Q:

I was watching a youtube trailer analysis about HoT and some random comment shows “Remember when they said all the ingame story content will be free and there will be no expansion but free content updates with only ingame shop wit real money cursncy with special dyes, keys of boxes etc… 2012 was really long time ago for their memory i suppose~?”

So was this a part of the agreement when buying gw2 or this just a community member talking nonsense?

one would assume without paying for the expansion you will gain access to the story part of it including the map but you wont get masteries to navigate the map or specializations or revenant

I really, really doubt they would get access to the new story or map.

As far as the “no expansion” bit, i’ll leave you with this. Straight from Collin. Skip to about 4:45.

Long story short, he says the community made it clear, including the lapsed players, that living world as it was would not be enough for them. (paraphrasing mine)

They never said that there would never be a paid expansion. They tried the living story as an experiment, and clearly something more was needed. People tend to grab onto one off-hand comment and interpret things as much more than they were.

The original plan was no expansion. People didn’t like their model enough so they adapted and changed their business model like a smart company that wants to survive and keep its patrons.

Considering during interviews prior to beta they talked about the possibilities of an expansion and how they would do it, that’s just another example of someone not understanding what they said. For example, they once said they had no plans for an expansion… at this time. A lot of people only selectively hear the first part. Even during beta, they talked about expansions. For example, fishing was something that we might eventually see in an expansion.

The game and its updates will always be free of course, once purchased. They said something like that when talking about not having a subscription fee. An update is just a simple patch however, not an expansion.

It’s not part of “the agreement.” There’s no obligation on their end to just release living story, and I’m glad they aren’t going that route anymore.

Jip community member talking nonsense. Like always.
Well I guess not exactly. Before release ANet didn’t say anything about about expansions, living story or free story content. So at launch this wasn’t the case. There was no agreement in that regard back then.
The debatable part comes in after launch, although I don’t remember Anet ever explicitly stating they would never ever release an expansion (rather they said they’d try to release expansion type content via Living Story) and I’m pretty sure they never said story content would be free. So pretty sure that there was no agreement in that regards after launch either.
The thing is, until we develop brain augmented communication which allows for thoughts to be directly streamed from brain to brain were’ stuck with language. And words are interpret-able and heavily context dependent. So we all interpret what was and wasn’t said differently.
