What to do meantime besides Personal Story?

I find myself in HoT not rushing through the personal story but rather settling back and exploring the zone as fully as possible. But I notice in chat that there’s always groups talking about doing events that I’ve not been made aware of. Unfortunately, I don’t get a sense of what it is they’re doing and it always seems they’re halfway through it and no one wants to take time to answer me about how I can help. In Verdant Brink, I know it’s the daytime prep for supplying the camps and then at night it’s defending everything until the choppers come and then fighting the Matriarch. But Auric Basin meta-event(s) seem a bit harder to follow. And I’m too new to Tangled Depths and the masteries yet to get into that zone’s events. Any guides or references would be helpful.

You might try wiki to get the basic background information on each map and its events. For example here is Auric Basin.

I was also late to the party. The Wiki did help a bit, but I wanted to experience the events first-hand. I would strongly encourage you to do the following:
1. Explore the maps as much as possible, so you can have a good idea of their layout. This is essential, since the new maps are definitely quite a bit more complicated than core Tyria.
2. Open up this site: http://www.timers.moongate.pl/
3. Go to a map of your choosing at the beginning of the initial phase (Pillars in AB, Help the Outposts in TD).
4. Do an event chain you haven’t done. Say in map chat you are doing it. Tag up (even a mentor tag will work, it will still let people know you are actually doing the events). Taxi people in.
A common criticism of HoT, and one I completely agree with, is that since it’s all timer-based, you have to be at the right time in the right place to enjoy the kind of content you want, but this has worked for me
My guild runs events in all the zones from time to time. Having someone that knows the stuff to show you is the best way to learn in my opinion.

Usually you can just go to a commander tag on the map and follow them.
In Tangled Depths you will want to play it A LOT just to get a feel for the zone and know your way around. At least do an hp train because they will most likely take you through the zone AND get you the most important waypoints. That zone is really crucial to have waypoints for. Even at that there are still so many shortcuts that I’m finding here and there in the zone in little cracks in the wall that are partially hidden that make a world of difference.
Auric Basin is an easier one to do but it’s sometimes difficult finding a map where people are actually doing all of the pylon events.
Verdant Brink is kind of exhausting to do the meta for because it’s a long process of completing events, then waiting for nighttime and defending camps/running pact supplies/then finally traversing through the canopies to kill bosses. Not my favorite other than the wyvern bosses which are great fights to participate in. Especially Patriarch.
Dragon Stand I think is my favorite meta though. It’s really rewarding to go through this hour long process of fighting waves of mobs and then having one mostly singular end boss to fight instead of having 4 vines that don’t really fight back, or 5 mini bosses that you may or may not have enough people for, or a chak gherent that although isn’t a terrible fight is incredibly annoying and usually unsuccessful unless you have a lot of people communicating and working together.
I would honestly start off with the Dragon Stand event if you haven’t done it yet. There’s pretty much always a group doing it when it resets in LFG and it’s one of the more satisfying metas imo. (Aside from the fact that it’s on a timer and you don’t have an endless amount of time to explore the zone, even if you defeat Mordremoth.)

Hi! I’m a new player as of 2016. The events take some practice before you figure out what’s going on and players are often too busy running the events to take the time to talk you through it.
What worked best for me was to just go out and explore. In time, you not only start to figure out how to navigate the maps, but you run across the same events repeatedly until you become familiar with how they work and where they fit in to the story.
Alternatively, if you’re already done exploring a zone or if you just want to get in on the events from the outset, look for players running commander tags. You can just follow them around and experience the events that way. Players tend to flock to these tags, so you should be able to handle whatever comes your way.
Feel free to add me as a friend and hit me up in game. I love running around in the jungle doing events, and it’s always more fun if you bring people!
You know, now that I think about it, I finally got past the learning curve in TD. After months and months of getting lost. Finally.
But yes, if you want to unlock all ascended story backpacks, AB ascended backpack, and Hivemaster for TD, you pretty much have to grind. I completed the personal story for 9 different classes and got DS fully explored for all 9. After that, I got enough HPs for them to get specialization classes. Then I completed the AB backpiece collection and Hivemaster.
And finally, after all THAT, now I’m working on the rest of the specialization collections and the last story backpiece while trying to get enough map currency so I can unlock all the Machined collections.
^That’s what I’ve been working towards for the last few months. There’s not much new content for you todo if you’ve done everything once, but HoT expansion is all about doing and re-doing timed events. It’s about farming to get your stuff, and it’s a great timesink if you think it’s worthwhile
edit: this whole repeatable stuff makes getting mastery xp really easy. if you have the patience for it, try to get gold in all the adventures too :P
