One of the revenant skills throws up a wall that moves with the player, this moving shield is what guardian should have gotten in the first place. Shield of the avenger, shield of absorption and wall of reflection should all be able to move with you like the shield of wrath. Guardians have zero mobility so forcing you to stand still while blocking means nothing if a ranger or mesmer is still 1500 units from you when the shield ends.

For all we know revenant might be stuck channeling that skill and not being able to do absolutely anything else whereas guardians can just pop the wall where they want and do whatever they want at the same time.

No point judging these things before we get first hand experience of these skill that isn’t just Anet PR talk.

If you reread the blogpost and interviews out there, Roy says that ‘new tech’ allows these powers.

On the upside, this means that it’s likely the specialisations will have them.

I love how he calls it “new tech” when all they did was find a way to bind the wall to the player controller (avatar). I mean I’m sure it took some doing, but its not like they split the atom or anything.

you don’t know anything about their game engine so you shouldn’t judge new tech, it could be more work in the engine than it looks like… and I think you don’t know much about programming when you compare it to splitting the atom to trivialize their work…

Um actually I do have a little experience making games in a game engine. It’s not brain surgery. It’s object oriented programming. They figured out how to parent the wall effect to the avatar so that it moves along with the avatar. It’s not exactly new in gaming, just new to GW2.

It sounds like it has a big drawback as well since you can only block from the angle that is covered by the shield. And the shield follows your character direction, so if you want to use it effectively you’re very limited in what directions you can move.

you don’t understand what I mean… they have their own game engine and programming IN game engine and programming game engine are two different things… you just used some tools from engine, but when engine don’t support something, you have no chance to do it until you implement it into the engine… that’s why they called it new tech, because engine didn’t support that kind of skill before, it’s not meant to be new invention, just GW2 engine update

Ok I get what you mean now and that makes sense. It’s still a bit like calling a “trunk” new technology on the next car they invent, just because they had to build and design a trunk for that car. Again, it’s not new to gaming (or even programming), just new to GW2.

I wouldn’t rule out existing professions getting them either. I can’t remember where I read it but I recall one of the devs said to expect changes to existing abilities courtesy of this tech.

Don’t forget that something like Wall of Reflection is basically defined by XYZ coordinates (set at cast) and its effect is based on vectors. The Revenant’s moving wall can’t be defined by coordinates, so it is a much more complex bit of programming.

well the wall of reflection works both ways, so if someone flanks you, you just move to the other side of it, whereas the revenant’s wall would get him pew pew’d.

and the shield bubbles are omnidirectional, absorbing everything from everywhere (they’re also one hell of a knockback). different applications.

now if you had brought up zealot’s defense… that skill could seriously see some improvements on how its defense mechanics work (bet you didn’t even know it protected you against projectiles)

Why would any guardian not? It’s right there in the skill description.

That said, I think I’ve only ever used it once for that purpose and mostly just to satisfy my curiosity and see this aspect in action. In PvE at least there aren’t many mobs it would be terribly useful against. Maybe hylek poison darts?

I’ve always assumed it was designed that way primarily for PvP.

Guardian walls “reflect projectiles”. Revanent s “field of mist” skill “blocks incoming projectiles”, there is a difference.

As well, what says guardians will not have a similar skill added or some skill functionality changes?

::Sigh::

it doesn’t exactly see a lot of play for that purpose in PvP either, since the window is so small. plus, guards in PvP are usually either on mace or scepter, if they’re not using 2h weapons.

Not too surprising if I think about it. I almost never use the sword in PvE either. It’s ok with a torch but everything else is just a little bit better.

I made the PvP assumption because at least I can see it being theoretically useful there v eg. ranger / thief / whoever else channelled projectile attacks.
