The expansion is incredibly awesomely overwhelmingly fantastic.

What disappoints me is the number of posts on this forum, claiming exactly the opposite. These wonderful devs poured their heart and soul into this rich experience, and you’re all kittening on it because there is the slightest bit of challenge.

No one on here is asking “How do I do this?” It’s all “I can’t do this.”

Put your fingers to use learning how to rise to the challenge, instead of demonstrating your stereotypical Internet rage.

You might just find not only this game, but life, more enjoyable.

It’s too easy to follow the herd. There’s no value in being that kind of person.

So you are disappointing yourself then? Because that is not a common complaint. I have not seen anyone complain that there is the slightest bit of challenge, but giving you the benefit of the doubt that there is someone out there who did, still leaves your depiction inaccurate.

Actually, to take your analogy further, and make it more accurate: you drive through the beautiful scenery, you stop at nice places on the way, but when you get to your destination, you are forced to turn around because you need to go back and get a spoiler for your Toyota and some new mag tires. Then you have to turn around and drive through the same scenery, stopping at the same places, with the same people and events progressing in exactly the same way, before you area allowed to actually enjoy your destination. Then, as you begin to explore your destination, you find out you need to get a red spoiler, not the blue one, and you have to go back and do it all over again…and again…and again…

No one on here is asking “How do I do this?” It’s all “I can’t do this.”

I think it’s funny you said that because in my personal opinion that’s exactly the difference between the official forums and the reddit community. Not only are there far fewer complainers on reddit but those who do complain do it in a more proactive way: they try to find solutions to their problems for example how to speed up the mastery- “grind” or find strategies to the tougher challences this x-pac has to offer etc…etc.. they actually try to tackle the stuff that annoys them.

The complainers on the this forum on the other hand almost feel like they want to be annoyed and enjoy being unsatisfied so they can keep complaining. They kick back and tell Anet to cater to their every wish instead of adapting to the different environment (in a gameplay sense not in a geographical sense) being offered by HoT.

Of course there are some posters who criticize and review their own experience in a more constructive way but unfortunately most are just whining.

Or its different point of view. I personally enjoy HOT as it is: I do agree that the elite specs cost to much, everything else however, is pretty nice, for me. Thats just my opinion of course. But, most of the players ive talked to seem to agree.

The forums arent a large part of the game, they are a minority, at least in my experience(with several other MMOs), and often the most vocal. RDDT is a different story of course, far more people over there, which is a good thing.

See? You’re making the same mistake again. You don’t even try to adapt. In the end it’s a two-way street. Yes, Anet needs to fix and improve some stuff to find a good middle ground (and they already started doing it. See changes to story gating) but I think the players also need to bemore flexible in how to tackle challenges. Especially since the HoT-experience is quite different than the one the core-maps offer.

But this kind of incessant whining being displayed on the forums since the last few days from people who at the first sign of challenge flip tables and throw their hands in the air is just getting pathetic to be honest.

And I think that’s what the OP was getting at when he/she said “life is more enjoyable when you rise to the challenge”. Be more flexible and try to find ways making currently unenjoyable things enjoyable for you on your own. Don’t just wait until a better HoT drops out of the sky.

I probably wont play GW2 anymore after all this. That makes me sad cause I enjoyed the game so much. But Anet isnt going to improve if we dont complain about stuff.

I have 100% map completion on my Necro, I would love if it only costed 200 HPs, it would mean I could avoid the new zones unless I wanted to see the story.

The part where they forced us to do the new zones was a mistake, it should be a choice not a necessity. Hell if I was in charge I would have made it possible to lvl while using your elite spec, rather then gate it behind all other specs being maxed.

Roughly 200 lvls needed per elite unlocked i think was the last figure i seen calculated.

Now take those 200 lvls and multiply that by 12 (I have 13 toons with a total between them of 400 pts) gives 2400 WvW levels I would need to get to open up the lines. Now figure in my current rank of ~2300 after 2-3 years. I figure you have the gist of the problem by now….

A challenge is a difficult encounter that requires skill to overcome.

I have yet to see one of those in an mmo that wasnt in some sort of pvp.

Most mmos give you are gear checks, number checks, level checks…. etc…. the challenge doesnt come from teh content but by the hoops they make you jump through to get past it.

I am not going to try and make something unfun into fun. I will load up a game that is fun from the get go.

GW2 used to be that, a long time ago.

Rising to a challenge isnt a good thing when the challenge is in leveling arbitary systems designed by people trying to stretch out content.

I don’t understand why people are upset either, I got my elite spec fully unlocked early Sunday and didn’t start playing until late Friday evening and had all the Masteries required for story on Saturday.

Its literally opening weekend and people are saying because they didn’t get something instantly its suddenly a “grind.” Everything I did to get my Masteries and Elite Spec was new content – no repetition of events or areas – just exploring and the Story.

