Q:

A majority of the items, especially the most popular and useful are only available for a few days and they are taken off again. Then they come back and disappear again. Why not just leave all the gem store items on there? When I want to add a certain skin to complete my characters design, I find that the skin isn’t available anymore. And when I finally save up enough money for something on the gem store, it’s taken down.

What is the purpose behind this? You would think there would be more profit from items left up there than only brought out once in awhile.

A:

Scarcity makes people purchase, even if it’s artificial scarcity.

If people know that luxury item X will be in the store forever and ever then they’ll frequently put off purchasing. There’s no rush because it will always be there. Since something better may come along they figure they might as well wait. If people know that item X is going to leave then it pushes them to decide to get it now as they’ll won’t be able to get it later.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I’m not sure what job you have that you need to save 10$ to buy some skin. Unless you live in a third world country.

If you mean you can’t save enough in game gold to buy gem, that’s precisely the point. Better pull out that credit card…

Makes sense, but it’s too bad you can’t design your character the way you want to, when you want to, and when you’ve done the work for it.

There’s another reason, having to do with gold-to-gems. If an item is available indefinitely, some players might farm the gold to buy gems to get it. If it’s there for a short time, some of those players might not be able to farm the gold in time. If they still want the item, they’d have to use real money. While Anet makes money either way, getting cash out of players normally inclined to buy gems with gold would be a plus.

I think the most popular and useful items are always available; Character Slots, Bank Slots, Bag Slots, x-O-Matics, etc.

Popular cosmetic items do come and go; probably what makes many of them so popular; their limited purchase windows.

The basics tend to stay. Yah. It’s the cosmetics that usually are removed.

That is so stupid… Terrible business sense.

They have lost so much money from me because i don’t have it when they decide its time to dump out items i like, so they miss out…

Take the Bandit Sniper Costume, i’d love to have purchased it, but they tack on a heap of useless items to pad out the price, so they lose 700 gems worth of money because i refuse to pay 2000 gems, Sorry no deal…

Another instance the “Exclusive” Wizard Hat i’d love to buy but they wont add to their Cash shop so no money from me…

Whatever Business Anet thinks its running they are losing a crap load more due to it.

Actually – you can buy the gems when you have money and spend them later. I usually do that, and I suppose many others might. Then I only spend those when they throw something that I find it’s worth spending gems on.

True – they may be loosing your money but maybe overall they make more out of other people. It’s not like this sort of marketing tactic is anything new.

Actually it is basic Marketing 101 — make it seem like it’s a now or maybe never again to cause more to buy ASAP. Its done in real life too and it works, why do you think every marketer keeps doing it? Why do you think things get put on “clearance” and then the next you go in the store it’s back at regular price with maybe only a little change in the packaging? Again it is very basic Marketing 101. It was part of one of the first marketing classes I took when I got my degree in Marketing/Management. I graduated with honours by the way, the last semester I took 5 classes to finish the degree before I went into the Army and got all A’s. Yes I am a little proud of the work I did in college.

I doubt very much that they are losing money due to this. It has been shown, time and again, to be an effective tool for driving revenue beyond just this one game. It costs them essentially nothing in terms of resources while allowing them to influence revenue flow as if they were introducing new gemstore content without the cost associated with producing said content.

It’s not a consumer friendly move and I can sympathise with you there. But if it wasn’t working, ANet wouldn’t be continuing the practice for 3 years; the timer causes panic buying by many players.
Still, playing that tactic caused ANet to lose a hook on me. Had they held one of the items in the march sale for more than 1 day, I wouldn’t have had the spare gems (all from converted gold) to buy the Infinite Continue Coin, in which case I would have whipped out my card.

A surprising number of people have jobs and bills that can make that extra $10 for something fluffy and shiny hard to scrape up. Credit cards are not the solution in that case.
