As someone who has been an inveterate beta tester, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t really care to beta test anymore. Too many experiences of writing bug reports only to see the bug still there when live were one nail in the coffin. The other nail was losing value, in the form of replay time, on a purchase — which led me to only want to beta games I was less interested in — which is its own problem.
I find I have zero interest in beta testing HoT. At this point, I’m not sure whether that means I’m looking forward to it going live, or just don’t care. I guess I’ll make up my mind on that when I know if HoT warrants the expenditure.

well said indigo, I feel the exact same way, been there, done that ….got killed by the tequatl bunny. I’m fine with waiting for everyone to sort things out and also have no interest in beta testing. – I’d rather wait for the bug and tears free update and for the expansion to go on sale. win/ win for me.

So you’re saying that the press invited to the beta aren’t veterans of the game themselves? That somehow being a LP’er or a streamer invalidates any veteran status you have?
And how do you know that if they have 102 spots (number divisible by 3 for WvW balance), that they aren’t just holding a few spots for the “press” and the rest are for WvW players?

why put it in bold letters on the front page if none of the prepurchasers can attend ?
that’s plain rude. funny, but rude!

How do you know that the streamer haven’t prepurchased for example?

if you REALLY want peace, you will have to make an effort to understand both sides, otherwise you are simply trying to win a debate, and well…that’s what us gray knights do, we win debates.
our sole purpose is to keep the balance, and win debates.
watch, come up with a winning argument, and I will be right there with you supporting you….but we aren’t there yet, sadly :*(

If they really wanted to test it they would replace eotm with new map for 24h.
And how many players would actually report bugs and glitches instead of just having fun on the new map?
How many players would be honest enough not to use possible exploits that haven’t been detected yet?Giving all p(l)ayers access to the map might actually do more harm than good.
And how many players reporter bugs during a “closed beta”? How many off selected players will actually report bugs when they are picked off from a guy that streams for profits?
What exploits, what harm? Eotm doesnt count to wvw score, how it can harm anything? I see youre 100% pve guy if you dont even know basic informations about wvw.. and more people means higher chances to identify such exploits you talking about so that we wont see them on release.
Logic is stronk on these forums.
Just like more players means a higher chance of there being bad apples among them…
And why do you assume I was referring to exploits that influence the WvW score?
I was thinking about bugs that could cause champions to die instantly, or respawn instantly, infinite WXP farming or NPCs buying items for more than they should: bugs that would allow those who use them to enrich themselves.

You know… you, either of you, can’t really prove that either side (having non-vet players only, having vet players only, having mix) is better than the other.
The only thing certain is, that there will be some that do report bugs/glitches/exploits, there will be some that keep silent about it (for w/e reason), and there some that won’t even look for them…
Being eager to join the beta-tests, probably means you fall in the latter of those three.
Unless you’re going to do some mass-scale social in-game experiment… arguing about it is pretty kitten pointless.
:P Amusing from the sidelines though.

May I ask you then how they could’ve worded it to be more clear?
Perhaps they should have mentioned that there will be other beta events that prepurchase doesn’t qualify for.
But I do find it funny that people can’t see the difference between Stress Test and Beta Weekend
And i find it funny how some think that a Stress Test event is not a beta event just because the word “beta” was omitted.
Well I can’t help but notice how the front page announcement doesn’t contain the word BETA nor the word WEEKEND.
Just because Anet is not calling this stress test a beta doesn’t make it any less of a beta.
They have an FAQ page that they link to, where it clearly explains what they mean with Beta Weekend Event.
…not. They have a faq where they explain how to get into one (prepurchase) and where they will happen (not decided yet) but nowhere they define what Beta Weekend Event is, how it is different from all other betas, or even mention that there are (or will be) other kinds of betas.

