Ok, so when there’s a party to be made for something bigger one of the main professions to get is the one with most whirl finishers.

… ok, bad joke.

Blast finisher supremacy aside i belive it’s time for a change for whirls. Right now we got random projectile that is all about small RNG of it getting tossed at direction of your target or not, unless you’re literally standing inside of the target.

So how about this – let’s make whirls apply their results to anything that’s actually in range of the actual spin? No random bolts, just weapon itself taking on property of the field and following simple logic – if it lands, and whirl is performed on your/ally’s combo field it applies the result to target.

I think with this whirls could actually become a meaningful part of the gameplay that is considered by players, and not just result of random activation of whirl on a combo field, because who cares, it’s just a whirl…

Sounds good to me, anything to make them less dependant on perfect positioning. I think the thief elite daggerstorm might be worth a look too, it hits everything writhing a certain range too iirc

I agree on whirl finishers not being too functional… but the solution proposed kinda goes against positioning which was a thing when the game was designed… it looked good back then, I totally feel your point tho … the chances for them to hit something are rare vs small single mobs … on big ones they are better and on a crowd even more (designed for group fights) even tho… at least damage could be boosted a bit imo.

gawdyes, anything. In the very least, it should be whipping out a huge number of bolts, somewhere in the 8 or 16 range, so at least it more likely guarantees a nearby target gets hit, and close ones get punished more.

Many alts; handle it!

I play DH with GS. The whirl is awesome, when fighting one mob or closely grouped mobs. If it is one mob stand inside it, a you said. Works really well on large mobs. If you are inside the mob hit box, every hit and projectile will hit the mob. For smaller mobs, most will hit. So it is pretty huge burst dps.

I don’t see it being that much of a pain to just stand inside the hit box.

I will say I am not familiar how other classes whirls work. Not sure if that would work for others.

You’re talking about the GS 2 skill, which is a whirling attack and a whirl finisher. What you described above is the whiling attack part, not the finisher part. The attack is good at hitting anything close by.

However, if you stand in a field (like the one made by GS 4), you’ll see “Condition Removed” spam a zillion times over your heard. That’s the finisher part. Bolts fly away from you to remove conditions because you’re standing in a light field. If you were in another field though, such as a fire field, you’d have flaming bolts shooting away from you, bolts with a very low chance of hitting anything worth hitting. And that’s what this thread is about.

They’d probably have to rebalance most of the whirl skills in the game if they did something like this, as most of them create multiple whirl finishers in a relatively short period of time. Getting 8 stacks of Burning from a Whirl + Fire Field in a couple of seconds’ time would be a bit much, especially since it’d be an AoE that would hit everything in the vicinity.

Not to say that I’m against the idea, just that it might be pretty complicated, at least if they went this direction.

Thank you, Ceesa for taking your time to explain the difference between how this kind of combo work! Not everybody know how these combos might work and sometime it can be very random which field that will be the triggering field for whirls.

According to wiki there is a chance that those bolts will hit if a target have been selected. Is there any indication that this is true? I can not say for sure when I first Mace on Revenant to create a fire field and then switch to Swords Precision Strike (whirl) that my target are taking more damage then usual from those fire bolts. When those bolts are firing it is also for a very short time, so it looks like they aren’t much worth to invest time to get working during a fight. As for light field (from Venteri’s table; Solace) where you get condition cleans, it seem to have longer duration and do some work, but at the same time it is eating my energy so I can not keep that light field up for a long time to make a combo.

Well to be fair if you want quite a few stacks of burning then thief pistol #1 from stealth off a fire field will get you quite a few in a jiffy.

But it is true some sort of balancing would have to take place. Maybe making the condies last 1/2s or something in case of damaging ones. They fixed the non round second ticks so it ticks for only part of the full damage when it’s less then a second. Still whirl being useful inside target hitbox or completely useless in other case is kinda strange to me.

As for profession forums – well that be amusing since it’s a general game mechanic, not profession exclusive one. That’s why the post here (i doubt anyone reads the original game’s forum).

Maybe it’s just me, but the few whirl bolts that do come out, just crashland into the ground. And I can make them go right up into the sky by literally aiming my character towards it.
I think whirl finishers should be more reliable, effective and target stuff better!

the whirl projectiles should aim at enemies / allies automatically !

then those could be useful and make some underused whirl attacks actually strong especially if all projectiles hit 1 enemy in perfect situations

cause right now basically noone uses skills with whirl finisher for the whirlcombo…
