Will there be a better HOT deal?
Nope. Kitten it up, kitten.
Also hope is a first step on the road to disappointment.

Yes, there will be a better deal . . . about a year or two down the road when they’re about to issue a new expansion or similar product. As far as in the near future?
What Rainbow said. Can you imagine if they offered a discount so soon after taking money from the pre-orders?
If you think the community is negative now, then watch what would happen if ANet gave a discount after the fact. It would make the eruption of Mount Vesuvius look like campfire marshmallow roast.

From ArenaNet, you won’t find a better deal for quite a while, like 6-12 months at the very least. They’ll either lower the price or offer a “heroic” edition.
From other retailers, you can already find a better deal (I’ve seen up to ~20% off). Sales popup every once in a while.
Depending on how ArenaNet ends up marketing the game from now on, the price of the game may never actually change again. As time passes, the game may get cheaper, but you’ll have to pay extra for any living story episodes you’ve missed. With the next expansion, new players will get HoT for free, but all those missed episodes are basically going to cost the price of HoT.
If you’re a veteran player, the best deal you’re likely going to find within the next ~18 months is pre-purchasing the game on sale. You’ll get a free $10 character slot and a ~$10 discount. The game will likely never go below $20 off since there’ll just be another expansion to reset the cycle.
yea but the memory is still fresh in my mind where anet decided to throw out $10 sales of gw2 vanilla and then kitten all the buyers by coming out with expac deals that includes the vanilla…
and now with the rumour of the free core game, i wonder what in the kitten is their marketing department doing? the packages are so complicated that i don’t even know if i am getting a good deal or not.

I may just be a blind fanboy and corporate shill, but I’d suggest waiting to see what they actually announce before assuming they’re all idiots based on a single, detail-free tweet.

The only time companies lower the price of an expac near launch is if sales are tanking. They know they can expect bad press & outrage, so it would only happen as a last ditch effort.
The more likely scenario is to see retailers discount prices a few months later (as sales drop from their peak volumes) and ANet waiting a year or longer to offer minor discounts for short periods of time.
tl;dr ANet, like any decent business, expects people to pay a premium for new shinies.
I don’t think it’s complicated, at least not based on what Anet sell. You can’t get the base game any more, just HoT and you get either the standard, deluxe (with some novelty items) or ultimate (with novelty items and cheap gems). If the rumors are true there will also be a free trial version, but if they’re true it’s going to be heavily restricted.
Where it does get complicated is with other retailers still selling the base game (with a wide variety of prices), I’m not sure if all new accounts from now on get HoT or if you’d have to buy it separately.

What are the odds that anet will come out with a better deal to entice more potential customers to splash the cash as we near the HOT release?
I am hopeful that there will be one since anet has a track record of coming out with very good deals for newcomers but completely kittening existing players.
Somewhere between 0% and 0%. I have never seen a game drop it’s price tag before release. Now I do expect a price drop sometime after release, like maybe dropping a few bucks off for the black friday/christmas sells. That’s a strong maybe though.
You can always wait till the next expansion is scheduled for release in say 3 years. I’m sure if you judge by the current example you will get it for free then!
£20 is what this “expansion” should be priced at, I aint paying much more than that.
23rd October release date and still not much content has been shown to us to justify the £35 they currently are asking for.
Add on top that WvW will continue to be neglected, and the current posts claiming to be looking at it is, if you ask me, a ploy to get some WvW players to buy the game. Sorry but you simply do not deserve my money Anet, not any more!

Before release? No chance. The earliest you can expect one is December.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

For the UK, keep an eye on Amazon – they went down to £23 a month ago (unfortunately back to full price now). It’s the only reason I pre-purchased.

That’s why I bought the ultimate edition, I buy gems anyway so it’s like I got £42 of gems in one go and the deluxe edition for £37, which is about what I expected to pay.

There will be plenty of places doing it at a discount once the game has been released if you want to wait.
No.
…. 15char
Zero chance that they’ll drop the price before Christmas, 100% chance that they’ll drop the price before Christmas of next year, by how much, that’s debatable. Buy it at $50 or wait, the deal on the table now is the best deal you’ll be getting for a while.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”
So any chance this going FTP as well say in the next 12-24 months? I came to GW2 late and still have a lot of content to explore, so I’m not really seeing the need to purchase this now.
Nope. They (rather stupidly) believe an xpack with a tiny amount of content compared to what their competition offers with xpacks is somehow worth the same price as the competition. And it’s unlikely they’ll pull their heads out of their own kitten to fix their error any time soon.
Plenty of online retailers will have discount codes to get more of the key price.
You can already get the game £10 cheaper today on many sites.