The expansion is beautiful, the mobs are fun to fight, the maps are huge with so mmany hidden fun bits, the meta events are well designed and the story was pretty good too. Clearly a lot of work has gone into it and people are too busy obsessing over not having access to a GM trait instantly that they are missing the fun.

If this is how people react to all the work put in I hate to imagine how the devs are feeling – because it isn’t a fair representation of what we got… Mob mentality or just too much hand holding in the past? And people who say “you only are having fun because you played the game more” are basicly saying “you have fun the more you play” (‘less is more’ only works for makeup).

Yes you have to learn the zone. You have to learn where to go. You gave up too fast. No one’s fault but yours.

Everyone is so used to following a star in other games to get a place to talk to an NPC to get a wall of text to follow an arrow to another star, they forgot how to explore, how to think, how to solve puzzles.

The new zone isn’t that hard to figure out and it doesnt’ take that long to figure out, but if you give up at the first sign of trouble, there’s not much I can tell you.

Oh look, another one who thinks the problem is that people didn’t get insta access to elite specs. Seriously can you read the complaints before posting first?

Virtually every complaint I have read regarding elite spec cost of 400 pts is complaining about the steepness of it and the need for it to be reduced, NOT ELIMINATED but reduced so that people can obtain then in reasonable time (especially those of us, and there are many, who dont PVE)

hell i even threw in some napkin maths 4 or 5 posts above yours to give some idea of the issue and still you couldn’t understand it…..

What really disappoints me.

Yes, but you’re ignoring the fast that many MANY people have world complete and those people already have over 200 points. I was halfway to my elite specialization on five characters.

If they lowered the cost significantly I’d have had it in a day. And that’s bad for the game, not good for the game.

Because there needs to be some feeling of progression. It’s one of the biggest complaints about this game prior to the patch.

Anet doesn’t make decisions about a few people. They make decisions about the game as a whole.

The expansion came out three days ago. You still have enough time to collect your hero points within reasonable time.

Having your elite spec sooner is not bad for the game.

“Working hard” doesn’t deserve a dime from me. Dev’s are not owed a kitten thing. Especially from players that are reasonably upset.

GW2 HoT is basically B2G (Buy 2 Grind). It’s not something I want my hard earned money to support. If they decide to make Hero Points more reasonable, finish the other content, then I might be willing to spend money.

You obviously don’t know what grind is. Especially in mmo’s. The mastery system is gated but its progression, just think of it as leveling up in a new expansion and it makes sense and isn’t that bad. They even said its their form of progression. Also if you beat the game in a few days b/c of no grind you would probably complain about that too.

Did you by any chance read that forum topic with somewhere near 2k responses? Players know how to do it, and that is what is disappointing them: you have to grind, period.

People want to play their elite specs, not grind for days/weeks/months on end on specs they have played for the last three years to unlock them.

Then play the kitten game. I’m already fully Berserkered out after two days of game time. It’s not hard if you’re not lazy. Stop whining and go play a single player game then.

I have played the game, been EOTM farming, 20 hours and only got 75 hero points, and guess what, it was a grind, I tried, and I mean tried to do the new PVE zone but after already hating PVE and then falling off the edge, and not knowing where anything is I rage left that zone.

It’s much more fun to actually learn the zone.

You don’t understand, I DO NOT want to play that zone, I don’t do open world PVE, and that hasn’t changed. I do PVP, WVW and fractals almost exclusively. I hate map completion nonsense and don’t want to grind through it even once, and to do it for each character? That is nonsense.

so you think a year or 2 is reasonable time to unlock a specialisation on a dozen characters?

That would mean one to two months per character. Yes, that sounds right to me. Keep in mind when you gather hero points on PvE maps it’s going to be even faster.

Then that’s fine. If you don’t play that zone, don’t play it. But this game consists of PvE, WvW and SPvP. PvE is a HUGE part of this game. THis game wasn’t sold on WvW alone. So if you are choosing to ignore a part of the game, and you have a way to get it playing the part of the game you like, there’s not much anyone can do about it.

It’s like going to an amusement park and only liking shows and not liking rides. Of course you’ll complain. You don’t like what the park is offering.

But they’re not going to make it so that it’s so easy to get it in WvW that people have to flock there to get it, because that would kitten off the PvEers.

That is what Vayne seems to think.

Maybe they should lock the specs behind doing an excessive amount of whatever content he enjoys playing the least, and see who is complaining then.

That is a cheap mischaracterisation, the people complaining are saying off the bat “I will not do PvE” and they need to understand that comes with a downside. Demanding that their particular choice of ignoring PvE should some how not have any downside when just a few hours gliding around would solve their problems is just silly.
