I was thinking since they made the game free why not give a discount for heart of thorns to those who paid for the game

The price tag on hot IS the price of the expansion. Core game has nothing to do with it. When the next expansion comes out it will also include hot and core game in it.

The price is extremely fair for a game that requires no monthly fee.

Will next expansion be the price of hot + new expansion or jus new expansion pack price

The second expansion will include the core game and HoT plus the new expansion for the cost of the new expansion. It will probably be $50 again.

If you want to avoid paying for each expansion as it releases, wait for about a decade and then come back to the game. At that point you will be able to pick up the core game and the previous 3 or so expansions for about $50.

In three years when the next expansion is due to come out, you can will get HoT for free. See you then.

If you factor in the living story and the monetary value of gems, HoT will never reduce in price. If you don’t buy HoT, you won’t be given the chance to unlock the living story for free. Unlocking those missed seasons next expansion could easily cost around the same price as buying HoT right now.

Their new model is to simply make it easier for new players to start the game. The total cost will end up remaining roughly the same in comparison to an active player that purchases each expansion.

ArenaNet probably won’t offer a discount for about 6 months. It might not even be a discount but another “heroic” edition. It’ll only be like $10 off however, or double that in gem store items, so if you see the monetary value in gems, a veteran player should pre-purchase for the free slot. Through other retailers however, you can already find 10-20% discounts once in a while, which is the best deal you’ll likely see for the remainder of this expansion’s cycle, if you factor in the free slot.

Healix actually has is right: by buying HoT now, you will actually save money in the long run by being able to unlock LWS for free as is comes out simply by loggin in. (I’m thinking you’ll have to own HoT for this to happen since LW stuff will all be tied to the new area for a while). also, if you buy a higher tier version of HoT, you’ll get a a set of gems at a discounted price, which is something as anet has never before offered a discount on gems.

Basically what I’m saying is, buy HoT now and you’ll be able to circumvent a lot of hidden costs that might arise for you later down the line.