Hmm…I’m wondering…
Just because ArenaNet didn’t call this Stress Test a Weekend event, does that make it any less a Weekend event? I’m thinking it does! Lol.
Also, the FAQ includes this:
What are Beta Weekend Events and when will they take place?
Beta Weekend Events are selected weekends when everyone who pre-purchases the game is invited to test Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. BWEs may include new content or a repeat of content available in previous tests.
The Heart of Thorns Beta Weekend Events will be announced as we get closer to them.
So, I guess they do define what a BWE is.

you still don’t see the negative connotation though ? -
“That’s why they gave invitations to press people to deliver them as they see fit”
then the people that paid for the right to participate in those events aren’t fit ?again, this isn’t bothering ‘me’ – i hate to admit i have an urge to listen to a benny hill theme song as i try to find a peaceful place all parties can be happy with. i just want my old guildwars back
Except that nobody paid for participation in this stress test, it was even announced before the prepurchase started how people will be selected.
then you can agree that their timing was inappropriate ? they should have held those tests firsts before advertising the ability to purchase the right in said types of events.
A stress test is a type of beta event. A “good” company, is supposed to be a White Knight. Debating a stress test is not a beta, is a gray area.
Gray knights don’t trust each other, naturally.

Ok, so what I’m hearing is that, in good faith and so as not to offend anyone, Anet should not have advertised or allowed anyone other than prepurchasers into any form of testing after prepurchase went live. Also, Anet should should have used language that could not in any possible way be misconstrued or misinterpreted so as to avoid bad blood and confusion. Cool. I think perhaps the first point could be addressed in future development, but something about that request comes off as an unreasonable demand. To the second complaint on language, high powered lawyers work to meet this goal and still get challenged in court by their opposition. Again, I think the language and explanation surrounding Beta Weekend Event, coupled with the precedent set by events defined as Stress Tests in the past, should be able to be understood by a reasonable person. They could add language that clarifies what a Beta Weekend event is not in addition to what it is. Honestly, if it helps avoid this sort of issue going forward, they may just want to bite the bullet and do it.

again, the only issue as I see it, is that it’s a big bold announcement on their site, and in the login browser.
This can be construed as rubbing it in the faces of prepurchasers that are not allowed in.
I’m not a pre-purchaser, it’s just annoying to me, but i can’t take it like a ‘tease’ – i’d be way more upset if i had put faith in anet and the purchase. Fortunately i knew better this time around. lol

Of course they anounce it, it will be streamed by several people as far as I understand and there will be little those allowed in the stress test will see that we won’t so I’m very excited.

right, and it would have been more enjoyable and clear as a Press Stress Test Event.
Then when people ask why they were not allowed in, anet could have simply said they weren’t ready to show it to the general public, they are only showing what they want to be promoted.
Completely clear and understandable, less the head games and word play. The only thing the head games and word play show me personally is that they are insecure.

I’m confused. Where did ‘they’ or anyone announce that this Stress Test was exclusively for the press.
All I’ve seen is one person who is on YouTube that announced he got an invitation. If it is Press-Only, why don’t I see anything from Bog Otter, WoodenPotatoes, or….?
Maybe I’m just out of the loop, but one would think there would be threads, or videos, or something.

no where…..at this point it’s a cross reference to the same marketing strategy they did when gw2 was first released. It’s practically identical, i’m guessing if they continue down this path, you can predict the future of the expansion based on how gw2 was rolled out.
Tons of bugs, events completely revamped and eventually ignored because they couldn’t figure out a solution, then smothered in living stories to distract from problems. – that’s what we can ‘predictably’ expect for the next 1-2 years. I’m guessing within 6 months after release, there will be a nice sale of a tweaked expansion and quite possibly the optimal purchase time.

but now that I’ve agreed it’s just a rumor, you can’t use that argument because it would be a straw man based on a rumor lol
I’m establishing why anet isn’t being trusted and why players are not at fault for not buying into blind faith, and now the prepurchase white knights who like to call vets entitled, have been promoted to vets. They now bare the burden of entitlement ROFL!
o man, i love this debate stuff
who knows, maybe we might get a few gray knights out of this….there comes a point that a person stops believing in what others call good, and starts standing for what is right.

I get it people have issues with the clear use of the English language and can’t tell the difference between Stress Test and Beta Weekend, not everyone is an English language master I guess. Playing with words is always fun but the thing is the wording is perfectly clear.
I’m still waiting for answers to my other questions from someone who disagrees with their policy on this stress test:
How many players does such a server hold?
How many players pre-purchased the game?
The server obviously has a limited capacity so how should they’ve selected the participants?
Or you’d rather they invited everyone who pre-purchased the game and have massive queues and make sure nobody can play with their friends/guild mates to come to better conclusions over how the map plays?

What makes you think a stress test is a beta?
It’s a 4 hour test, to make sure that the server is adjusted to handle X number of people. It’s not a beta test, it’s a stress test. In all likelihood Anet needs very very few people for this type of test.

