic specialist down the road that would have lots of knock downs, floats (on ground), pulls, pushes, slows, etc.

Agreed, Well of eternity sounds timely, calamity sounds like an unpleasant time, recall sounds like a reversal of time and procog a glimps forward in time.

action I’m not sure where the time pun comes in, but gravity certainly is way off the bat for a chronomancy name.

Well of fluctuation, singularity, collapse, slip-space, reverse etc could be better suited names as they relate in some way to time in a function that could affect a person’s position.

Would be nice to see if they change this, well of gravity is a cute name but it really doesn’t fit the named theme of a chronomancer. Sounds like a time wizard suddenly affecting something that isn’t exactly time but rather force like as you said a geomancer.

Heck uroboros well or well of uroboros could also suit better as the definition of this word is “a circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail, as an emblem of wholeness or infinity.”

No matter how many times you go around you end up at the same place, much like being pulled to a central location.

I wonder if they will change the name or not, but i agree it could do with a more time oriented title.

I belive it is a play on the term: Gravity Well

From Wiki: A gravity well or gravitational well is a conceptual model of the gravitational field surrounding a body in space – the more massive the body, the deeper and more extensive the gravity well associated with it. The Sun is very massive, relative to other bodies in the Solar System, so the corresponding gravity well that surrounds it appears “deep” and far-reaching.

All those are great suggestions! I am hoping we can create enough noise with this post that maybe something happens. HoT is still in development and hopefully if the community agrees with us they will in fact change it.

I agree that effects wise the name works, however Chronomancy should have time flavored skills and while gravity, like speed interacts with time I would still argue that gravity should be delegated to another specialization rather than the time magic specialist.

I don’t see a problem with it – as has been said, a nice play on the phrase “gravity well”, and the skill does what it says.

It’s not really comparable to a singularity due to the mechanics (tbh spear #5 vortex is more fitting for that name) – pulsing pulls and then a TBD final effect which I hope will stay as a float but could be changed to knockdown if they feel it’s too powerful. It is bending time/space by the definition, so it does fit chronomancer in my opinion.

I don’t see it as a problem if another profession’s future elite spec overlaps in the name of this skill.

The thing is. The laws of physics show us that gravity and time are connected. With time actually moving slower (relatively) around higher concentrations of gravity. (someone correct me if im wrong please).

Hence why its stated if you could survive long enough to reach the event horizon of a black hole youd end up reaching a point where the time on one side of your body would be moving at a NOTICEABLY different rate than the time on the other side of your body. Of course im not an astrophysicist so I can’t be even CLOSE to certain. All I can do is regurgitate what ive seen and read >.<.

REGARDLESS.

In that respect the name gravity well is actually VERY accurate. A severe body would actually have a direct effect on time. (Although a severe enough body of gravity to produce results DIRECT results I imagine would be unhealthy for the planet as a whole… chronomancers may be more dangerous than we thought).

The game is set in a magic-punk world where they haven’t heard the theories of our modern understanding of the universe.

So using technical terms that are references to our modern understanding of spacetime like “singularity” wouldn’t make sense in the Guild Wars 2 universe.

Like people said above Well of Gravity isn’t an inaccurate title for the skill and it sounds a lot more like something someone in the current Guild Wars 2 universe would call the skill.

Well of Eternity

Unless it mutates nocturnal humanoids into eight feet tall Elves with glowy eyes and a penchant for opening dimensional gateways to the Beyond, I think this might need a new name as well.

Any class is easy to play, but not as easy to master. So sod off, warrior-haters.

It’s called Gravity Well, not Well of Gravity.

Gravity Well is a Physics reference. It’s usually used in the context of black holes. I like the name and think it’s totally appropriate based on what I saw it do.

I also vote for: gravity well since gravity is the source of power in a singularity.
