Now I just watched an Interview with Colin talking about HoT. He had some really cool information that gets me excited but he said something that really worried me. He said that the demo wasn’t even ready for Pax. Now I know it could be nothing, but it gives me cold flashbacks of the first trailer of GW2 back in 2009. Don’t tell me I’m going to have to wait 2 years for this expansion!
My guess was marked for summer 2015. Maybe spring if we are lucky. But now I’m not so sure. Please Anet. Don’t make us wait a year!
I doubt it’ll be a long wait. It’s already been said that the story in Heart of Thorns carries on directly from the end of the last living story episode, and I can’t see them to going as long as a year with no expansion and no living story.
Christmas is a good bet on release. They said a beta is coming out for the expansion but no time for when it will start. I’m sure we will get filler content between now and the release of HoT.

Sorry, but it’ll release much sooner than that, end of April to sometime in May is a more realistic release date.
The reason for this is that since HoT is supposed to carry on from living story season 2, season 3 won’t start until after HoT is released. The longest living story gap was around 4 months, if they wait any longer than that they risk the player base losing interest in the game due to the lack of content in what is their biggest selling point, the living story.

I’m pretty certain he didn’t make up september at the moment of the question. He read it from his screen. He’s eyes where focused on the screen, and it was very clear that he was reading something loud when he said september. Maybe the head office (the shop is a chain, it has shops in a lot of cities) had some date guess inserted on the computer already. But he definitely read it from his screen.
Its your right to take this with a grain of salt, but for me now, the game has a 60% chance to launch in september. 40% still open for another date (may, june, july, later year).

You got it there, if it’s anything like ‘Game’ here in the UK, HQ send the stores an email with the release dates and expected delivery dates ahead of time that change as time goes on.

If we remove ‘event’ living stories from the list (like gold pavilion, wintersday, halloween, wvw season), then it has been 4 months or more we didn’t get living story ‘episodes’.
Given the expansion hype is there now and sticky, I think Anet wouldn’t mind risking a 5 month period downtime. They will however probably add some mini living stories. Perhaps the Ls team will keep us busy with a stand alone LS that doens’t impact mordremoth. After all LS is seperate team. Maybe SAB will see it’s comeback.
Launch, feature pack, all were released near augustus. It’s a date Anet likes.

i worry about as well. i only will wait until 29/08/15. after that i wont play this game any more. its had been 2 and a half years already. if 3 year for 1 expansion that is not acceptable.

I did mention I thought a 4 month gap before the expansion sounded about right, which would be the end of April or sometime in May. Hype will only keep people interested for so long.
I don’t think they could make mini LS updates since the finale of season 2 ended on such a bombshell, if HoT takes place hours after season 2 lore wise then cramming in any kind of story between it would feel clunky and out of place. Even festivals would stick out like a sore thumb as it stands now.
The only thing they can realistically add to pass the time would be a WvW tournament which would buy them 6 weeks or so.

In fairness, there was no “plan” to release an expansion until they announced it so the players that have been here for 2.5 years are unlikely to quit because they have to wait a few months for an expansion that they weren’t expecting in the first place.
August 15 seems a strange cutoff date. Why not give them until August 28, which will be their third anniversary? To me that seems the most likely date for release. It’s of symbolic importance to ANet, and it gives them enough time to take in any beta feedback and actually make changes.
But then again, if impatience is your way of life, you probably aren’t really enjoying the game anyway. It’s more rewarding long term.

Darn, must be so rough getting 3 years of decent gaming for a one time payment of $60-120

My guess is that HoT will be out in 4 – 6 months, leaning towards the latter. Colin has stated that we’ll get a first playable look at HoT at PAX East, in 6 weeks time. After that, it goes into beta testing, which will likely run for another 8 – 12 weeks. Add in some time to fix bugs and do polishing (another 4 – 8 weeks), and it all adds up to HoT probably coming out around August or September. I’m guessing they will try for that because once October hits we’re into the Halloween/Wintersday period, and they probably want to give us a few months of pure HoT exploration first.

As nice as that would be, lore wise it wouldn’t work since they’ve stated that the expansion is set hours after the finale of season 2.
and because of that lions arch would be the only possible thing to add something new till the release of the expansion (maybe for the next 7+ month). its not connected to the story and timeline of living story 2 in a meaningful way, it would be a seperate event like wintersday or the bazaar. additional they could do it with little effort, for example collecting mats for rebuilding, a little like collecting the tokens for the election in cutthroat politics and they could stretch it over weeks.

This is an expansion, so a lot of development issues are already out of the way, such as engine for one. They don’t need to build everything from scratch this time around, so development will not take 2 years time. I’m expecting this at summer/early fall.
The playable version will be playable at the next PAX in a few weeks. Personally i think the product is very close to being finished..it’s just fine tuned now. I think it will get released on the 3rd anniversary of GW2 this year.

we actually funded the first two. there was a relief thingy where a sylvari lionguard would take donations and you would in return get a currency to spend on stuff.

Nahh im sorry to burst your bubble but that is definitely too soon for the release date especially since they just now showed a trailer, they are still working on content. The whole losing player base argument due to delayed release date is completely irrelevant, daily logins, gem store transactions and game purchases / download data prove the player base is growing. They will most likely release HoT towards the end of the year.
Around august sounds most realistic to me.
It will follow the same pattern sa GW2’s original release. Betas around april-may. Then 2 months of hype and then release.
Until then we will get some fluff, WvW tournament and a feature patch.
I really doubt that it will be released sooner than around August. Beta testing will start after the short pause that will be after Rezzed, so let’s say it starts in April. I seriously doubt that they would betatest it only for 2 months, in order to release it around june. August gives them more time and they will have an opportunity to release it on the 3. anniversary of the game.
