Is the drop rate for this item meant to be this bad? I just spent an hour trying to get this thing to drop, with no luck. I find smokescales jerks to begin with, with their overspam of invisible smoke circle (which starts working before they even cast it and it seems to have a cooldown of 1 second) and the veterans have too much health for me to even clear confidently, so farming the place before the golem HP also isnt viable for me.

It’s so odd, because when I tried to farm the Oakheart drop for the druid’s staff I got it on the first try. It’s super frustrating

Smokescales in general are horridly overpowered. They dodge while hitting you like 20 times, then they did their circle, in which they dodge ALL attacks, and then you lure them out only to have them start attacking you 20 times again and repeat. I’m thinking of that one area in Dragon’s Stand crawling with veterans and it makes me seethe with rage every time I gather pods there. I needed to kill only a few tigers to get my tiger claw, for Wild Abandon, though.

I got this drop after a relatively short time farming smokescales in Dragon’s Stand, using a GS reaper (which is the absolute best for clearing out annoying HoT mobs).

Its just RNG. Me and a friend were killing Smokescales for two days like mad, without any success. Then a few days later I was going to Tarir and killed a Smoke just to pass through and got the Pristine Claw.

That one took me ages as well. Every other drop i got fairly quickly, Smoke Scale was the last one i needed out of all the collections and it took significantly longer as well.

I farmed smokescales near the Golem Hero Challenge. There are always a few Vets and regular ones spawning there constantly. On my reaper, they are easy. Not so much on a couple of other classes. Regardless, I must have killed somewhere between 100-200 of them before the freaking thing dropped. I hate RNG and I hate that some collections rely on it.

I think most everyone gets RNG socked by one of the elite weapon things. Well, at least I’ve seen a number of forum complaints about the one thing that won’t drop (and posted my own woes on the Tengu feather). Smoke Scale was one of the things I got without trying, before I even knew what it was for, as I’d swiftly unlocked all the elites except for Herald so I was getting collection items just from playing the maps for mastery xp. But that Tengu feather, the tiger claw, the dust mite drop … gah so much farming of things I wouldn’t regularly bother to go kill.

It feels like you either get it on the first drop or you are looking at days of pain.

When you called smokescale jerks I said “But I love my little jerk”, the smokescale is the main pet I use. Now I can’t stop giggling at myself. I don’t intend to make light of your plight, I’ve been having the same issue you are having but with the oakheart instead. I’ve resorted to calling them names much worse than jerks. I hope your luck changes on getting it.
