If farming/grinding/playing (call it however you want) towards the mastery is not your thing then you absolutely don’t have to do it.
But to answer your question from something that I’ve discovered so far, probably not the best way to do it, people will always find something better. Doing fresh Auric Basin is a good way. Going from Pylon to Pylon. But not as good as a fresh organized Dragon’s Stand. Those events and mobs give there a decent amount of experience point. By the time you get to the collector at least. Then it drops cause most people don’t know how to do it just yet, still new.
Also there is one escort event in Tangled Depths where you leave the NPC to die so you can farm endless amounts of chak. But the event is timed so you can’t do it for long.
