GW2 was released with a story about dragons but we gotta buy this expansion to do the whole story. I don’t mind buying it but what happened to Living World updates to bringing the content? Is this just a marketing ploy?
I better clarify to calm down the kids.
What is going to happen to the living story after the expansion for those who don’t play HoT? Will they get the same stories as those who don’t?

Please stop reading my thread with a troll mentaility or someone with ill mannered intentions. It is a simple question and if u can not answer constructively then control you impulses to respond because you feel you should be heard.

No which is exactly my point. Why an expansion when everything can be brought LW?

Because an expansion is far beyond anything even the combined 40 living world updates ever brought to the game. When was the last time a living world update gave you an entirely new profession, a handful of new zones, an entirely new progression system, multiple character path advancements, guild halls, new pvp maps, new weapons for each class and whatever else they’re doing? Its cute you think that should all just be free because you feel entitled to it but that’s not the way real life works.

I don’t mind that we are getting an expansion, but I will definitely want living world as well. Not because we might have to pay for HoT or anything but like I have said before, there is just not enough content (no matter how much there may be) to keep me busy until the next exp comes out (which may be another year or two). Personally I loved living world and would be very sad to see it go, but let’s see what else is announced before jumping to conclusions like that.
By the way, where is this trailer ppl are posting about? (didnt watch announcement)

Edit: never mind about the trailer, I found it. I think it looked very disappointing to be honest, but I suppose it would be good for people who care about guild halls, PvP modes and the like. However the end cutscene for point of no return was incredible because it was advertising the story more than anything else, which I all I want from the expansion. I want to see mordremoth in a dungeon, boss fights and more story episodes like in LW: S2 so I hope there is that also but I know that this game was not designed for me specifically.

Based on what they advertised my guess is this will be free. Basically it’s living world story, horizontal progression, and some features that should have been in at launch (guild halls, missing third heavy class).

Because ANet is a profit driven business.
It’s a bit more complicated than that (for example box sales can cover initial development costs etc.)

They put a lot of work into the living story and these new contents.
I think it’s justified they want to make some more money, since they don’t have any gaming fees.
After 40 Episodes (which I only played 8 of since i’m only in the GW2 community for 10 months now), which were free, and the general content I’d pay 20 euros in a heartbeat for this expansion. But i’m afraid it will be more…

The Living World may/ will likely continue being released the same way it is being released now. The episodes, though, would take place within the new regions included with the expansion.

Debating whether or not the content included with the expansion could have been free is just so much wheel spinning.

A good question would be whether or not unlocking future LW episodes requires the expansion. If unlocking does require the expansion, anyone who can not purchase the expansion before the next LW episode may continue to not purchase the expansion as the cost of unlocking episodes grows.

edit: Gating story behind a paywall is not unheard of within mmos, consider LOTRO.

Here’s what living world does, at least so far… it builds into the next dragon. I completely understand why the actual dragon story should be an expansion. I don’t want to wait the 2-3 years of LS releases something this scale would require. I’d be 60 by the time we killed the last dragon and finally opened the sea routes back to Cantha.

Edit:

Ideally, the next LS would branch away from Maguuma (perhaps head into northern Shiverpeaks or further east into uncharted Ascalon) as something comes up deserving a bit of our attention regarding Jormag or Kralkatorikk as those who bought the expansion take down Mordremoth and help out whenever we have a spare moment to WP away from Maguuma. Those who don’t get the expansion will be the first strike into the next Dragon’s domain.

There will be new content outside the expansion?
I’ve had a few people already tell me already they wouldn’t be getting it and they would probably just quit playing. The most reasonable complaint that I’ve heard from them was that players will be off playing the expansion leaving a large portion of the players behind with nothing to progress on. It does bother me because I’ve played with some of them for almost 10 years and now they are having their community taken away from them.

How is this in anyway reasonable? I don’t understand how a large portion of players will have nothing to progress on, can you elaborate? If you mean for pre-level 80’s consider that more people will be coming back to the game, leveling the new revenant profession in all of the older zones. And as far as the new zones go it’ll be just like when new living story introduces new maps (or portions of). I don’t understand what about this would make people want to leave, unless you mean these people expect ALL of the content to be free otherwise they are quitting, if that’s the case then what is reasonable about that?

I would suggest waiting for more information from ANET before jumping to conclusions. We don’t have all the details on how the expansion will affect the LS or if indeed it will at all. Why jump to conclusions and unnecessary anger when we don’t even have the full scope of the expansion and what it entails? Focus on the positives. Wait to cast judgement. This forum thread looks silly to be honest because people are having tantrums over nothing that is certain. Relax for now and watch.

When have they ever said they would stop LS? Seriously, you’re going off hype train now for your fears. If it didn’t come from a Dev it CANNOT be taken seriously (especially since a lot of what Devs have said in the past can’t be taken seriously as well, though we are finally getting scavenger hunting for Pres.). Also, every MMO I have ever played has done free stuff between expansions. This isn’t new. CoH had issue updates between xpacs (then Villains came out and so did Going Rogue) which progressed its story to a degree. WoW has raids (does WoW have a coherent story? I never paid attention) and gear treadmill between xpacs.

