Hi Folks,

I have had GW2 since beta, and am thinking about upgrading to HoT.

I remember when the expansion pricing was first announced, there was something of a firestorm on these forums from those who owned the original game about the lack of an extra character slot in the basic HoT package.

There was an ANET announcement (which I cant find because the search function doesn’t work), about existing players getting an extra slot if they bought HoT. As far as I can see from the GW2 website, HoT will cost 45 euros, but HoT with a slot (and a load of other stuff I dont want) will cost 75 euros.
Is this correct? I want to buy HoT + 1 slot, but am not prepared to pay 30euros for the extra slot.

Do I not get an extra character with the basic package if I already have GW2? If not, I guess it will have to be basic package and a 800 gems character from Black Lion.

Existing players can no longer get the free character slot as it was for pre-purchases only. You can only get this with the deluxe and $100 package.

If you ever plan to spend real money on gems, I suggest going with the $100 package.

If you plan on buying anything in the gem store (and most of us do) I personally think the HoT option with the 4k gems is the best deal. It’s the most expensive however it is going to save you in the long run on bank and bag expansions that you are inevitably going to buy. (250 limit of each crafting component is torture by itself let alone the minimal bank tabs you start with.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Basic + Black Lion will have to be the way then.

So much for ANET actually caring about those who have supported them for years.

To be honest I’d recommend holding off on HoT at the moment. The New Hot Area is currently very dead forcing you to taxi onto the “meta” server in order to get anything done. If you’re a WvW player like myself I ‘d say avoid buying HoT as you get the new Deserted Borderlands maps already and With each “update” this mode just get shafted farther and deeper than it already is. The Raids can be fun but unless you are in a guild who Raids your odds of getting past the first boss are quite bad. (The Rewards are nothing to be desired anyway) Over all It’s just not worth it A-net has made a beautiful game but has been killing it for nothing other than greed and the need to appease there shareholders. I don’t know what you play GW2 for but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I’ll answer to the best of my knowledge. Have a good one!

The HoT area is still very much populated. It’s just that there’s more maps being created and spreading players out than necessary. The problem with waiting though is that a lot of the maps do rely on there being people. If you wait, you’ll run into problems where you will struggle to find people to do anything at all.

I would strongly recommend waiting a while to buy it. I pre purchased HoT and have been regretting it since the expansion went live. At this point I’m just playing other games and waiting a couple months to see how everything shakes out, but if by that point some of the more glaring issues aren’t resolved I won’t be coming back. /shrug

Some of us are still having a ball with HoT. Since my focus has always been open world content (as opposed to say dungeons, fractals or PvP) and since I like a bit of challenge, HoT fills that need admirably.

There are people who have different needs obviously who aren’t as happy.

As for Anet taking care of it’s veteran players, we could have a very long conversation about that. A single character slot, one way or the other doesn’t really tell the story in my opinion.

Put it this way. I feel for the money I spent combined between Guild Wars 2 and HoT, I got more than enough content for my money.

If you were here for Season 1 and for the Living Story for example, you would have gotten that content for free. People buying HoT now either have to pay for it, or don’t get to see it at all, as in the case of Season 1.

I enjoyed the hell out of some of that content.

Sounds like you’ve made up your mind, OP. In case you’re still thinking, and in case any others will read this in the process of making up their own minds, here are my conclusions as an outsider who has done some research.

  • Base version ($50): people kind of have to make up their own minds about whether what comes with HoT is worth $50. This includes the Revenant, Elite Specs, 4 zones, some meta events, exploration, raids, some skins, adventures, gliding, etc. Can’t really help anyone there. Some will think this is well worth it, some won’t.
  • Deluxe version ($75): this is the base version with a character slot (value $10), and some virtual gewgaws (miniature, glider skin, guild hall decoration and a finisher). My take is that this is $10-$15 higher than it ought to be — but then I see little to no value in the gewgaws, despite what they might sell for individually.
  • Ultimate version ($100): deluxe plus $50 worth of gems. If you don’t value the gewgaws and either have a slot or can get one via gold, then $50 for $50 worth of gems is not a “great deal.” If you really want the gewgaws and the c. slot and are ready to pull the trigger on the Deluxe, then an extra $25 for $50 worth of gems is a good deal, provided you will use them and have the discretionary income.

Enjoy and good luck.

Option 1: Buy the “basic” HoT from Amazon, way cheaper than the ANet store, and use the money you save to buy gems towards that extra char slot. Or keep the money you save and earn in-game gold to exchange for gems and that slot.

Option 2: Wait a month or two and then go for option 1, but with a bigger saving.

Incidentally, the “free char slot” caused loads of confusion, partly because of the bad wording of the offer and partly because folks got it confused with the extra slot that comes with the deluxe version. The free slot required you to pre-order HoT and to have registered a copy of the core game before a certain date so that offer ended on HoT launch day. That was the only nod to “veteran” players.

Lol. I personally find 100 Euros ridiculous to pay, notwithstanding 44€ for the standard edition but that part was discussed to death and beyond.

If you want HoT asasp, I’d go with the standard version if you don’t need the extra character slot right now and don’t plan to bother much with the cash shop. Check the official retailers for the cheapest offer. If not for the character slots, I’d actually never be tempted to check the in-game store but as I don’t want to delete my current characters, I’ll bite in the bitter apple. So in that regard, the $100 edition was never an option for me.
