I wonder how the long term fun factor of the Rev class is being built. They dont seem to have many options for customization. In other words, they dont seem to have many ways to change the gameplay of the class to feel refreshing for a year+ long expansion, if we are to compare how Vanilla GW2 was handled.

Once the game gets multiple elite specs per class, this will greatly diminish as an issue, IMO.
And really, what the Revenant lacks in bar customization, it makes up for with great skill synergy and a refreshing energy management mechanic.

Even so – the way the profession has been presented in the demo leaves very few decision points for your skills. Three decision points (one weapon set, two legends) is extremely inflexible.
My hope is that this inflexibility is just for demo purposes and they fully intend to have a variety of 6-0 skill choices for each Legend. Not as many as normal – of course – but 4-5 utilities per Legend and perhaps a set of skills that are available to every Legend would go a long way towards addressing my issues with the profession.

Character customization was too confusing for players.

They have 4 utilities, but they showed us olny 3 so far. I personally like this system as every legendary stance will have their pros and cons, also the skills itself will fit the legend theme to reflect what you channeling. It would looks lame to channel jalis and use mallyx abilities.. And lets be honest, everyone would pick up the strongest abilities to cover every possible weakness in their builds.
Also because we dont have choice in picking utilities they have to make sure that all of them are viable otherwise x legend will become unviable and not used like it happens with a lot of current skills we have on old professions.
As it stands now i found 3 legend abilities to be underpowered – 2 of them on jalis as they have been overnerfed since last beta; forced and rite on Jalis, embrance the darkness as theres no reason to stay in this transformation.

Source? I’ve been following the Revenant closely since they announced the profession and never came across this. I’ve seen devs say they haven’t ruled out the possibility (as they say about a lot of things), but never anything even suggesting they are actually planning to do it. Perhaps you found something I missed?

Cronacher describes one of Jalis’ utility skills. Revenants using this legend will be able to call down a rune from the sky that damages and weakens enemies as it descends. Once it actually hits the ground, it will push enemies away in order to form a safe space for allies.
Its something we havent seen yet.

That sounds very similar to their inspiring reinforcement skill (though not exactly the same). I suspect that was an old skill that may or may not be included in the HoT launch, as that article was from mid Feburary. Though I certainly hope for more than 3 utilities per legend…it would be very, very difficult to make all three utilities relevant in all game modes.

I knew it will be brought up. Between that lets call it “rune skill” and inspiring reinforcement the olny thing they share is aoe field with support. I think we could compare it with sanctuary and hallowed ground. They both create a field but in different mannier.
And lets be honest;
Jalis = consercration guardian skills
Mallyx = corruption necromancer skills
The article on it own happened before POI and it wasnt wrong about these skills we have seen later on. Also going by logic other classes have 5 type of utility, 4 per each category. We know revenant will be getting 5 legends in base so that actually makes sense.

I too read that article quite some time ago. This is far from a confirmation of 4 utility skills. It was a description of a skill interpreted by the third party and the skill is suspiciously similar to Unyielding Anguish. It is at least just as likely that the skill was reworked and moved to Mallyx.
Simply read the description of that skill, change the word “rune” to “leap” and the condition from “weakness” to “torment” and it is Unyielding Anguish.
I’m not saying there won’t be more skills, in fact I hope so and commented on it in forum posts after the reveal blog post. I’m just saying you can’t read too much into that article’s description of a skill’s concept and assume it means there are unrevealed Jalis skills.

Worst case:
- 1 weapon set
- 2 legends to switch back and forth with fixed healing, utility and elite
- elite specialisation that will give 1 extra weapon
Better case:
- 1 weapon set (don’t see this changing)
- 2 legends to switch between. seletable heal, utility and elite per legend (likely only heal and utilities)
- new weapon and/or legends with elite spec
One thing to remember, the revenant has unlike any other class no direct cooldown on his utility and elite skill. Giving this class to much room an flexibility would make it near impossible to balance. Expect more rigid builds but more flexible combat. When 9/10 of your skills have almost no cooldowns, you rarely have nothing to press.

