Am I right that we will get those points for content in the areas and they will probably be similar to the achievements list (kill this legendary, do all the teq challenges, etc). Also for both HOT and non-HOT areas would any character’s experience somewhere be applicable (hello level-up tomes).

I did read on one of their posts that they would be retroactive if we had already done whatever but I was just making sure I had the same impressions everyone else has.

We’re not entirely sure what exactly will award mastery points in the core game. Completing the personal story, world completion, Living Story Season 2, Dungeon Master, maxing all crafting professions, and probably the jumping puzzles may be some examples of what could likely award mastery points.

Progress for masteries is gained by earning experience on a level 80 character in the area of the game for the applicable mastery you have set to be trained. HoT masteries such as grinding can only be trained on the new maps. Tyria masteries such as for legebdary crafting can be trained in any parts of the game that exist at this moment which award XP. Tomes, and the other XP consumables, cannot be used once you’ve reached level 80.

To answer the first half of your question, yes. I don’t have the source offhand, but any mastery points that are awarded for activities that you have already completed will be retroactively awarded at least for Tyria (not sure this applies to anything accomplished the beta, I doubt it does).

This won’t really put you at an advantage though since you do still need to earn experience to train the masteries before you can actually spend the mastery points on them.

The retroactive mastery point rewarding for core areas statement was made in the Pact Commander Mastery stream.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I have been trying to track down information about the exclusion of xp consumables but am having trouble locating anything. Will the exclusion only apply to consumables that grant xp directly such as writs of xp or also include xp earning buffs such as killstreak consumable?

There was a Zam article well before the first beta, that stated that xp boosters, xp banners, etc would also not work on xp gain for mastery tracks; however, I do believe that people were able to use these during the betas. So it is unclear if this statement still applies.

We have had a definitive statement that neither tomes or writs will work for mastery tracks. Writs cannot be used on a lvl 80 character, 20 of them can be combined to create 1 tome. A tome used on a lvl 80 character will grant you a spirit shard, but does not apply any xp to a mastery track.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Yeah. We were able to use XP boosters during the beta tests. I think you can easily get well over 400% depending on what all can be stacked.

If xp boosters don’t work on mastery tracks, I guess I will be able to overcome my OCD hoarding and free some bank space. If xp boosters are made less useful, hopefully their drop schedule is changed. With all the xp tomes and writs available, xp boosters will become mostly useless.

That’s what I thought.

So I wonder… was that just for the betas, or have they changed their stance on those things being usable?

I’m guessing since:

  • they could be used during beta
  • anet was looking for feedback on how we felt about length of time to achieve masteries
  • the boosters were recently changed

That we’ll be able to use them and they’re just planning on padding xp numbers as needed from our feedback.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

They worked during the final beta. I guess we’ll know for certain within 15 hours. It sure hasn’t stopped people from buying those lunar fireworks.

Makes me regret selling mine so long ago, haha.

But if they do…I have like a dozen birthday boosters just waiting for use.

It will be interesting to see some of the details. For example, what is involved in getting pact mastery up to things like the mentor tag.

I’m curious about that track’s xp requirements as well. I know several of us are aiming for that loot hoover capability as quickly as possible.

Yes, having to go around to everything during the fight and check their pockets is annoying. The REAL pain in the neck is when, after a boss fight, your client crashes while everyone surges towards the chest. Or a champ is downed and you can not find the chest.

I am really looking forward to that mentor tag though. It is what I bought my commander tag to do but is a bit more obvious.

every time i consider buying a commander tag 1 of 2 things happens:

1) I find a much better use for the funds
2) Some idiot(s) remind me why I hate people
