What HoT Prices SHOULD Have Been
Judging from past experiences, and what they’ve shown us, I was thinking $29.99.
But then again, we do get a “free” copy of the core game, that many of us already have. So that apparently boosts the price….

According to a post from the development team (I’ll see if I can find it), the initial cost for the base expansion was $50, which is what it is now. They added in the core game to each edition as a free bonus for new players, so that they can play and level a character (or characters) up to 80 to play the new content and learn the current game mechanics.

They have shown us nothing to warrant a 50 dollar price tag. I’ve seen more from GW1 expansions, and they were much less.
It should have been free.
Because I’m an entitled gamer without making any valid arguments.
Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!

I agree, but it doesn’t change the fact that the price for the expansion was $50 without the game, and the core game was added as a bonus to new players. It is essentially the same scenario for individuals who purchased Guild Wars 2 during the $10 weekends. They got the discount, and the community didn’t make as many complaints as the community is producing now.
I never said $50 was or wasn’t an appropriate price for the expansion (based on the information we have currently). I’m hoping after we know all the information about everything in Heart of Thorns that it does warrant kitten price tag. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.

If you purchase any of the editions, you should be able to redeem that code on your current account.
If redeemed on your current account, then you get all of its benefits without the core game (since you already have it). If you purchase it and redeem it as an account on its own, then you get the core game included as well as all of its benefits.
EDIT: I see. I’m not exactly sure, I’d message support on that and see what they say. I think it’s a single code, that includes the core game (if you don’t have it) and its benefits according to the edition you purchase.
It would be nice to have the expansion and core game separate, but I’m not sure if it works that way.
Considering HoT is the price of a full game people will be expecting the content equivalent of a full game. It’s as simple as that.
Anet better deliver because a single pvp map does not equal the pvp content expected of a full game. That said, I paid for it already, I just hope Anet’s release is going to justify the price tag.
It is not uncommon to sell an expansion and ship the base game for free with it. Age of Conan’s first expansion “Rise of the Godslayer” came with the core game included but only one key. So new players got the core game, the expansion and a free month on top of that for the purchase, while veterans got the expansion and nothing more and people didn’t complain about it as much as they do here.
The real problem is that ANet sells the expansion at the cost of a full game, while we – as far as we know – will not get nearly as much content as we got with the release of the core game. So this makes the offer look like a rip off.
Look, if ANet sold GW2:HoT for $30, including the core game, noone (well there are always some) would complain. Everyone expected to shell out 30 bucks anyway. But $50 and most every veteran will have to buy an additional character slot, which makes the expansion cost more like $60, that is just blown out of dimension.
And that is the problem.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
Here is the quote I found that states the expansion is $50, and the core game was added, for free, as a bonus to new players:
To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.

HoT doesn’t just include the core game, it is the core game now. GW2 is no longer sold by itself. It’s just HoT now.
Purchasing HoT gives you a HoT access key. That key can either be used to upgrade an existing GW2 account to a HoT account, or used to create a new HoT account.
My problem with the prices is that the expansion contains many of the so much asked content for years now, the most asked for are the guild halls that were present in the first game. Despite all the hype, this expansion has very little content if we exclude all the content that should have been present at the game launch day. With that, the base price of $50 is ridiculously high.

What $30??
That’s too much I’m an entitled gamer and you all are white knighting Anet shame on all of you the expansion should be purchased with gems so it can be free. Also $30 with no character slot, bag slot, or new race???? Shouldn’t even cost gems should just be straight up.. wait no Anet should be paying me to play this game cause I’m super important and self absorbed I cast down my divine judgement on all of you because your not aloud to have a different opinion than me.
I agree $30 is a reasonable price for the base package, after all you’re not paying for 20 plus zones, 4 plus regions, half a dozen dungoens with 3 paths each, a WVWVW map with the equivalent of 5 maps, half a dozen PVP maps.

I would pay $100 if i could have it today!!!!

If only, here the expansion costs 45 euros, that is the average price of a full game.

I think he was being sarcastic. It is $50, $75, or $100 here, depending on what tier you select. $5o is very close to the average cost of a full game. I was expecting closer to $40 or maybe $45. Especially since it sounds like not a lot of maps being added, just new mechanics and leveling system. I’m disappointed, & am having to consider if it is worth it to me, where as at a lower price I would have just bought it immediately.
