In addition I say that many friends don’t buy the game just because it’s not localized.

I ask at least to consider this proposal that we Russian players, Italian and Portuguese we ask from two years.

ow gosh please no… Germans, french and spanish ppl are enough… no offense but those people don’t speak english and expect everyone to speak in their language, and LFG language option doesn’t help cause people don’t even read what is listed in the LFG…

Easy to talk when you’re Spanish, French or German (because you can choose the game in yours language). Let the word even to those who have been cut off. And I remind you that GW1 was translated in other languages

We don’t know. There has been no talk of additional localization. Keep in mind there’s text to fill several thick books in GW2 and translating all that would take enormous amounts of both time and money. Italian for example is not very widely spoken worldwide, so it could be that they would never recover the costs. Russian might be viable, but I have no idea how popular GW2 in in Russia and to my knowledge Russians are pretty accustomed of playing their games in English.

Germans, French and Spanish people are accustomed to getting everything translated into their own language. They dub almost all American TV-shows too.

Personally I don’t care either way, although it irritates me somewhat when people start talking in their native language in sPvP matches, for example. I think it’s rude towards the other players.

Hi people!

Before the launch of Guild Wars 2, I had the pleasure of organizing a group of Italian amateur translators. I can assure you that the amount of work is not binding.
If ArenaNet was interested and provide us with the texts in the original, it would be easy to make a translation of the texts. We could create a platform shared with the Russians, Portuguese, Danish, and any other language to enhance the game experience. In these years I got to know many people who have never bought GW2 precisely because of the lack of translation.

Who cares about a possible proliferation of Italian language in the world chat I inform them that this is happening already and not the fault of the translation, but of players (I have read several Slavic languages, French, German and Russian; I ignore them and I continue in the game)

holy words! If A.net don’t want to spend money (which surely would gain with this expansion if they implemented other languages ) must give us permission and we take players to translate .
We would do a job for free.

Anet is a business, they don’t offer services for just feeling better for themselves. The cost of the translation work must be less than the income they get from the new players. If they decide not to translate the game to another languages, it’s not because they’re being mean or inconsiderate. It’s because by their calculations it would not make sense business-wise. If on the other hand they calculate they will earn money by doing the translation, you can be sure they would do it.

Adding volunteer work to the equation does not work. The international IP laws unfortunately do not make it possible for individuals to completely relinquish their rights to their Intellectual Property even with a written contract, and Anet sure as hell is not going to put anything in their game that some player could then years later claim theirs and ask compensation/removal of it.

Keep in mind that even if people do translate it for free, ArenaNet would still need to hire people to make sure the translation is correct.
There is also the issue with the swift release schedule and the fact that it would spoil things quite a bit if the community had access to things before they were added to the game and so on.

I will also refer the OP to his old thread about the same topic, which contains arguments against it:

I am from Sweden. I do not speak Spanish, French or German. I can’t choose Swedish for the game. But clearly I can still play the game without much issues.
In fact, even if I could play it in Swedish I wouldn’t, since stuff is usually lost in translations.

We had an internal control system, each translator controlled translations of others and some non-translators only controlled .

To limit the leak of information about updates would be enough to limit a few people (excluding HoT, updates can be managed even by a single person)

Personally I did not know what was said by Tom Gore regarding international IP laws (and thank him for telling us); I still believe that it is possible to find a solution, if it is sought.

You could sell your translation to Anet, but even then the price would have to be of fair market value, or you could sue Anet later for it.

But even so, someone that know exactly what ArenaNet means with certain names or statements needs to make sure the translation is correct. There are, at least in Swedish at least, English words that can refer to different things, that might not always be clear.
There can also be the fact that certain names actually gives hints, which also needs to be translated correctly, and not only added as the same name and so on.

Having internal control systems works for parts of the issue, but not for all of it. ArenaNet would also want to make sure to have their own translator checking it, even if you have controllers, since it is their product and they must make sure the translations are up to their standard.

Every single person that have access to information is a potential leak, and unless that person is directly employed by ArenaNet said person have no real threat to revealing said information.

I seem to remember FFXI having a language translator back in the day. Even if it was an awkward babble fish translator, having one in game couldn’t hurt.

Arenanet, are you still thinking to cut out from your grace italian community?
Are almost past three years from gw2’s date release and yet it exists people that believes in you.
For us it is enough even only getting the Official Subtitles of Personal story and of Living story. In this way also italian community can realy play to gw2.

I will accept any answer. One answer is a good form of education, either positive or negative.

I am sure, if you translate the game with another language many other players buy the game.

But will there really be enough people to cover the (ongoing) cost of translation?
That seems very unlikely.

Not necessarily, companies localize because they expect there to be a market, they don’t expect localization to create a market.

Your issue is that you don’t adapt to the international english language (I’m saying this as a swedish player fyi). Just look at the majority of the german/french/spanish players who must have their own language in-game in order to play it, it is more of an issue that a majority lack the knowledge of english rather than putting the burden upon Anet.

And on top of that, ANet feeling that there are enough German/French/Spanish players out there that would buy the game to recoup any current and future translation fees.

They may not feel the same way about Italian players. It’s not something they can try and then stop supporting if they don’t have enough Italians using the Italian client. Not to mention each official language they give a localization for, they make a server for. Is EU WvW so overcrowded on most servers to warrant 3 new servers? (they can’t turn an existing server into Italian since people are already on it, and for WvW you have to have a multiple of 3 servers).

I am italian and I don’t think that “we” need an italian version of this game.
Moldur already wrote what I was going to type, I don’t think the game, with an international community as it is, could benefit from another “our language only ‘cos we don’t want to adapt” faction.
english is easy to learn and useful, there’s no reason to ditch such an international language.
