You guys need to chill out
You know what made this whole thing worse? They gave a poor excuse for the core game inclusion (in regards to those who recently purchased the discounted version) and they have kept completely silent on the pricing and purchasing tier system.
Regardless of what people are angry about, a company should NEVER be seen to ignore people, it only makes them more angry, and since Anet has not said anything regarding the elephant in the room beyond that ’it’s for the new players’ answer on the day, they have let the reddit and forums explode as people seethe and seethe and seethe.
I does not matter how you think it should be, people feel cheated and angered by Anet, Anet ignores them while putting up stuff about guild halls, people feel ignored, angry and cheated, Anet still keeps silent on the whole thing which angers the player base even more.
If this was a country, there would be legitimate riots right now regardless of the reason. This is not how you do PR.

And again the outrage in the forums only is like they announced they will shut down the game and we all have to pay 100 $/€ for nothing. The real life and even in game feeling is this: “Okay, the price is a bit steep and/or they could have added at least one character slot to the cheapest expansion option but nonetheless I will buy it.”
For kitten’s sake: just calm down, and chill. It’s not the end of the world and it’s especially not needed to open a kittenload of threads and complaining and whining. Especially from people who played this game and never ever bought anything with real money.
‘would of been’ —> wrong
You know, the outrage IS pretty similar to them announcing they are shutting down the game yeah.
It’s part of the emotional attachment we put into our GW2 accounts, their perceived value. Now, the HoT expansion is here and many players feel like, you either buy it, or you kind of stop playing the game (no new updates, no more LS content, lack of access to potentially maybe OP classes for PvP etc…). So Anet is asking us to choose between what we feel is a price gouging or them closing the servers for us :p
It’s not really rational but customers aren’t rational in the first place and that’s something marketing should know and predict.

Right? While I can understand the viewpoint of both arguments, it feels like the GW2 playerbase has been spoiled rotted with free content, and now can’t accept something valuable they actually have to pay for.
Albet we still don’t know many of the features coming with the product, so that is something that should be fixed.
Again, it does not matter how you think it should be, people feel cheated and angered by Anet, Anet ignores them while putting up stuff about guild halls, people feel ignored, angry and cheated, Anet still keeps silent on the whole thing which angers the player base even more.
Lil hint, “just calm down, and chill” will also annoy people as it can be seen as patronising when someone is angry.
What Anet should do is at least make a proper statement on the issue and either justify the $50 price tag or throw in a character slot to the basic package.
Also don’t underestimate what goes on the forums and reddit, social media is a force to be reckoned with nowadays as any major company will tell you

To this day we still have to deal with people who think the game is dead due to that “game is dead” trend that happened a few months after launch :P
Plenty of other, cheaper fish in the sea. My husband is checking out Archage, and I’m having a look at The Secret World again, which had 11 comparable size expansions (priced between $5 and $10 per) since 2012. Maybe we’ll buy HoT when it reaches a similar price level… AND adds another character slot.
Value for money, or no deal.

Just a bit of advice, tried archeage, it is ok but a bit slow and not as well polished, also it is VERY farm heavy, but PvP farm heavy also. GW2 is better.

We’ve been in GW2 since beta… nothing here we’ve not seen or done yet. We’d love new content, we’re just not prepared to pay $60 per person for the content that HoT offers. Especially if that same money buys us 10x the content elsewhere.

I get that, I’m just saying Archeage isn’t actually that good a game. It’s a hype based thing, the combat is meh. Just saying it isn’t much of a replacement for GW2 and you would be better not spending your money on Archeage.

Think it’s a free game… at least, hubby didn’t mention paying anything. He’s sorta looking around right now. Thx for the advice though, I’ll pass it on. =)
Realize that rather than being happy to get a big expansion that could breath a new breath into a (possibly) stagnating game that has the potential to revitalize the game altogether, you are mad because they said something (a while ago) and they did something else.
Did you see this amount of complaints before the E3? Anet originally promised that all content will be free and they weren’t planning to make an expansion.
Yet, 3 year later, they do just that. And even though they broke their promise, nobody really complains and are hyped for the new expansion. There were some grey spots here and there, but generally, the playerbase was happy.
It’s what followed that caused this uproar.
“You are mad because they said something (a while ago) and they did something else”
Are you saying it’s unreasonable to complain about a company showing how untrustworthy they can be? And then ask me to happily support them?
This is no charity. I’m a paying customer.
Did you miss the number of people on the forums demanding a paid expansion? Because I didn’t.
Businesses have intentions. Intentions can change based on circumstance. That’s life. You adapt or you get left behind.
Anet didn’t pull an expansion out of their kitten just to annoy you. They made an expansion because the fan base demanded one, loudly and for a long time.

You can’t really play Archeage as a free game. Not if you want to be competitive, and it is a PvP game. So if you want to compete, you’ll pay. Or you’ll be canon fodder for those that do pay.

That’s not really the point. The point is getting value out of what you DO decide to pay. If Archeage sucks, well, too bad, it won’t get a penny and there’s plenty of other games out there.
I think it’s messed up for people that bought the game recently for $10 or (hopefully not) for full price – especially if arenanet knew they were going to make the game free. beyond that i’m ok with the prepurchase but really thought there should be an extra character slot for all (or for just existing accounts), and maybe a small, nice gesture toward existing accounts.
I’m probably going to prepurchase the ultimate edition, but I’m hesitant. I don’t like that the community is so angry over the prepurchase and now that i think about it, i don’t actually need 4000 gems.
well.. i was gona buy a copy now im not touching this till someone explanes and gernly works this out.
Why do i need a new GW2 copy? with my HoT…. cant they do the sane thing and convert the GW2 copy in to some small Extra would of saved them all a hell.
Like if you own GW2 you get X and HoT and if not you get a Copy of GW2 and HoT to start your world… would save them all this pain.
ehh im not buying anything now till it get’s sorted.