No Vayne, usually I agree with you, but this is the first real chance for WvW-rs to see this BL, stress test or not. Giving it to some streamer, who as of June 15 hit WvW rank 126, to dictate who gets in is just pitiful.

Indeed. I was looking at the heart of thorns FAQ, wasn’t even aware there was a separate prepurchase faq.
Ok, so what I’m hearing is that, in good faith and so as not to offend anyone, Anet should not have advertised or allowed anyone other than prepurchasers into any form of testing after prepurchase went live.
No. They should not have offered beta access as one of the purchase incentives, or made it clear that there will be betas prepurchase will not qualify for (and by saying “make it clear”, i mean “mentioned it outright”, not “let the more suspicious consumers infer it from wording”). And if they did offer it as one of the incentives, what they shouldn’t do is to make the very first beta after prepurchase launch be one that prepurchasers cannot participate in.
If, for example, they have said that there will be a limited access stress test, but also announced a beta weekend for prepurchasers, it would lessen the bad taste. If there was an info on the box, and the purchase webpage ( *Reminder: there will be other beta events this prepurchase does not qualify for) they would be in the clear as well.
They should have also made sure this info reached resellers, so that they would be able to put correct translations up, instead of getting caught in the same trap (for example, my country sole reseller info got translated into “access to all beta events”)
Also, if you really think that Anet marketing guys did not know that seeing the “access to all beta weekend events” info many people will skip over the “weekend” part, or not realize that it is an importand distinction, then you are really naive. Or think they are dangerously incompetent.

What is a veteran WvW player bringing more than a new player? Zerg tactics only. If blob vs blob is what you guys want the BL to be tested than i understand. But outside of that a veteran player would be the same as new player.

a private beta, should be private. if you want to do a promotion, be honest and say you invited the press to a stress test. Even make the announcement, “We are holding a press stress test so they can show you the things we are preparing for beta!!!”
“why can’t the rest of us get in!!” “Because we still need to do a little more work before letting the rest in, we limit their access to areas we are ready to show”
all sorts of speculation can be avoided with simple honesty.
unfortunately the front page doesn’t represent that idea…
it’s more like “Announcing the First World vs. World Borderlands Stress Test – and you can’t come BWaaaahahahahahahaha!!!”
Worst conspiracy theory ever. It’s not in their benefit, it’s not in our benefit. There’s no reason for them to do this by any of the reasons you provided because it lacks logic.
If anything they failed to explain it clear enough and that’s all it is. The rest of the arguments are just a product of pure boredom.

Just bad for those people who paid 100€ for the game and just getting nothing with BETA Events now like promised. Even a Stress test is important and on stress tests servers should come to their breaking limit, so if a server has normally 10.000 players at stress tests those tested with maybe 12.000 to 15.000 to see where is the max limit for it.
So many as possible people should play and join those event. Having only 5% players at those maps, it not really stressing servers in any way. And I don’t think they setup only one server with this map for testing ??

The question remains. How many people over all are being used in this stress test. To test WvW you only need 240 people. Anet is going to have to pick SOMEONE.
So who should they pick? No matter who they pick, they will have issues with people feeling they’re not picked.
At any rate, if you were Anet and you needed a few hundred people out of hundreds of thousands of prepurchases, how would you decide which hundreds get it?
Do you remember the complaining of people who didn’t get into betas. You’re right. This is the first look at the new WvW borderslands. Why does it matter who looks first? It’s a look, that’s all. It’s likely to change and evolve during beta anyway.
What do you say to the hundreds of thousands of veterans who don’t get in, if they did have some way to decide who it was?

A stress test is not a beta event. It’s a stress test. It’s four hours and it’s over. What we were guaranteed was access to beta weekends. The wording is extremely clear. What you’re saying is that you paid for dinner up front so you get free dessert and then they serve someone else coffee on the house and you say, I didn’t get coffee. You weren’t guaranteed coffee.
My guess is that the stress test requires far fewer people than a beta, and it’s not being set up to deal with everyone who’s preordered and putting all those people in would in fact not allow them to test it the way they need it.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Considering the whole ordeal here. I think. It’s time for closed betas again. No one needs to see the new borderlands just yet. People will complain about it anyway.
I think they should show less to the public. Only show the borderlands when they’re done. Not through any stream of a third party. It would also protect anyone who seemingly gets preferential treatments, because it would be closed beta and behind a NDA.

