What will happen two weeks after the release of the expansion? There is no way to survive the map alone.
Even now, the beta week, there were hours, I was completely alone , and had nothing to do solo.

And if there is another 3-4 people, if you die, you have to run solo all the way back to to the event, then you’re dead again ..

I tried to make small event alone, and I died instantly. THE EVENT DONT SCALE DOWN Enough. In short, this will be a problem when the map will discharge more …

the beta is likely to be quieter than the actual release will be due to many people likely only ploaying beta characters for a short while, then returning to their regular characters as they cant keep any rewards from the beta

Looking at the other areas of this game, I seriously doubt it’ll be a problem. I’ve been all over the world lately, and there were always people around, even in the most out-of-the-way places. Megaserver does a good job of putting people on maps, and I doubt you’ll ever truly find yourself alone on a map.

I think OP has a valid concern. Core maps have a lot of stuff you can do if you’re alone or there are few people about. The new map really needs a group to have something to do. I managed to do some events solo, but it was a slog and I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t want to test the new specialization. I worry that this, combined with the density of new, harder mobs will leave the maps deserted after they stop being new and fresh. Masteries may help populate them though.

I heard that the events dont scale at all. I believe this will be fixed when HoT comes out.

I am a solo player (most of the time while in the open world) and I ran into the problem where events failed because I was the only one there. This only happened during the night phase (if I wasn’t in one of the populated areas) or after the main run of the two event chains during the day. Most people didn’t realize the chain with Sashoo could end up repeating a little though and it failed because I couldn’t keep the enemy off the towers. If I tagged up, a few more people would come. It takes about two players to get that event down (and by this I mean to keep the enemy far from the towers as possible. We didn’t down them fast and if the other person or I retreated too far back the tower was destroyed and event failed).

This was really the only issue I saw when playing, but I played at good hours of the day and didn’t play the last day at all, focusing on getting the last of the items for my last weapon for my rev instead (still far from it sadly).

The one that really needs to scale is the second to last event in Sashoo’s event chain. I think at one point I was the only one running the material and it hurt a lot because the mobs one shot you and you have to kill them to get the parts needed. And if you’re only one there, the day event chain is more likely to time out than anything else. But the run wasn’t too bad if you died during this one because the wp was right there. Granted I had the mushroom jumping unlocked as well as gliding by this point so it really changed the experience. I did run a few times and it takes forever to do so.

2) It’s a MMO. The whole point of that type of game is to play with other people. There is a WHOLE other type of game if you like GW2 but only want to play solo. It’s a single player RPG and most of those have better story and gameplay than GW2.

That’s true. I forgot about adventures. We’ll have to wait and see how the population ends up on the new maps, but I’m pretty sure the devs thought about this potential problem way before we did

That is tiresome nonsense. MMO is playing with others around, it doesn’t mean grouping with them. Just because you like doing it doesn’t mean everybody does.

If I can’t play in HoT solo, I will be quitting this game. I refuse to be forced to group with others, having to hang around waiting for a group to form, etc.

As a matter of fact, this thread has convinced me to hold off, entirely, on buying HoT until I find out how soloable it is.

I agree. Look at Southsun Cove. It has the same problem. It’s why I almost never go there. I don’t mind mobs being harder, but combine added difficulty with added density, and it’s just too much, unless you have something else to break up the constant threat.
I think Silverwastes and Drytop are good examples of balanced mob populations. At least if you die during an event, you can dodge and weave your way back from the base camp, and get back to business without too much trouble.

IMO, making the mobs more difficult should just make you play smarter, it shouldn’t make it nearly impossible to get from point A to point B on your own, which you need to do, if you die during an event or activity and have to WP. (in case anyone was thinking of interjecting with “well go with a group..join a guild….”.)

Never had to wait more than a couple of second to form a group. And you have no need to form a group while doing the new maps.

Considering Dry Top and Silverwastes are still well populated with Tier 5 happening frequently I’m not too concerned with the HoT maps. I’m sure you’ll find enough people to do events. At least at peak hours.

I think this reaction is based on seeing a tiny part of the HoT maps. There’s a decent chance that other parts of the HoT maps will be soloable.

Also remember that these maps are designed with the new travel masteries (gliding, bouncing, wallows) in mind. Getting around gets about twice as easy with the first tier of gliding and mushrooms, and even easier as you rank up.

Another factor from the weekend: many folks were playing classes they weren’t really familiar with, against mobs they weren’t familiar with. With some experience on both accounts the fights become a lot easier.

Kinda gotta agree with OP. I don’t think events are scaling. And to everyone talking about release, yes the map will have people, but after a few weeks/months when everyone moves on, this map will not be soloable (except adventures, but some of those require other events to be completed).
Wound up being on a closing map one day, with only 2 (I think) other people around me trying to do the ordinance event chain (post escort to airship). We did finally manage to kill the legendary (I think there was 3, maybe 4 of us), but then the gather airship salvage event started. Between the two of us, we barely moved the bar to ~10% after at least 10-15 minutes. Then the map changed to night T.T (but thats a different problem). Pretty sure it didn’t scale to just us two, because when I was able to finish it with a bigger group it still only moved the bar the same amount for each returned.

I disagree. On Reaper and Rev, I could move through most of the map without too much trouble. On Chrono and DD, stealth goes a looooong way toward getting past difficult mobs. It’s also easy to jump off a cliff if you’re in a tough situation; so far, no mobs follow you in flight. I didn’t do much testing of Tempest this weekend and I didn’t try Berserker at all, so I can’t speak for them. However, it is totally possible to survive the map alone if you play smart, especially if you’re just exploring for PoIs or gliding for mastery points.

True, the events weren’t scaling much at all. Still, I was part of some great random 3-4 person not-groups to accomplish events.

Play solo… as someone said earlier it is kinda weird in a MMO.
But lets pretend I agree with this idea:

Defense events can be done alone, I did it several times on my reaper and my rev (didn’t play a lot other spec tbh). So this is not a problem.
Events chain like the noble one can be done with only 3 players, did it also several times. Diarmid in the mordrem forest (north of the map) is doable at 5 players. Also some event didn’t scale up or down at all during the beta.
Roam in the map is easely done alone with glider and shroom.

So you can definitely “play” alone in VB. Sure it require to be more focus than in Vanilla but nothing that can be handle.

The title should be YOU cannot roam alone. And that’s not the same thing. No need to party you’ll find someone that goes the same way and just “follow him” and problem solved. At 2 to 3 VB is ridiculously easy (at least during the beta). As it has been said by others, the difficulty is like DT or SW and you have no trouble at all finding an active map. As for VB itself you can find on this forum that 50% of players complain about how hard it is and 50% about how easy it is. Therefore it is “safe” to say it is just right as it is.
