The veteran character slot was only for people who prepurchased HoT.
The character slot from the deluxe/ultimate HoT edition should appear after adding the code to your account.

It was more expensive when you prepurchased (versus now) but it also came with perks like that.

Unless it specifically states it contains something, you can assume that it doesn’t. In the case of an extra character slot, only the deluxe and ultimate editions had an additional character slot listed.
The character slot for veterans was on the page, I believe, prior to the release of HoT.

Through ArenaNet, it’s still the same price. From official 3rd parties, it was on sale for ~$34 nearly every other week as soon as pre-purchasing went live, compared to the ~$38 it is now (dlgamer.us). However, it’s possible to find HoT for $20-$25 at stores clearing out the product, or mistakenly selling it under the price tag of GW2 (core), but that’s entirely up to where you live.
Where i live, it still cost $49 just for HoT.

There is no ‘just HOT’, the base game is now ‘free’ and included with HOT .. well, that’s Anet’s spin on it.

The “free character slot” was only available on the Basic package when you had already purchased the original game and had prepurchased HoT. Nowadays there’s no such thing as purchasing the “core game” since HoT is effectively the new core game that’s available for purchase. Unless you’re buying the deluxe package or above you’re not going to get any perks outside of the content of the game even if you bought the “core game” when it first released; the vet freebies have long been closed.

Yeah, it was a bit of a missed opportunity imho. A char slot should be included in all of the HoT variants to sweeten the deal, especially as there is a new class to try out.
I was a bit miffed that I misunderstand the free slot offer. I thought it was for everyone who pre-purchased, not just “vets”. It was my own fault for not reading the offer properly but that did not stop me feeling miffed!

They meant the base HoT package, as in, without any of the perk items. They weren’t making a comment about HoT vs. base game, but rather about the standard vs deluxe vs ultimate and how much it costs just for the standard edition.

It was utterly ridiculous for Anet to sell HOT with a new profession and a total of four maps for $50 and not throw in a character slot. It was a complete effort to get folks to spend more money for the additional spot.
It really appeared to me that Anet demonstrated their desire to milk all the money out of their product rather than create a quality product and let the money roll in. To them it’s all about the bottom line, not the customer satisfaction. They’ve got their work cut out for them if they want to pry any more money out of me.