That’s not the point of the test. They aren’t doing this stress test to show anything off to the player base. They are doing a STRESS TEST to see how the server handles the stress of full player load in order to make adjustments. A totally new player is just as useful as a veteran to the test.

It’s a test map not a whole server. Maps do not have capacity for 10k players they have capacity for less than 200. So giving access to everyone who pre-purchased would create insane queues (unless only ~200 players pre-purchased)

I don’t think maps can hold ~900 players. More like 300, which would be 100v100v100 approximately.
Either way, I’m guessing there are more than 1000 pre-purchasers. Who gets left out, then?

And this is exactly what I’ve been asking for, on both threads on this subject, yet nobody answered. I think it’s because they don’t have an answer yet they complain for the sake of complaining.

This topic is amusing, people don’t actually even pay attention to the fact that it is not so much that they won’t give us access than it is that they can’t.
I am well aware that giving access for every prepurchaser to this one event is perhaps not the best idea. I am not talking about that. What i am pointing out is that having a prepurchase whose one of bonuses is a beta access, almost immediately followed by a beta that doesn’t honor that privilege is a very bad PR. No matter how they word it.
While I agree with your second point there. This is a stress test of a few hours and definitely not a weekeend, technicalities I know, but so are the reasons why this is not an open test most likely.
The fact that it is only likely three servers entirely separate from the live game alone puts a hard cap on the people involved that they can’t circumvent, so it is not really about whether involving everyone is good idea or not. It is also logistics, the fact that they physically can not accommodate everyone also means each account has to be flagged manually by someone (or entirely created depending on the inner workings of it all).

a slap to the face. regardless of what hand it is still a slap to the face……they new what they did… and they know we want to test this out.. it like waving a steak in front of a dog then slapping it with it. its gonna attack u for what u did.
This stress test was announced to happen before prepurchase was available, and at the time they already made it clear they wanted active wvw players to test it.
Neither is this test even a beta weekend event. Had they said “access to all bèta’s”, you’d have a point. But they were very clear (for once) that this was about beta weekend events. Something that has been clearly defined in the past.
It doesn’t mean you have no chance of getting in, just that it’s not guarenteed. And if anet sticks to what they said (for once), being an active wvw players increases those chances.
Yet the guy they gave the beta keys to is not an “active player”. He’s some kitten that happens to stream and has people who watches his channel. He has barely played this game, and doesnt really know WvW that well. It would have made more sense if they got true commanders that had been in this game since launch, are pretty exclusive WvW, and know what to be looking for.
Instead they went with people to help them PR push. Yep… GG Anet, yet again.

How do you know his streaming account isn’t a secondary account so that when he wants to play his main account and be left alone, he can?
And how do you ANet gave all spots to streamers and not just a handful?

Thank you for your opinion of a streamer. If anything, I’m glad ArenaNet doesn’t endorse this elitism. You can fanboy over your server’s “true commanders” but it shouldn’t be about a select few who garnered questionable legitimate reputations.

In a way it’s disappointing for me because each and everyday all I really do is WvW and EOTM (have rank 3675 at the moment), and by the sounds of it I won’t be allowed to play it, but at the same time, this was announced before the pre-purchase, and it quite clearly says ‘stress test’, not ‘beta’, and as other players have mentioned, it’s to test a SMALL amount of players, not everyone and their dog.
I think people need to put things into perspective and look at everything before pointing their finger and screaming blue murder. Also, if it’s only going to be possible for, what, 200 players? I’d much rather have streamers and popular GW2 YouTubers give me a sneak peak at the new borderlands, than a bunch of randoms who may not be inclined to make videos on their experiences, or provide a decent review of it all.
Look at the bigger picture guys, and don’t worry, we will get our turn eventually. We’ve been waiting a long time for the expansion, I’m sure you can wait some more!

Because that’s not the crux of the problem. Yes, i understand why Anet wants to limit access to this beta stress test. On its own it’s completely reasonable. The problem lies not in the fact they did so, but in its interaction with prepurchase bonuses.
Anet should either have done this test before prepurchase reveal, made prepurchase info way more clear, or, at the very least, not made it the first beta after prepurchase.
At this moment it almost looks like Anet not only tried to mislead at least a part of the prepurchasers (ironically, the more trusting and less suspicious ones), but also decided to rub their noses in it.