I’ll chill out when fanboys stop defending the price. It’s not normal for a 4-6 hour expansion (+ character mechanics) to cost 50$. For all of those people saying the price for an expansion is normal please name 1 expansion with such limited content and 50$+ price. (50$+ because a lot of people will have to spend another 10$ to play the highlight char of the expansion)

You completely missed the point.
I specifically said the majority were ok with this expansion and full on hype. So, it’s not the expansion itself that has everyone up in arms.
Also, the fact that people were asking for a paid expansion was only because Anet wasn’t really making any meaningful new content, but that’s a discussion for another time.
(edited by RabbitUp.8294)
Anet wasn’t really making any meaningful new content,
HoT still doesn’t sound meaningful. From what I hear.

You’re 100% right. I’ve gotten more value out of Guild Wars 2 than any other game I’ve ever played….and I’ve played a bunch of them for a long long time. That’s why I’m happy to preorder. $50 or even $100 for the amount of hours I’ve played this game is nothing.
Just keep in mind, the grass is always greener on the other side. Many people on these forums went to Archeage, claiming it would kill Guild Wars 2. I’m not sure how many stayed, but both my sons had the same reaction, and both of them requested refunds for all the money they spent. Only one of them got that refund.

Lol. I have 3 active EVE online subs, have lifetime subs for two other games, have fully leveled/equipped accounts in a bunch of FTP games that I don’t hate but am just not currently playing. That’s a LOT of grass, and at that not even scratching the surface of what’s available out there. And while some of it may be in bad need of a sprinkler, some of it is quite definitely greener.
As to Archeage: meh, I’ll leave that to the husband to check out. He agrees the combat is clunky, and doesn’t think he’ll keep playing, so in that much you’re definitely right.
Alright… Don’t chill, get HoT! Could be a nice game after all, or?? ;-)
So let’s assume that A-Net actually said anything about the current state.
What would you like to hear?
If they give you a free character slot people say “omg 50$ is still too much for such little content. You just want to give us some free gifts so we buy your kitten”
Or what if they removed the core game and made it 5-10$ cheaper? Do you really think that all the people who got this emotional will be impressed wether it’s 50$ or 40$. They won’t.
There is simply no possibility for A-Net to satisfy people now, unless they make like a 50% price off for the addon. Which we all know isn’t going to happen.
They will take their time, release their blog posts and legitimize the price tag with the features that are about to come.
That’s how it’s going to be. Everyone will buy the game, see that it’s awesome, stop crying and we will have a wonderful time playing together.
Or they will take any tiny littly bug they can find to “justify” their cries, because they can’t accept that the story will have a good ending for the game.
All we wanted was a GvG.
So let’s assume that A-Net actually said anything about the current state.

TBH Anet has given people too much time to think and then post, arguing their opinions, dwelling on what has been in front of them for 3 days, Anet could have made this 2 hours instead.
Lest We Forget
Now now, you are exagerating. Most of the complaints center around three axes :
- we don’t know what is in that expansion to justify the cost. Most of those are solved simply by waiting for more info.
- the base pack will require me to buy a new char slot to use one of the most important feature
- making the core game completely free with no compensation for players that already own it is unfair since it greatly devalues something I own
You’ll notice that ANet doesn’t really need to do much to calm down people since those complaints actually have quite a nice synergy between them.
I’m pretty sure they did.
But now there is no chance for them to satisfy the masses.
So why bother trying?
All we wanted was a GvG.

There are 3 main issues and each requires its own solution
1. A veteran has to pay $50 for a bundle they don’t need and $10 for a character slot. That’s $60 total, equal to the price GW2 launched at. Meanwhile, newcomers get the bundle for $50 and are good to go.
The solution here would be to either offer a non-bundled option at a lower price, or include a character slot in the standard edition instead of GW2 core, which brings the total price down to $50, equal to what newcomers are asked to pay.
2. Players that trusted the FAQ and bought the base game
Anet would have to properly compensate them, as it’s 100% Anet’s fault for releasing false information. Their current refund plan is an absolute joke. Alternatively, they can be treated as regular vets and be offered the above solution.
3. There’s a great lack of info, to the point that pre-purchasing the game is a gamble. The fact that we don’t have an official release date means that Anet themselves are not sure when the game will be ready, which implies the content is still not set in stone and therefore some of what was promised or hinted at will not even make the final cut.
I trust the solution here is obvious.
There will still be some unhappy with what is offered, but that’s always the case.

Some affected by the FAQ deception have owned the game for too long (including me) and are unable to get a refund or any compensation. Just adds to the outrage that something of Anets fault (false advertising) becomes our problem.
Lest We Forget
They’ve been advertising it as you need to buy the core game for 6 months. Refunds should go back as far as 6 months. It is super shady the way they handled this.

Their compensation is laughable. To qualify, your account needs to be younger than 30 days, and you must have purchased the game from Anet directly.
And even then, they just delete your account, with your characters, items, gold, HoM rewards. But, more importantly, they delete your gem balance and gem store purchases, and refuse to refund you.
Is epic how people are still posting on again and again and again… for something that they haven’t buy yet…