Right. The very fact that Revs get access to TWO Heal skills is pretty powerful. I think this makes up for them not getting the normal extra F# skills other professions get. However, I’m seriously hoping for the second scenario otherwise this profession will be terribly predictable. Sometimes switching out that one utility skill is very key to adjusting a build or making it your own.
However – one positive note is that unless they intend to completely remove/redesign how the racial skills, never mind the neutral skills (Spirit Wolf and the Heal) work then they basically have to allow Revenants the ability to swap out some of their skills for those – so having more options than just the set 5 per legend seems likely.

Um..thats right but anguish is already there in the article
“Peters also mentions a Mallyx skill called Unyielding Anguish. When used, players will be able to target an area on the ground. Then they’ll leap at that area, displacing all enemies from it. "
Like i said all classes except enginner has 4 utility skills, so are specializations. Why revenant would be different here? I could understand 3 utlity skills if there was 6th legend coming but it doesnt.

I don’t know since i don’t really keep up with the news but i would speculate that all the rev stuff we have had access to via beta or demo is only part of the total so as to not burn us out completely on the class. if this isn’t the case then i totally agree with you.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but would say that stating it in a factual way is reading too much into it. In the end, we’ll see, but I personally don’t think we’ll see that skill in game.
Just remember. Fair does not necessarily mean equal. And equal does not always mean fair. Anet has said as much themselves on a variety of topics. Our facts are simply what they’ve officially released via blogs and/or red posts. Anything more than that is pure speculation.
I’m not worried about losing a little customization. So long as I can find a good synergy between my chosen weapon, legends, gear and traits, I will be happy. And providing they can add useful skills to every legend there shouldn’t be a problem.
A lot of core builds tend to use 2 or more of the same type of utility skill as it is, so I do not think the revenant will be a lot different in that respect. They may lose a little customization, but so long as they offer a variety of viable builds, I don’t think it will be a problem.
Utility skills are only one part of your build. Weapons, armour, runes, sigils and traits are also important factors. So really in the grand scheme of things, utility skill choice is only a small part of the big picture. Some builds may be defined by them but those builds tend to have most or all slots filled by the same skill type, and often many traits are focused on that skill type too (mediguard for example). How is that any different to choosing a legend and traiting around it?
Another thing to consider, is because the skills are balanced around being fixed to a specific legend, they can potentially make them a little more powerful than some core utilty skills, because they do not need to worry about players combining skills from 3 different legends.

Yeah but would you be okay with playing the same build for 1-3 years with nothing new to change things up?

As long as it actually starts doing some damage and gets a power legend I’ll be happy enough to try it out. Safe to say that it’ll never be my main though. The lack of being able to choose utility skills rly puts me off.

Who says you can’t change a legend from time to time? Also: New elite specs.

5 legends all with preset skills,,,,
Can only use 2 at a time. So 10 combos. No telling if some of the skills on each legend aren’t desirable.
So can you deal with that exclusively for 1-3 years before the next expansion with a new elite spec comes out?

Assuming at least 3-4 of the legend combos were viable, yes. Because, again, your build doesn’t only come from your legends. Your weapon choice and traits will be a big part of your build too.
You seem more worried about utility skill variety than viable build variety. Utility skills are only part of the whole picture.

Keep in mind that elite spec will bring a new mechanic to them, something else than yet another legend to channel which may allow them to change new utilities in case if they get more than 4.
Personally i like how revenant is designed atm and so a lot of people in game i asked in beta.
I hate the fact revenants can’t change (or don’t have a large variety of) utility skills, along with the fact they don’t have weapon swap, AND the fact that the hammer is quite slow and ‘clunky’ feeling.
I hope all three of these points are addressed now or in the near future.
Can only use 2 at a time. So 10 combos. No telling if some of the skills on each legend aren’t desirable.
But you got more healing and elite skills as a revenant that already fit with each other and the utility skills.
And I have rather something like that than 3 elites where only one is viable and the others are total “kitten”.

Healing inst really all that much better than from other classes atm. And both jalis and mallyx elites sux in current state. Embrance is something you olny enter once and leave it right away as it takes load of energy and doesnt give any real benefits (pulsing resistance) and rite of the dwarf takes 3 seconds to cast for 50% dmg reduction for 5 seconds along with 50 energy cost.. before ill ever finish this cast im gonna be dead in pvp.
Honestly rite should be changed to a upkeep skill with 1 sec casttime with ability to insta break stun for 50 energy. Why i would use it as stun break atm to enter 3sec casttime animation where i cant do anything?
