Basic story missions and activities. No Hearts.

There are outposts and adventures which kinda sorta take the place of hearts.

Heart of Thorns will be, ironically, heartless.

there are no hearts in lvl 80 areas.
There are in Frostgorge Sound. It’s just Orr and the added areas that don’t.
Also, OP, we know you’re referring to Guild Wars 2, you don’t need to spell it out.

I’m sort of surprised they haven’t added more things like hearts, etc to new maps, and added new map completions. They wouldn’t need to be necessary for the gifts, but would give new achievements for people to get. You could even have separate tracks for them, with some items as a reward. Given exploration is a big deal with gw2 and all.

Now they can have events unlock merchants that sell special items, or have the events just drop special items (if the RNG gods love you), and have those part of a collection to give the same results.

First of all, hearts were never supposed to be in the game in the first place. They were added, not as content, but as ways of keeping people hanging around in areas where dynamic events occur. This is because people were running around, missing events and saying there was nothing to do in early betas.
Hearts were never meant to be main content, they are filler. That’s why no new zone has them.
End game zones like the three Orr zones, Southsun, Dry Top and the Silverwastes don’t have them because they’re unnecessary on those zones. What would hearts really add to Dry Top or the Silverwastes?
Don’t expect new hearts, because there won’t be new hearts.

While I’m ok with the absence of new hearts (mainly because they have no replay value), I find one part of them vary appealing : the multiple ways we were able to complete them.
Most events leave no choice on how we can participate. They tend to be too… atomic in their approach. Moreover, I believe than some events could be wrapped-up in a single event, especially when they are in the same narrow location, or given by the same NPC.
For example, in Malchor’s leap, Byanca is a NPC that need to help reinforce the main camp by forging weapon from spectral hammers, and sometimes just leave the camp in order to search for Omnomberries.
Couldn’t we have a single event in this case, were the characters can either/both bash spectral weapons to give her the materials required for her job, and gather the berries she needs for her delicious wine ?
Overall, I wish they were more than one way to interact with the events around the character.

Hearts are the original NPE, designed to mimic quest hubs from other games to let people know this is a location where there will be events to do.
Once you’re playing in level 80 zones you’re not supposed to need that degree of hand-holding, you’re supposed to know from past experience that once you start exploring there will be events and other things to do dotted around the map and how to find them without a permanent market to show you the areas they occur.