Why wouldn’t GW2 which has some of the best content (story wise) building up to their xpacs I’ve seen do the same? I mean, WoW has absolutely no connection between BC and WotLK (playing WC3 gives a bit of a connection between those two), you just suddenly go to Icecrown because a new villain pops up out of nowhere (this is even more abundantly clear between the next expansions for WotLK between MoP and MoP between WoD).

GW2 has 6 elder dragons we KNOW about, 5 expansions alone for those. Not to mention the mystery surrounding the Gods’ disappearance and what’s been going on in Cantha or why hasn’t Palowa Joko tried taking over the world again and many other questions regarding the state of the world.

GW2 had a crazy Sylvari who thought she was doing something to help the world- using Destinies Edge and the Pact as an example to just DO something about the threat though in the wrong way- but unleashed one of the other Elder Dragons fully. Season 2 showed us how Mordremoth’s awakening affected the world and gave us clues towards tracking him down to bring the fight to him. BOOM Expansion where we fight Mordremoth.

It actually ties together. Especially if they use LS during this time to show a different dragons influences, why wouldn’t Jormag or Bubbles attack while half (those who buy the expansion) are busy fending of Mordremoth now that we’ve shown we can take down Zhaitan when our attention is focused on him? Mordy was still sleeping for that, poor fool, the others were probably just waiting for a distraction before pouncing.

I wasn’t able to watch the announcements, did they confirm that HoT includes the story of defeating Mordermoth?

They did not. They told us the beginning of what we’ll find, not the climax. So we know we’ll be going into a set of jungle zones, and there will be many new things in there, but in the lead up story review Colin noted that the Pact and many of the various race’s forces loaded up on the ships and got destroyed. So we are now without our armies. He said the rest of us are what remain to fight. (Since around 40K people watched this, that’s a darn good army size … )

There were no comments on any Personal Story changes. They did say they want to make the game even more social, make you happy to see another player arrive because things will only get better; that might preclude instancing the players away.

Many people are asking about the future of the Living World; it is a valid question. Of course, no one else has managed the OP’s flair for the dramatic.

Perhaps the threads asking about the future of the LW could be merged and we could steer the conversation away from name calling and jousting with vocabulary.

Thank you. HoT may end being the stage for a continued LW. Even if HoT includes defeating Mordermoth, the LW could tell horizontal stories similar to the Southsun Cove arc. That was my favorite arc so far because it progressed horizontally, told the story of what it meant to be a commoner in Tyria.

i can’t contest in terms of permanent content, but i’ve gotten more play experience as an active player since LW was invented, than this expansion can offer in zones or pvp/wvw maps. i beta tested EotM in first person view, i saw the rise of Skyhammer, and saw the demise of that one water pvp map that everyone hated, cuz water, saw the beginning of pvp progression, new heal skills, Courtyard, the revamp of the home borderlands, the wvw ruins at 50 stats per cap, then nerfed to 30/50/60 which was lame (i personally would have done 30/60/90). i’ve seen the glory days of Fiery Rush, and it’s demise. i’ve seen the expansion to fractals and the revamp to it’s reward system. the list goes on and on, and i haven’t even mentioned my experience with the temporary content, it belittles this paid expansion by hours and hours. the only solid defense this expansion has is a new class, guild halls, and new weapon skill sets. i’d appraise this expansion as 20 dollars, if they had gone through the trouble to make Tengu a part of this expansion (which granted, wouldn’t work thematically), even so, i wanted to see Tengu in the first ever expansion, i would have paid at least 40 dollars for that alone.

I don’t mind buying it but what happened to Living World updates to bringing the content?

The Living World was a failure. It did not keep enough people playing to be profitable for ArenaNet/NCSoft. Hence the need to try to make money in some other way. An expansion is likely one of the last options they have.

I assume that this expansion will end with us killing Mordremoth. after that, there’s little reason for the living world to stick around in that area. Maybe another dragon or enemy will become a threat we’ll need to deal with in the living world.

No which is exactly my point. Why an expansion when everything can be brought LW?

Because people have an expectation, after two years, that there should be an expansion. There’s this belief than an expansion, whether correct or not, will add a huge amount of content to chase.

http://dulfy.net/2015/01/24/gw2-heart-of-thorns-pax-south-livestream-notes/

The huge amount of content.

Still, ANet is giving the people what they want. If they want to disguise Living World content as an expansion, and make us pay for it, who are we to complain?

That all said, I completely see your point. But we’re in the minority.

Anyway you made it perfectly clear why anet has to do something else besides living stories when you stated a large population only log in when a new living story comes out.. Players need more then just this living story and the only way to do that was to make an expansion. Like others have pointed out you got about 40 living world updates for free!!! Its just not keeping the player base around anymore so I’m all for this expansion if it brings out more players and pushes for more challenging content.

The only thing that should even the slightest bit concern an expansion is the new class. Everything else is just a few months (not even) of living story updates. So what are they going to do for all those players without the EXPAC?
If u don’t want them deleted keep them on topic and discuss the living world after expac instead of imposing your negative opinions.
