So I know Colin said that it won’t happen because people would break out of the map… but don’t people already do that?
Anyways on a more serious note, the breaking can be fixed very easily. Just like underwater has it’s currents so does the sky and it’s winds. Just like we can’t break though underwater maps (mesmer’s this doesn’t include you) we shouldn’t be able to break though air maps.
I don’t really see an issue here. The system is already in the game.
It’s not just breaking out of the map, it’s also related to making jumping puzzles and vistas way more easy. The old content just isn’t designed with gliding in mind.
Although I do remember Colin saying in an interview that they may add gliding to more areas in the future (whether that means gliding in areas currently in the game or gliding in areas that are added after HoT is something I don’t know).
It sounds like they’re restricting it because it would break many of the games jumping puzzles and take the challenge out of reaching some vistas and points of interest.
The old maps just weren’t built for exploring vertically outside of going to certain places, and those places are usually involved in some sort of challenge.
In old Map Gliders only should be flying downhill. Without any wind beams they don’t move up. So flying from the highest point downhill only no jumping puzzle or something is infected. ANet could specify how fast gilders falling down on differ maps.
Second is Map breakout. We remember when swimming inside water to far out. Instead of switching yours to the next map the Game pulls you back. So hang glider could be turned arround 180 degress if coming to the map border. Same collision program as checking if your charakter reaches the map border. That is not far difficult to program a wind steam arround all map border to turn your gilder arround.
But we know ANet they won’t do that even if it’s not so difficult to do. They even should rework all old maps for expansion pack so adding this little piece would not be as much.
